Flower Banters. Tsuru-sama said I should run it past here. Too short for a two-part banter? Too long for a flirt?

Flower Banter 1 (Low Level) [Forest Area]:

4.a. (Come see the flowers with me.) (goto 4.b.)

4.b. (Solaufein joins you to peruse freshly opened night blossoms by the wayside. You pick a particularly lovely bloom, so pale it is as bright as a mirror in the moonlight. Its scent reminds you of honey and fresh, running water.)

i. (Give the flower to Solaufein.) (goto 4.c)
ii. (Keep the flower and continue admiring it.) (goto 4.d.)

4.c. I have read of surfacers giving flowers to the ones they love. [Charname], what is the meaning of your gift?

i. I gave you a present. Do you have to ask why? (goto 4.e.)
ii. It made me happy, and it makes me happy to give it to you. (goto 4.f.)
iii. It's just a gift, nothing more. (goto 4.g.)
iv. Take it or leave it. (goto 4.h.)

//Meaning of Gift Responses

4.e. I apologize. I did not mean to seem ungrateful. (goto 4.i.)

4.f. I am happy to hear this, although, I do not know why you would think me worthy of such beauty. (goto 4.i)

4.g. I see. (goto 4.i.)

4.h. [Charname], I understand I might seem ungrateful, but that was truly uncalled for. (Solaufein returns your gift and walks off.)

// End Meaning of Gift Responses

4.d. Tis a beautiful thing true, but there are creatures far lovelier about this night.

4.i. (Solaufein rolls the stem between his thumb and his forefinger. Although apparently deep in thought, he does this carefully, even gently, and breathes deeply of the flower's perfume.) Thank you.

Flower Banter 2 (Low Level) [Forest Area]:

5.a. [Charname], I have a gift for you. It is a small thing, but I would like you to have it all the same.

i. A gift? That's sweet. (goto 5.b.)
ii. What is it? (goto 5.b.)
iii. If it's that small, come back when you have something larger. (goto 5.c.)

5.b. (Solaufein hands you a fragrant white lotus, pure as the virgin moon.)

i. It's lovely. Thank you. (goto 5.d.)
ii. A flower? That's it? (goto 5.e.)
iii. I can't accept this. (goto 5.f.)
iv. I have read of surfacers giving flowers to the ones they love. Solaufein, what is the meaning of your gift? (5.l.)

// Flower's Worth Replies

5.d. I am glad you like it, simple though it is. You cannot know how much it pleases me to know you have liked it. This fair bloom is charmed. Its beauty, like our friendship, will not fade with the years. (goto 5.g.)

5.e. You misunderstand me, [Charname]. The lotus is beautiful, but its beauty is but the skin of its virtues. The lotus heals. It is the clearest state of mind, and the greatest balm of the soul. Your acceptance of me lends me strength. This lotus represents what I wish to offer in kind to you.

i. That's...the most beautiful thing anyone's ever said to me. Thank you. (goto 5.h.)

ii. I had no idea I meant so much to you. Thank you for sharing your thoughts. I will cherish this lotus, as I will cherish our friendship. (goto 5.h.)

iii. You would compare me to this cheap bloom? After all I've sacrificed for you, is this the best you can do? (goto 5.i.)

5.f. Why?

i. It's too lovely. Too fragile. (goto 5.e.)
ii. What would I do with it? (goto 5.g.)
iii. It is cheap, and worthless. (goto 5.i.)

5.g. Keep it close and keep it well, as I hope you will me. While the lotus is beautiful, its beauty is but the skin of its virtues.

(goto 5.i.)

//End Flower's Worth Replies

5.c. [Charname], I admit my gift is inadequate, but surely you would do me the favor of hearing me out?

i. I have nothing more to say to you. (goto 5.i.)
ii. Ah, Solaufein. You misunderstand me. I was not referring to your gift at all... (goto 5.j.)
iii. I'm sorry. I didn't mean to say that at all. Can you forgive me? (goto 5.k.)

5.h. No, thank you. Had I but more to share than mere words...But come, let us continue on our way. We have much to do.

5.i. [Charname], why are you so cruel? I thought I escaped these petty concerns when I left the Underdark, but I see now that surfacers are just as capable of such callous behavior, if not better. I will not make that mistake again.

5.j. (Solaufein contemplates you a moment, and you wonder just what sort of trouble you've wandered into this time. The man suddenly makes a face you don't recognize on him, and to your utter surprise, Solaufein begins to laugh, a completely spontaneous, full belly laugh. Seeing him laugh makes you laugh too, and when you both choke so hard you have to stop and catch your breath, Solaufein playfully clips your ear.) Impudent [girl/boy]. What will I ever do without you?

No. That is why I have this. (goto 5.b.)

5.k. (Solaufein smiles.) What have you said? I forget. (goto 5.b.)

5.l. (Solaufein smiles.) I will never forget those lines, my friend, and the answer you gave me. But our conversation is exactly why I have chosen to present you with this. I hope you will keep it close and keep it well, as I hope you will me. While the lotus is beautiful, its beauty is but the skin of its virtues.

(goto 5.i.)

You know... it is a bit middle schoolish but I find it somewhat difficult to actually tell the person I’m flirting with that I’m *going* to flirt with them. It just seems... wrong.  So I have decided to make Imoen even MORE useful than she currently is. :D
LOL! I like it, Sphira. You may need to adjust how Sola speaks (i.e. I don't think he'd say "Is something up"), but I love the general idea. :)

I just did! :D

EEEEe! Dratted msgboard restrictions. There's a bit of that dialogue missing...um.

*notation*

The small and large reference was really under the belt, and when the PC says "If it's that small, come back when you have something larger..." she or he means quite literally, come back when you have something larger. Thanks for pointing this out though. It means I've gone and made the entire point way too subtle.

Ooh, and like your Imoen suggestion. Sola could benefit from more 'darkness' in the conversation, although you did say that was a rough draft, so. :)

If someone isn't in the party, the dialogue won't happen. Dialogues for specific party members are coded so they appear just if that person is in the party.

No, I meant that if Imoen wasn't in the PC's party, the PC would have to tell Solaufein what's a flirt anyway...but then again, Solaufein's a pretty smart chap. Perhaps he might ask what the winking and manhandling's about?

Somewhere we have a dialogue that may initiate the flirting... hold on, let me find it here...

-----------
Sola: Is something caught in your eye, CHARNAME?

PC: No.

Sola: Then why do you grimace so?

PC: It’s called winking.

Sola: I see. And what is the import of this?

PC: Don’t the drow wink? How do they signal a …possible…interest in one another?

Sola: Hah! Females of rank dispatch a squad of armed guards to escort the selected one thither. Commoners usually begin negotiations through their elders.

PC: But that’s for formal liaisons, surely? What about more … casual interest?

Sola: Amongst us, no interest is “casual”. Each whim is pursued as though it were the only goal in the universe – while it lasts.

PC: Nothing conditional? No “what ifs” or maybes”? How do your people … flirt, for example.

Sola: Ah! In my readings I have had encountered references to ‘flirtation’ but I have never clearly understood the term. What does it mean?

PC: With us, it’s a sort of behavior, I’d guess you’d say, designed to explore…possibilities…in relation to another. Gestures, like winking, tones of voice, postures…they’re all as important as the actual words.

Sola: Hmmm. I can see the necessity for such conditional modes here on the surface. In Ust Natha, everything is tightly circumscribed – as much by physical constraint as anything. Strangers are extremely rare – save as slaves or enemies. Here, however, meeting strangers – without hostility – is a daily commonplace. It is so wide…and fluid. Almost unnerving, if one concentrates on it.

--------

There, I thought I'd saved it but I had to go dig it out of the monster thread. Thoughts, comments?

Well, I was thinking Jaheira would pull Sola over and dicuss this with him -BUT- I don't see her actually doing this when the PC is male and she's persuing him as well as Sola.

I'm a bit aganist the PC saying anything because think about it; IRL would anyone go up to their crush and say "I am flirting with you now."? But I will devise a few more dialougs after this one with NPCs giving Sola the low down.

Ideas For the Lecture

Nalia- Tho her wisdom is a bit low for her to really notice.
Haer-Dalis- But the question is would he even care?
Uhm... *thinks* Anyone else?

I have to say I have a problem with the whole implying impotency thing. I know Bioware used it for a good reason, but most drow priestesses, to my knowledge, have a potion to knock that excuse out of the water. Not that's it's a big deal, it just always bothered me.

The in-game reference to impotence is one of a male PC's ad-lib excuses for not having sex with Phaere.  Having Sola refer to it, however, makes it sound as though it's a recognized ploy in drow society; perhaps a device whereby a male of importance in one house may decline the advances of an insignificant female of another without technically violating the basic "female superiority" tenet of the whole society.  Female PCs don't get this dialogue, so either a male PC told Sola what happened in Phaere's bedroom (which would make an interesting banter) or Sola is referring to a drow custom that the PC duplicated by accident.

Either way, seems like Sphira owes another banter here to explain her reference in the first one.  Which will it be?  A little 'guy' talk or a digression down the folkways of the drow?

Through a series of PM's with Hendryk, the following dialogue between the PC and Sola was arrived at. It's basically Sola wanting to know how Phaere reacted when the PC arrived with his cloak.

Forgive the coding, it's rough, but I wanted to show where it will differ with whether the PC is male or female. I'll fix it in the final. Thoughts, comments, suggestions, please? :)

=================

IF ~~ !StateCheck(Player1,STATE_SLEEPING)

  IF ~~ THEN REPLY ~Well, you had challenged her publicly…happy and…relieved, I think.~ GOTO solaph2
IF ~~ THEN REPLY ~She just muttered something about the folly of love and hung it up with her other trophies.~ GOTO solaph3
IF ~~ THEN REPLY ~Not much reaction at all, as I remember. She seemed far more concerned about the future than the past.~ GOTO solaph4

IF ~~ THEN BEGIN solaph1

IF ~~ THEN BEGIN solaph10
SAY ~Hmmm. Extremely disquieting…if you are certain of this. Your voice lacks its normal confident timbre, [CHARNAME].~
IF ~~ THEN REPLY ~Hah! Caught me there! The news turned her red hot in fact. And me too, in due course, I must say.~ GOTO solaph12
IF ~~ THEN REPLY ~Well, actually she seemed…aroused by it all. Embarrassingly so, in fact.~ GOTO solaph13
IF ~~ THEN REPLY ~You weren't there, right? That's my story and I'm sticking to it.~ GOTO solaph14

  IF ~~ THEN EXIT
END

IF ~~ THEN BEGIN solaph12
SAY ~Then you are fortunate…extremely fortunate…to be alive. Your lack of even rudimentary training in the drow arts of love ought to have betrayed you…she must have been utterly distracted by her future plans. That is chill comfort but better than nothing.~
  IF ~~ THEN EXIT
END

IF ~~ THEN BEGIN solaph13
SAY ~And yet, obviously, you survived this perilous emergency.~
IF ~~ THEN REPLY ~I couldn't see where I had any choice, really.~ GOTO solaph15
IF ~~ THEN REPLY ~I managed to lie my way through it ok. The situation wasn't really…inviting, you know?~ GOTO solaph16
END

IF ~~ THEN BEGIN solaph14
SAY ~Famously, it was a female who doth "protest too much". I shall not press you further, [CHARNAME].~
  IF ~~ THEN EXIT
END

IF ~~ THEN BEGIN solaph15
SAY ~Had you realized how little choice you *did* have, fear might have unmanned you entirely. It is gratifying that you emerged…intact.~
  IF ~~ THEN EXIT
END

IF ~~ THEN BEGIN solaph16
SAY ~Ha! Ever resourceful, [CHARNAME]. Still, you were most fortunate. Phaere must have been very distracted by her plans for the immediate future, else she would not have halted at any obstacle that you could have raised.~
  IF ~~ THEN EXIT
END
