Sarevok's new epilogue
« on: November 15, 2002, 12:56:37 PM »
Hi,

when I played TOB for the first time I accepted Sarevok in the party: I liked the idea of having him at my side and I liked the idea that I had the chance to make him turn to goodness.

The first time I played it, I did not get the alignment change (if I understood Wesley's words correctly, it's due to the fact that the alignment change is random in TOB) and, when I finished the game, I got the ending where he's a tortured soul who doesn't really know himself.
He protects Berdusk from an army of invading orcs leaving the city before a reward just to attack another city with his own army.

I liked this ending since it reflected his half-change: started but not completed.

I played TOB again and, this time, I made him change alignment. When I defeated Melissan I got the same ending of before and I was very disappointed: Sarevok DID CHANGE, why the "tortured soul" ending?

I then played Ascension from the beginning and made him change alignment (this time it wasn't random). At the end, the same "tortured soul" ending. :-(

Why if he changed and told me he'd like to travel with me?
So I came up with the idea to write a new ending for Sarevok, one where he has changed to chaotic good and behaves like a chaotic good fighter (oh well... more or less...).
Since I saw Ascension was being updated, I decided to make this ending public and contacted Wesley.

In order to avoid any misunderstanding, here is what I think about each ending.

1) First ending, where Sarevok conquers Baldur's Gate but is not happy about it.
This will not be touched, since it's perfect.

2) Second ending, where he is a "tortured soul".
This is, in my storyline point of view, a perfect ending if the PC did not complete Sarevok's change to CG or if the PC could complete the change to CG but then choose to become a god (thus going against Sarevok's advice at the end of Ascension).
In the first case, Sarevok was in the middle of a change, so can be a tortured soul.
In the second case Sarevok did change but the PC behaved in a incoherent way, thus putting questions in Sarevok's mind and making him a tortured soul again.

3) Third ending, mine, you're gonna read it soon.
This should happen ONLY if the PC made Sarevok change to CG AND choose to be a mortal: Sarevok has completed the change and he has PC as a model, so he can get answers for his doubts ;-) and he doesn't become a tortured soul.

Here's my "Sarevok's Chaotic Good Epilogue".

I spoke with Wesley about this thing and he told me to post this here in order to see your feedback. :-)

Pleasant read...

After the battle at the Throne of Bhaal, Sarevok and [CHARNAME] agreed to keep travelling together; the former was moved by the desire to keep learning from the ways of [PRO_HISHER] [PRO_BROTHERSISTER], while the latter did not want to lose the chance to guide the transformation [PRO_HESHE] started in Sarevok since his resurrection.
They decided to head for the Sword Coast on a journey which would have brought them to the city of Candlekeep, a place [CHARNAME] and Sarevok both knew well... even if for different reasons.
On the road, Sarevok kept questioning his own past and actions, now that he had seen how a Child of Bhaal could use his powers to become a force of good, instead of becoming a Deathbringer as he had.
As they approached the city of Baldur's Gate, Sarevok smiled at [CHARNAME] and asked to stop there, just to see what the citizens would say seeing the hero of Baldur's Gate travelling together with the once most dangerous menace of the city.
His predictions weren't disappointed, as people cowered in fear sighting them and as the city guard gathered at the main gate to prepare for a battle... just to find a laughing [CHARNAME] trying to relax the all of them.
Even if the presence of Sarevok still sent shivers through the spine of almost everybody, the party was greeted and welcomed to stay. Those were days of change, since one of the four ruling dukes had recently decided to retire from the scene and a new election was soon to occur. [CHARNAME], unexpectedly, asked if they would have accepted Sarevok's candidacy in a fair election. The old fears made people look suspiciously at [CHARNAME] and completely reject [PRO_HISHER] idea. Sarevok himself was very surprised by [CHARNAME]'s proposal, who explained it as "You once tried to rule this city by force; wouldn't you rather rule it by law, now?"
There wasn't much time to think about it, as the guards reported an invading army approaching the city. A plan was hastily made: the city guard was set to defend the inner walls while [CHARNAME] and [PRO_HISHER] party were to block the invaders before they could lay siege to or enter Baldur's Gate. [CHARNAME]'s goal was to reach the mind behind this army and dispose of it, while Sarevok was to defend the main gate to the city. [CHARNAME]'s task was neither easy nor immediate, and even though Sarevok unsheathed his sword and stormed in the orc troops with his Deathbringer rage, they managed to keep advancing until they broke into the city.
Sarevok kept fighting like a demon, making people wonder if the orcs were the real thing to fear now that [CHARNAME] was away, but he was eventually heavily wounded protecting a commoner who was caught in the battle among the streets. Sarevok pushed away the commoner and rushed back with his full fury against the orcs, wounding few and killing many before he fell on his knees suffering from a terrible loss of blood. Raging, he tried to rise but he had used all of his strenght to defend the city. Before falling on the ground, his half closed eyes saw a firm hand coming towards him and helping him stay on his feet: [CHARNAME] had disposed of the mind behind the army and had returned to the city just in time to save [PRO_HISHER] brother.
After the invasion was stopped and Sarevok was healed, the dukes thought back on their choices and, on behalf of his actions and his [PRO_BROTHERSISTER]'s words, accepted Sarevok's candidacy in the forthcoming election. [CHARNAME] smiled, but Sarevok didn't. He was quite shocked by the fury he had shown against the orcs and asked himself if he was truly changed or not. What would happen if the old Sarevok were awakened by the power of being one of the ruling dukes... or even the Grand Duke himself? If an army of orcs could awaken the Deathbringer, what would ruling power do?
He silently bowed and turned, saying something only [CHARNAME] could understand. [PRO_HE_SHE] looked into Saervok's eyes and saw that, even if he didn't know it, he was truly changed: the old Sarevok wouldn't have rejected such an offer. "Where will you go?" His gaze went to the far east. He thought for a moment, then answered: "Someone has been waiting for me for too much time." Sarevok then left the city, never to come back again. When asked, [CHARNAME] never said what [PRO_HISHER] brother told [PRO_HIMHER], [PRO_HESHE] simply answered that the warrior left to repay an old debt.
No one truly knows what happened to him, no one knows that the reborn Sarevok journeyed to Kara-Tur to bury his one true love, the warrior Tamoko, then set on a final journey to find himself, never to be seen again.
---

I hope you liked it. :-)

Oh no!!!

Every [CHARNAME] was removed from the post because it was thought to be a HTML tag! :-(

I've removed the brackets, the ending is now readable.

Excuse me.

I like it.  It's a lot better than the current epilogue for Good Sarevok.

Telling the player what they say and do after the game is over should always be avoided.  Only in a romance epilogue can you get away with this, since it's fair to assume they have some attachment to the NPC.
Past: Ascension
Present: Return to Windspear
Future: Imoen Relationship

I see your point and I totally agree: telling the player what his character did after the end of the game is not good unless there's a fair chance he would have done that thing.
One example of these exceptions are romances, as you write.

I consider Sarevok's change of alignment just like a romance, since letting your first arch-enemy live (after having killed him a few moment earlier in the Pride test), letting him join your party, treating him well and persuading him to change his ways ("There is always another way.") show affection to him.

I consider it just like Viconia's change of alignment in her romance.

Thus, I believe what I make the PC say and do in this epilogue are in character with the kind of gameplay he used. :-)
