Back on topic.

That chromatic orb works quite well, hehehe, just tried it.

Any advice on golems? I know clay golems need to be bludgeoned to death, but what's best?

As already said by discharger12, haste is a good one to try. And then just smash them.
Try not to get hit by a gollem because they slow you down severly and the beat you to pulp.

Try to get the big ones (iron and adamantine) syuck in some door, and then make hit-and-run attacks.
Let your cleric(s) heal your fighters if possible.

Gollems have al lot of magic resistance, so magic won't work on them. Maybe there's a spell wich deals with this, but I can't think of one right now.

Really cheep tactics that can be used to be Adaminte and Iron, use Melphs Minute Metorite. On every sucesfful hit it will do 2-3 damage to Iron, and 1 Damage to Adamite. You need ALOT of casting to kill one, but it works fairly efficently

Next creature - what about drow - and I mean with magic. Can any spells "bypass" their resistance?

I haven't tried it myself but my understanding is that Sunfire & Ice Storm bypass MR.

You may be thinking of Saving throws.. or am I?  ???

If you have no magical weapons to attack the iron golem in de'Arnise, you can use the hammer in the statue :)

And a few Lower Resistance spells work fine too. Just chuck magic missles, and they're gone

for golems........lower magic resistance is a must, that is if you want to kill them with spells (it'll just take a little longer than the old-fashioned way..... ;D) i don't remember exactly what I did but magic missile, skull trap, ice storm, cone of cold, chain lightning, disintegrate, delayed blast fireball, finger of death, moderkainen'd sword, bigby's clenched fist/crushing hand, are probably woth exploring

i agree that if you want to obliterate drow quickly dragon's breath is the way to go........comet is fun too though....wail of the banshee sometimes works well...summoning spells can also help....or if you have a well-equipped party (weapons and armor) you can bulldoze your way through

Sunfire has a target of 'self' and so it ignores the MR of creatures in the area of effect ... thus it works fine on drow.  This I know for a fact.

Ice Storm I'm not so sure of.

This is THE solution to a lot of critters, just walk trough them swinging bix and heavy weapons.
Lower Magic Resistance one of the most valuebale spells in the whole game.

'Having a well equipped party (weapons and armour)' is almost too cheesy and subtle as a hint.

Seeing as I deleted my account, I have no control over changing my old stuff, so I though I should just edit it from here.

I've also decided to add the 'Dungeons and Dragons 3rd Edition Monster Manual' descriptions. They may not be exactly like the creatures you see in BGII, but they are pretty fun to read.  ;)

I decided to post here a thing or two on how to kill aswell as a few things about individual monsters you see throughout SoA and ToB. Some things will be obvious, some things not-so obvious. Now and then I'll give it an update (hopefully more updates then the BGII story I posted a while back) Feel free to add anything, make a comment, ect. as I'm positive I will make many a mistake. Some time in the future I plan to say how much experience you get.

Note that this list does NOT include key characters such as Bodhi, Sendai, Mae'var and such.

There are a seldom few people like that I might list, like Kangaxx for example, but for now I'm sticking with the regular baddies.

The list goes in no particular order.

Troll 4/11/04

Besides the regular old troll, there are 5 types of trolls seen throughout the game. Ice trolls, Fire trolls, Spectral trolls, Sea Trolls (actually 1 I think), and another troll that I can not think of at the moment.. Cloudkill does them in significantly fast, fireball goes well, and regular old hack-and-slash will get them good. Remember that when they faint you need to use Acid or Fire on them, except the Fire trolls, which need acid or cold. The weakest trolls are Ice trolls. You seldom see these, but when you do, one or two hits and there down. Just pop out another acid or fire arrow, and there gone.

Vampires 5/5/04

Vampires are a tricky lot, especially for low levels characters. With their level draining powers they tear you apart. This is especially annoying when mages and clerics are level drained, as you need to go back to there spell boodks to redo their spells. Vampires have a little bit of magic resistance, so don't expect magic missiles to tear them apart. Use the cleric spell "Negative Plane Energy" do prevent level drainage. Use the Cleric spell "Lesser Restoration" for an individual drained party member or "Greater Restoration" for multiple drained party members..
The most effective spell against these fiends is the cleric spell "Sunray," also available for use through the long sword "Day Star" found in the Crooked Crane. I have yet to use "False dawn" though it is said to be a good spell. Fireball is also a good spell, used by a variety of people.

Remember that if you kill a vampire with a name (such as Dace) there may be a coffin nearby. To fully kill the vamp, you need to get a wooden stake and hammer it right into the coffin.

Core Rulebook III description:
Quote
Forever anchored to their coffins and the unholy earth of their graves, these nocturnal predators scheme constantly to strengthen themselves and fill the world with their foul progeny. Vampires appear just as they did in life, although their features are often hardened and feral, with the predatory look of wolves. Like liches, they often embrace finery and decadence and may assume the guise of nobility. Despite their human appearance, vampires can be easily recongnized, for they cast no shadows and throw no reflections in mirrors. Vampires speak any languages they knew in life.

Yuan-ti 5/5/04

Yuan-ti are lizard people, who are ALWAYS out to get you. There isn't even any Yuan-ti that will talk to you, except the one in the de'Arnise stronghold. There are two other types of Yuan-ti, besides the regular ones. Elite Yuan-ti and Yuan-ti who cast spells (forgot exact name) Normal
Both normal Yuan-ti and Elite Yuan-ti are fairly easy, and shouldn't be much of a problem even for low level players. A fireball or two, maybe an horrid wilting spell, should take them out pretty quick. The worst thing a Yuan-ti mage can do is cast chaos, which they tend to do quite a bit. Have any available mage cast breach and then have your fighters swoop in.

Yuan-ti=green. Elite Yuan-ti=redish brown. Mage Yuan-ti= Yellow with a bit of red.

Core Rulebook III description:
Quote
The yuan-ti are devout worshipers of evil. They also hold all reptiles in high esteem. The center of yuan-ti is the temple, and their rituals  often involve bloody sacrifices. They tend toward isolated, old ruins but have been known to build even underneath human cities. Yuan-ti are always secretive about the locations of a city or temple. Their architecture favors circles, with ramps and poles replacing stairs. The abominations rule over the yuan-ti and are the temple leaders, with the high priest (always human-headed) above all. Purebloods take care of all outside negotiations, always pretending to be human. The chief deity of the yuan-ti is Merrshaulk, who prompted and directed the formation of the line.

Dragons 9/12/04

Dragons come in a good variety of shapes and colors (all about the same size in the game) There is a Silver, Red, Blue, Shadow, and Black dragon. There are also two others that I can't think of, Abazigal's son, and the one you may have to fight in Hell. Besides just using their tails and claws to attack with, they also have there own special powers. Shadow dragons have deadly level draining, as well as acid breath, Red dragons use their fire breath, Blue dragons use spells and electric attacks, and Black dragons use web. Usually people tend to not fight the silver dragon that you encounter in the game, so I won't list any other of its powers.

Many people think of dragon battles as the toughest fights in the game. Other people say they are a pushover. Well, I'm the one of the people who say they are pushovers. That is, if you know what you're doing.

I've been told that Step #3 in the battle tips section works quite well, but I have another easier alternative. All you need is a mage who can deplete the dragon's magic resistance, a lightning wand with at least 6 charges in it, and maybe a few magic missles available. First off, as soon as you see the dragon, get its magic resistance off, if you didn't do this everything else I say will become null and void. Then get your wand at the ready. When you put the cursor over the dragon you should see a little number under it. Slowly click this over and over and see the number get bigger (or smaller.. I can't quite remember) this creates multiple charges. Then let it rip and see around 40 damage get ripped from the dragon
Keep doing this, and maybe cast a few magic missles, and things should fly by. I've tried this with every dragon and it works great!

Liches 4/18/04

Liches are some of the hardest magical creatures in FR. Some may be a bit easy, while some (like Kangaxx) will just plain scare the hell outta you!
When I first tried to figure out a technique to kill liches, I thought of the spell breach, which dispells all weapon protections. I tried this over and over, baffled as to why it didn't effect them whatsoever. Then Kish thoughtfully shed some light on the matter.

Quote from: Kish on April 14, 2004, 09:43:58 PM
Liches are immune to spells of levels 1-5.

They're also immune to unenchanted weapons.

Thanks Kish

You will have to use a higher level spell, which I'm currently looking into. I would say use Spell Strike, but that is a 9th level spell, and who wants to wait till then?

Umber Hulks 4/18/04

Umber hulks look like giant, green, beetle/dog like creatures. They are easy enough to kill, but their troublesome, eye-gazing confusion is what really can give you a headache.

One way to avoid this is to have a cleric cast "Chaotic Commands" which makes users immune to spells such as confusion, chaos, etc. This is really more trouble then its worth, so what I do is send in my weakest character (mage or thief) and all the Umber Hulks pelt him with confusion. It takes awhile to recharge this ability, so when all the hulks have done there business send in all the other characters to attack. If the confusion on that one person has not weared off, either wait, or cast "dispel magic"

Kish had this to say:

Quote from: Kish on April 18, 2004, 05:22:07 PM
Umber Hulks rarely make their saving throws against Chromatic Orb, and they have few enough hit dice to die if hit by a Cloudkill or Death Spell.

More later..

Tips before/during battles:

1. Haste is your best friend. Haste improves the speed of your attacks, tearing your enemies apart much faster then usual.

2. Remove fear is also a "Resist fear" spell. Casting this in fights can be helpful if your party members have low morale or your enemy cast spells such as "Cloak of Fear" or "Horror"

3. Abi-Dalzim's Horrid Wilting is a very effect spell against almost any creature. Just make sure your opponent doesn't have much magic resistance or spell protections on him.

4. Sunray is an excellent spell to use against the undead. I've learned it's most effective against Vampires, skeletons, and almost every types of shades. I'm told False Dawn is good too, but I've never gotten it to work  (Am I feeling deja vu?)

5. More later...

Well, there's only two of those in the entire game, as I recall.  Or is that protection from magic?  I do know that protection from undead is pretty rare.

Every temple in Athalatka has 2 protection from undead scrolls, plus Ribald and lady yuth both sell them.  The protection from magic is the rare ones.

Yeah, Protection from undead scrolls aren't rare, easily enough of em' to take out most if not all the liches in the game. They let me take out Kangaxx at low levels.

.....Of course there is the problem of finding weapons powerfull enough to actualy hurt him that early on.  :)

I think Magic Protection scrolls are really hard to find. Of course, with two fighters wielding +5 weapons and magic scrolls on, Kangaxx is pie :)

MY first post...yay!!!

thanks jester about mentioning g deathblow...

sunfire and ice storm (as well as dragon breath and firestorm) all ignore magic resistance, but can be saved for reduced damage...now stuff like comet, and bigby grasping fist ("must...restrain...fist...of...bigby!!! not quite the same effect... :( )  cannot be saved against, but can be resisted.

best way to kill undead, fire based spells, like inc cloud (I've interrupted lich spellcasting via script with inc cloud) firestorm, and sunfire...but demons are immune to fire, i find skull trap to be enourmously useful against demons...

here's a nasty evil trick...load up a spell sequencer with mirror image, skull trap and skull trap...cast it on YOURSELF...the mirror image will protect you from your own skull trap...

for killing liches, use a spell sequenced remove magic, or inquisitor dispell with a melee character...you don't need spellstrike, or any of that stuff, just remove combat protections, stoneskin and protection from magic weapons, and bash it to death...using magic against melee enemies and melee against magical spellcasters is the way to go... :P

A great trick I just found is using a spell contigency/trigger. You use one and store 3 Lower Magic Resistances, then rest. All those are cast instantaneously on the target.

2 lower resists, and a malison...

load up a triple abi dahzim's in the chain contingency...

try this with a tob aerie...

breach, malison, doom...chain 3 implosions...

implosions ignore magic resistance too... :o :o :o

ok, the major hang up many beginning, heck, even experienced sorcerors/mages have is that you NEED spell strike, khelbens warding whip, pierce shield...

nope!!!

only if you install tactics mod....

non-tactics, you only need breach, remove magic and dispell (for confused charmed members of your own party)

only with tactics mod will smarmy liches and smarter mages use the dreaded protection from magic weapons, protection from energy, spell immunity divination, spell immunity abjuration and improved invisibility combo...

unmodded game, you breach them, or remove magic them (use spell sequencer, dispell/remove magic despite being a 3rd level spell WORKS on liches) and have your fighters bash them with a big sword...

works every time...

tactics mod, you need a spell that can take down spell immunity, then you can remove magic them, or dispell them...specifically, the spell immunity abjuration...(which protects them from remove/dispell magic)

i personally use pierce shield, which can target liches that are improved invisible in a chain contingency...

actually you really don't need all this junk...

just buy azuredge...most liches will put up spell immunity, protection from energy, and other magical protections FIRST...a improved hasted fighter will usually be able to get enough hits in to blast them with azuredge's power, and voila!!!

 :D :D :D

A previous usefull attempt to create a "How to deal with..." is at http://mysticsyn.tripod.com/Monsters.htm , I not suggesting that its the best or the last word, but you may like to check it out for ideas on what to do next.

Once what you have hits a critical mass, maybe you could write a personal tutorial, or put it up as read-only web resource, here or some where else.
