Install of MacEasyTutu without character creation CTDs
« on: November 22, 2009, 08:14:04 PM »
Because of the complete lack of CTDs regardless of character creation choices, I decided to document exactly how this install was created.

Notes for EasyTutu installation running on a 2.6 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo 17" MacBook Pro with 4 GB of 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM; booting from an external 800 Firewire drive configured with OS X 10.5.8.  [Internal drive is running OS X 10.6.2, and you really can't run EasyTutu effectively on Snow Leopard - you can slaughter and dress a steer in the time it takes to load and save games - works fine under Leopard however.  Native ToB runs a little slower under Snow Leopard, but nothing really terrible. It should be noted that the present tp2 install script for weidu-mac v211 fails under Snow Leopard - it asks for an administrator's password to perform installs into protected system directories, but never recognizes the password as valid - this process works fine under Leopard.]

1)  Used full install of ToB, with the official patch to 2.1.2.
2)  Renamed the ToB Music folder to BG2Music.
3)  Renamed the data and movie folders in a full install of ToSC to bg1data and bg1movies and moved them into the ToB folder.  Moved the Music folder in ToSC over to the ToB folder.  Threw away the ToSC folder.
4)  Unpacked the May 8, 2008 version of OSX-TutuCore_ToB.rar, and placed the unpacked files/folders inside the ToB folder, overwriting the existing files/folders, with the exception of the unpacked "data" folder, which was opened and the one file inside, "spawns.bif" was placed in the ToB folder "data".
5) Renamed the ToB folder to EasyTutu.
6) Placed the contents of OSX-Tutufix_v17 into the EasyTutu folder, and ran the command file.  In the subsequent Terminal window, chose the "Patch" option to patch EasyTutu so that it would set newly created characters to Level 1 (rather than BG2's seventh level creations).  The patch partially failed:

0x0051bc95 = 000001
0x00af0de5 = 000001
0x0051bca1 = 2625a0
0x00af0df1 = 2625a0

the first two in the list patched, the second two failed.  I didn't make any kit options (general forum commentary indicated that EasyTutu NPC Kits is the cleaner route to assigning kits to the BG1 NPC characters).

7) Installed the following using weidu-mac v211 (from weidu.org):

~SETUP-TUTUFIX.TP2~ #0 #2 // Restored BG1 Loadscreens
~SETUP-TUTUFIX.TP2~ #0 #3 // BG2 Ammo Stacks
~SETUP-TUTUFIX.TP2~ #0 #5 // BG1 Summoning Spells
~SETUP-EASYTUTUNPCKITS.TP2~ #0 #0 // Assign a kit to Ajantis? -> Ajantis: Cavalier
~SETUP-EASYTUTUNPCKITS.TP2~ #0 #7 // Assign a kit to Dynaheir? -> Dynaheir: Specialist Mage
~SETUP-EASYTUTUNPCKITS.TP2~ #0 #9 // Assign a kit to Edwin? -> Edwin: Specialist Mage
~SETUP-EASYTUTUNPCKITS.TP2~ #0 #13 // Assign a kit to Faldorn? -> Faldorn: Avenger
~SETUP-EASYTUTUNPCKITS.TP2~ #0 #17 // Assign a kit to Garrick? -> Garrick: Jester
~SETUP-EASYTUTUNPCKITS.TP2~ #0 #21 // Assign a kit to Imoen? -> Imoen: Swashbuckler
~SETUP-EASYTUTUNPCKITS.TP2~ #0 #27 // Assign a kit to Khalid? -> Khalid: Wizard Slayer
~SETUP-EASYTUTUNPCKITS.TP2~ #0 #29 // Assign a kit to Kivan? -> Kivan: Archer
~SETUP-EASYTUTUNPCKITS.TP2~ #0 #35 // Assign a kit to Safana? -> Safana: Assassin
~SETUP-EASYTUTUNPCKITS.TP2~ #0 #38 // Assign a kit to Shar-Teel? -> Shar-Teel: Barbarian
~SETUP-EASYTUTUNPCKITS.TP2~ #0 #45 // Assign a kit to Xan? -> Xan: Specialist Mage
~SETUP-EASYTUTUNPCKITS.TP2~ #0 #47 // Assign a kit to Xzar? -> Xzar: Specialist Mage
~SETUP-TUTUSOUNDS.TP2~ #0 #0 // Casting Sounds -> Restored BG1 Casting Sounds And Special Effects
~SETUP-TUTUSOUNDS.TP2~ #0 #2 // Restored BG1 Combat Sounds
~TXTMUSIC/TXTMUSIC.TP2~ #0 #0 // Restored Textscreen Music for BG1TuTu, EasyTutu, and BGT-WeiDU

Tutusounds v4 (a self extracted Windows executable) came from the pocketplane group web site.  I used VMWare Fusion for an emulator (VMWare supports cloning and I made an exact duplicate of my wife’s IBM T22 laptop -  instant PC XP SP3 in a window, and runs it better than the T22 ever did, and you can drag files between the two systems at will).  Some Mac archive software packages recognize self-extracting exe’s and can get the archived files out, but Fusion gives a lot of additional flexibility.  In any case, there are three files, setup-tutusounds.exe, setup-tutusounds.tp2, and a tutusounds folder after you expand tutusounds.exe.  I threw away “setup-tutusounds.exe” - that is just the PC version of weidu (weidu.exe), and placed copies of the tutusounds folder and setup-tutusounds.tp2 into the “EasyTutu” folder, and did the usual rename the weidu-mac file (to “setup-tutusounds”).  All of the sounds in the “tutusounds” folder are already WAVC files, there is no sound decompression software (sox) needed.    In OS X’s Application/Utilities folder, I started the Terminal application, getting the usual  prompt in a sparse window.  After the prompt, I typed “cd” and a space and dragged the EasyTutu Folder over the Terminal window to change directories to “EasyTutu”.  Typed the following (without the quotations): “./setup-tutusounds”.  Hit return and the mod’s tp2 script file ran perfectly.

Restored Text Screens Music (currently v7) put the original background music back into EasyTutu when the voiceover reads the introduction and dream sequence narratives, and were downloaded from Spellhold Studios: TxtMusic_ENG.rar and TxtMusic_v7.rar.  Unpacked (with UnRarX - what a great little utility - send the author the requested donation if used!) the TxtMusic_v7.rar and dragged the folder “TxtMusic” into EasyTutu.  Opened  the folder “TxtMusic” - inside are a number of files and folders.  Opened the “Language” folder then the “English” folder inside of it.  Now unpacked the “TxtMusic_ENG.rar” archive, and kept opening folders until at a list of ogg files (like dream1e.ogg).  Moved all the ogg files from that folder into the  “English” folder.  Closed the archives.  Closed the “Language” folder.  Now in the TxtMusic folder there was a TxtMusic.tp2 file and an oggdec.exe file.  Threw away the oggdec.exe file and replaced it with “sox” from the  weidu-mac 211 folder.  Opened the TxtMusic.tp2 file with OS X's standard TextEdit v1.5 text editor.  Did a find on all instances of “oggdec.exe” and replaced that with “sox”  to deal with compressed ogg sound files [for the curious, use the open source VLC media player to listen to ogg files without having to decompress them].   Did a find on all instances of “del” and replaced that with the Unix shell equivalent  “rm”.  Now here’s the tedious part.  Lots of tp2 scripts don’t have output file names in their scripts when using “oggdec.exe” because the default output is a WAV file with the exact same name as the input file.  Alas, sox doesn’t work that way.  It wants an output file name.  Hence, every line in TxtMusic.tp2 that said:

  AT_NOW ~TxtMusic/sox TxtMusic/Language/%LANGUAGE%/dream1e.ogg~

or this

  AT_NOW ~TxtMusic/sox TxtMusic/Language/English/A6PROLOG.ogg~

needed to be replaced with:

  AT_NOW ~TxtMusic/sox TxtMusic/Language/%LANGUAGE%/dream1e.ogg TxtMusic/Language/%LANGUAGE%/dream1e.WAV~

and this respectively:

  AT_NOW ~TxtMusic/sox TxtMusic/Language/English/A6PROLOG.ogg TxtMusic/Language/English/A6PROLOG.WAV~

There were 26 AT NOW lines that were modified.  Saved the the tp2 script file changes and closed the “TxtMusic” folder.   Changed the weidu executable name in the EasyTutu folder to “setup-TxtMusic” and ran “./setup-TxtMusic”  in the Terminal window.  Installed successfully.

8) I ran BG Config at this point, shut off 3D acceleration (I don't particularly care for degreenifier - too many places where the water is so transparent as to not be there - that said, the fact that it works at all is pretty amazing), set the color to 32 bit, set the game difficulty to "core rules", the performance sliders to maximum machine performance, and the screen size to 1024 x 768.

9) Put the ToB disk in the DVD drive so that the Bioware copy protection code could fondle it and started the game.  Got the Baldur's Gate starting screen (correct) and the BG2 ToB dialog about Watcher's Keep (not so correct, but simply chose the on-screen option "never show again" - problem solved).   Restored Text Screen Music worked great, with the opening spoken dialog nicely matching the scrolling text - good start!  Went to character creation and got a pleasant surprise - could make any character type with any kit - in my past creations of EasyTutu games, a number of race/occupation/kit choices would CTD - a known OS X tutu bug, but there were several arcane (but workable) fixes for this.

10) Game started normally, and CHARNAME was properly set to a Level 1 character.  Wandered around in Candlekeep, did the usual conversations and saved the game.  Created this document to post to a modder forum - perhaps someone can determine why this configuration doesn't display the CTD character creation bug.  My apologies for some of the tedious "mod install 101" commentary - I wrote the file originally for myself to put into the install folder, and then decided to post it.

A continuation of the earlier post:

=====================================================
Below this are additions to EasyTutu_L4 package.

11) I have a folder of properly formatted names that override the Bioware NPC portraits, called "tutu portraits".  Placed these in the EasyTutu portrait folder.

12) Installing store and item mods:

a) Herbs and Potions Add-in v1.0.3.  No install problems.

b) Thought about installing Aurora's Boots and Shoes v.3 here.  Several issues - when using the command file, got a permissions error.  Went into Terminal and used chmod +x [filename} and that cleared the permissions problem, but the OS still didn't like the use of the bin/sh command.  Created a setup-aurora (weidu-mac) and moved the tp2 file from the aurora folder and ran the script from the Terminal screen - everything started up normally.  Upon reading the readme file, realized that this mod is much more than just a new store - all kinds of alterations to store prices, cut scenes etc. - none of it bad, but I'll take the author's advice and install it just before global tweaks and gui mods.

c) Vedran's Lost Items version 2. This mod offers the option to install alternate portraits (I use portraits in the Easytutu portraits folder, so I'm never interested in installing portraits into the override folder.  This also sets Viconia's wisdom to 18, but I'm leaving that for later tweak packs.  Same comment re making Xan a sorcerer.  I did install the modification to give monks a better AC and Thac0.  Definitely skipped the "happy patch on NPCs not leaving" - removes too much of a fundamental component from the game.

d) Thalantyr Item Upgrade v3.6 - installed with no problem - no choices, just the mod.

e) Song and Silence v.4 - the command file hit a permissions issue, but simply using the Terminal screen worked fine.  Will need to modify command scripts via chmod.  I stopped before installing anything.  This mod wants Ashes of Embers to go first (universal weapons) and suggests installing Rogue Rebalancing first.  I need to read RR to see if that really makes sense.  Post research, RR clearly has done lots of compatibility testing - I'd say SandS goes first.  This installs core changes to thief classes, some of which will be overwritten by RR.  Went ahead and installed two of the nine new kits - burglar and sharpshooter, as well as the thief store at the Carnival.

Later in this process, I was looking at BoneHill v2.40 and trying to figure out how to change the bat files to sh files so it would install in EasyTutu.  I went back to look at how Song and Silence called sh script files, and discovered that the audio files had not installed into the override folder.  I had to modify the sh file by adding the line: chmod +x song_and_silence/audio/sox, so that sox would have permission to run.  Ran the sh script from Terminal, and all went fine.  Looks like I'm going to have to either make sure that copies of sox and tisunpack are in the EasyTutu folder or add permission statements to script files.  [Second note - I don't remember seeing a failure statement during the install - the tp2 does a operating system string check for "osx" to select whether to use wintel, osx or linux scripts.  I need to find out if weidu's operating string check still works for OS X 10.5 and later - it does, this was verified by uninstalling and re-installing Song and Silence with the new sh script file - the ogg's were decoded and installed into override correctly.]

13) Quest modifications:

a) Dark Horizons Tutu v2.02 - installed fine, auto skipped L40 rules (apparently only aimed at BG1 implementation).  Will not install Grey Clan on this instance (DH uses FAI for merchant caravan, and I want to test it without trusting that GC will put it all back when it's done with FAI - I'll test this sometime in the future).

b) BG Mini Quests and Encounters v4.1.  A simple and reliable quest mod.

c) Sirines' Call v9.  I find this mod to be surprising - not the game play so much, just the fact that for years there has supposedly been an "OSX" version of it that obviously doesn't install on OS X.  The install depends upon unpacking tiz files via tisunpack.exe and an install.bat file.  Well, OSX doesn't do exe's or bat's - try Unix executables and sh scripts.  There is no way for this mod to install properly on a Mac, without the same kind of changes done to a Windows only mod.  I simply unpacked the tiz files by hand using tisunpack from the weidu-mac 211 folder and placed the subsequent tis files in override.  I then edited the tp2 file so that instead of calling the bat file, it just echos "drag the tis files into override".  Now it works.

d) Stone of Askovar v1.5.  Based on the comments from the G3 forum on compatible tutu mods, I looked at the tp2 file before installation.  The test for tutu, tosc, or bgt was not set up for OS X - the slashes were in the wrong direction - changed them.  The tiz and ogg files were using exe's, so I unpacked them manually using their Unix equivalents and put them in the override folder, then disabled the "install.bat" file.  It created the Worldmap output files for the Worldmap to use, so we'll see how that goes.   Note that the OS X tutu character creation bug (CTD) has still not appeared.

e) I'll try the ironmoddertutupack another day.

f)  Secret of BoneHill v2.40.  I changed the tp2 file because there was a copy command of setup-bonehill.exe to weidu.exe.  Modified that to remove the exe's and then threw out the exe and replaced it with weidu-mac.  The call to a bat file at the end of the tp2 goes to BHAreas.bat. and when I made changes so that it would be BHAreas.sh, I started bleeding permission issues.  I couldn't even get tisunpack to load the tiz files, even though the path was correct.  When I executed the tisunpack line(s) at the Terminal prompt, everything was fine - go figure.

[Subsequent note after a successful install: there were two problems here: 1) the file had embedded control characters that tisunpack couldn't handle {that will teach me to not cut and paste between script files and non-script documents} and 2) the Unix version of tisunpack differentiates between lower and uppercase extensions when in a DO loop (see script below for the code) {nine of the 48 *.tiz files were written xxxxx.TIZ, and sure enough when I changed the extensions to all lowercase, I got all 48 tis files instead of 39 - it's always the little details ...}.]

I replaced the script for decompressing the sound files with the same style as in bgqe and that worked fine.  I could get weidu to produce bif files at the Terminal command line, but not through the sh script - this was a screw up on my part.  The weidu line needs to read "./weidu --out BH-REST --biff-get-rest AR0334.WED AR0334SR.BMP AR0334LM.BMP AR0334HT.BMP", not: "weidu --out BH-REST --biff-get-rest AR0334.WED AR0334SR.BMP AR0334LM.BMP AR0334HT.BMP" in the script.  The original script had a bunch of move commands to move items from the override folder into the tp2 created directory BH-REST.  I tried replacing it with the Unix mv command, and managed to move all of those files into the void, and then crashed the script - oops.  I still don't know why a simple change from "move override/BH*.* BH-REST" to "mv override/BH*.* BH-REST" would commit suicide, but it did.  That hosed the override file and BH-REST to the point that I decided that a fresh attempt at an install would be needed.  If I can get this script straightened out, the install should work.

[Follow on note: I have discovered the problem - when using the mv command to move a file to a directory, you have to put it as "directory_name/" not "directory_name" as you do in Windows/DOS ... duh - without the slash, the command assumes a rename, so all of those files basically overwrote themselves to one filename.]

Success!  Changes made to get SoBH to install on MacEasyTutu (and work better for me):

1) Added this: "README ~BoneHill/Readme-BoneHill.txt~" just below the author statement in the tp2, and took the readme out of the bat file (which called notebook to display the text file, which doesn't work for OS X).

2) Changed "COPY + ~Setup-BoneHil.exe~  ~WeiDU.exe~" to "COPY + ~Setup-BoneHill~  ~WeiDU~", in the tp2, so that it would look for Unix executables instead of Windows executables (and, of course, threw away setup-bonehill.exe and replaced it with weidu-mac renamed to setup-bonehill).

3) Changed "AT_INTERACTIVE_EXIT ~BoneHill/BHAreas.bat~ to "AT_INTERACTIVE_EXIT ~sh BoneHill/BHAreas.sh~", at the bottom of the tp2 so a Unix shell script gets used. (The uninstall should be changed as well, but right now I'm making complete duplicates of the game and throwing away any that fail to keep the mod testing pure.)

4) Changed the BHAreas.bat file:

==============================

I then applied the BoneHill v2.45 patch to this install (once again I had to change the tp2 from its reference to the exe version of weidu to one without the exe extension), and the patch installed fine.  I fired up a new game, and bummer, the long missing CTD character creation bug had returned!

I wanted to see if SOA and SoBH would actually work under a MacEasyTutu instance (aside from installing), so I installed just two more mods after this, BG2 Tweaks and Worldmap v7.1.  The rest of the weidu log (see the above post for the first part) looked like this:

~SETUP-BP-BGT-WORLDMAP.TP2~ #0 #1 // Worldmap for Baldur's Gate v7.1 - including colored Baldur's Gate map icons -> New Worldmap for use with TuTu/EasyTutu...: v7.1

14)  BG2 Tweaks v8 installed fine, no problems whatsoever.

15)  Worldmap 7.1 was a little more of a challenge, through no fault of its own.  I had to do the usual modification of the tp2 file to get rid of the exe references and replace them with their weidu-mac counterparts, no big deal.  The problem is that to unpack the compressed map file (worldmap_large.moz), you need to have a Unix equivalent of the Windows executable "mosunpack.exe".  Alas, although mospack 0.92 for OS X is floating out there on the Internet, it requires separate libraries to be loaded to make it work, and that's beyond my current capability/understanding.  So the Worldmap tp2 does all of the correct patching and file creation, except at the very end command:

 " AT_INTERACTIVE_EXIT ~BP-BGT_Worldmap/bin/mosunpack -s -f -o override/worldmap.mos BP-BGT_Worldmap/language/%LANGUAGE%/moz/worldmap_large.moz~".

Of course, without "worldmap.mos" in the override folder, the instance would CTD upon the first peek at the travel map.  Fortunately, firing up VMWare Fusion worked just fine.  I placed the moz file and mosunpack.exe in a Windows folder, dropped the moz file icon onto mosunpack.exe, and it unpacked itself to "worldmap_large.mos".  I changed the name, dropped it into the override folder, and started the game.  Since the character creation bug was now present, I exported a previously created character that had been saved at the start of a prior game to a character file, then imported it on a new game start.  That all worked, and so did the map, which slid around to show the various towns of the IE universe.  More extensive testing to follow ...

I then went back to an earlier copy of the game (just before the SoBH install), and installed Worldmap on that version.  Stone of Askavar's Worldmap files updated properly into the Worldmap, and everything works (including no character creation CTD bug - something about SoBH's extensive install/patching unfortunately brings that MacEasyTutu weakness back to life).

Hopefully, this long, long, long post will help the Mac users out there get a slightly easier to use version of MacEasyTutu as well as playing some mods that otherwise might not be as accessible.  It almost goes without saying that without the creativity and tremendous effort of the modder communities (and specifically the authors of all the mods mentioned above), my piddling little efforts would have to be applied somewhere that was not nearly as much fun.

Hello,

The mosunpack issue is currently an obstacle for me, as I need to install Worldmap 7.1 under Mac OS X so I can get TDD (and, after that, SoS) to install and work properly. I'm doing this for BGII - SoA/ToB, but not TuTu or BGT, as I've lost my BGI and ToSC game discs some time ago :( I'd like to know if there's a way to get mosunpack to execute, or if there's a work-around to otherwise get an unpacked and usable .mos file that I can drop into the override and play the game.

Thanks very much!
Eric

Thanks for all these details, they are great.  I had been trying to get TUTU to love Snow Leopard for about a week and forgot about booting the computer from an external drive with 10.4 or 10.5 so I will try that tonight!

Well at least this worked for me on easytutu for mac... and it's so simple i can't see why it wouldn't work for anyone else who's been frustrated over this problem.  and btw this is all thanks to MAyoung's post, otherwise i would NEVER have thought of this.

This issue seems to be with the baldur.ini file.  The crashes happen either when the game has been started once already and has loadedd its settings into baldur.ini, or i think it also occurs if you use the very basic baldur.ini from a fresh tob install without using BGConfig.  So anyway, all you need to do is open BGConfig after a fresh tob install and before opening the game for the first time and it will add its presets to baldur.ini -- you don't even need to make any config changes (though you can), just open it and close it again if you want just so it can load its settings.  Now command-D baldur.ini to make a copy, and then start the game.  If you've done things right, you should get 2 first-time-playing messages about something or other on your way into the main menu.  Then start a new game and create any character you want with no more lameass crashes!!

The only (minor) hitch is that your baldur.ini will only be friendly howdy-doooo during this first time opening the game.  If you quit the game and start it up again, the crashes at character creation return because the game adds settings to it whenever you quit that fuck the whole thing up again-- though looking at the file i couldn't tell which of these settings would cause something like this.  But who really cares anyway because now if you want to start a new game and create a new character you can just trash the bitch file and replace it with the copy you made after running BGConfig before (well, probably a copy of the copy you made before, i'd keep a master copy just for convenience).  Now if you just use a copy of this baldur.ini each time you need to make a new character, youre good to go.

Cheers to all, and thanks again MAYoung!
