Nalia's starting class/stats
« on: May 16, 2004, 01:35:43 AM »
Just out of curiosity, are you going to leave Nalia as she started as, or are you going to tweak her stats or class a bit? Personally, I have no problem with her current config...but that's just me. *shrug*

Any plans to change her?

Nope. We went through a "what if we changed her to a swashbuckler?" thought experiment but it seemed like far too little payoff for the risk of appearing to meddle with the CRE just for the hell of it.

You can tweak her with the NPCs pack from the Gibberlings. :D This is what I did at least.

Heck you can tweak the heck out of her with Shadow Keeper all you want if you want her at a different class.

I know the FAQ says no stat changes, but I always thought that while her relatively weak stats were OK for her in SoA, in ToB they don't suit her whole I'm a powerful archmage thing. I read somewhere here that an archmage is a level 30+ mage - nothing else seems to come into it - but Nalia's low INT seems to be a big thorn in that.

Did you consider changing her stats at any time, JC?

No, not really. ("Nalia's low INT"? Low by what standard? Deities?) 2e D&D doesn't really account for stat progression. I'm not terribly worried about it.

I always figured the Archer class suited Nalia well - her practising archery seems more suited to her posh surroundings growing up than most other classes.

But yeah, there probably isn't much reason for the mod to tamper with her class. Individual players can easily do that if they wish to.

You'll be able to change Nalia's class, kit or experience level via Level 1 NPC mod easily, by the way:

Whoops...just went back and checked - yeah, 17 is not a bad INT. I guess DSimpson's FAQ review of her stats stuck in my mind, the stats didn't - he gave her a C+ - and made me think her INT was lower. Haven't used her in a long time, and waiting for the mod to do so  ;D

Yes, I know - I'm already tweaking things around. A great mod - wish Bioware had given us those choices. Some of those weapon choices for certain NPCs made no sense. Many cool weapons go unused because if CHARNAME isn't a frontliner, there's nobody who can use those weapons e.g. Spears, Halberds etc. Even the long bows can be used effectively only if the PC is an archer/fighter - makes no sense to use Minsc, despite his two points in that, as one, unless you use the bow that uses STR for damage and THAC0 boosts .

There's also a mod that changes Nalia from a Thief/Mage to a Mage/Thief( no changes in story, just a kit change) . I don't know if it tweaks her stats - and it's certainly incompatible with both the Bioware plot and JC's mod storywise - but it's an interesting take. It changes her from a Imoen's Project Image-role to someone more unique. Given how Jan/Yoshi/Imoen aren't everyone's cup of tea, Nalia would've been a cool thief. Nalia Romance v2, perhaps?   :P

I agree there's no real reason to change her class, though a higher thief level and an 18 intelligence would be nice. Of course, as others mentioned there's plenty of ways to change that already if we really want to.
By the way, in response to an earlier post, in 1st edition D&D (not sure if holds for other editions) an archmage is 18th level+.
I just want to add my thanks to the creators of this mod for getting it released, we all appreciate all your hard work and I look forward to playing it very soon.
