How to kill your monster and helpful tips 4/18/04
« on: April 09, 2004, 02:21:26 PM »
Instead of the usual useless stuff I post, I decided to post here a thing or two on how to kill aswell as a few things about individual monsters you see throughout SoA and ToB. Some things will be obvious, some things not-so obvious. Now and then I'll give it an update (hopefully more updates then the BGII story I posted a while back) Feel free to add anything, make a comment, ect. as I'm positive I will make many a mistake. Some time in the future I plan to say how much experience you get.

Note that this list does NOT include key characters such as Bodhi, Sendai, Mae'var and such.

There are a seldom few people like that I might list, like Kangaxx for example, but for now I'm sticking with the regular baddies.

The list goes in no particular order.

Troll 4/11/04

Besides the regular old troll, there are 5 types of trolls seen throughout the game. Ice trolls, Fire trolls, Spectral trolls, Sea Trolls (actually 1 I think), and another troll that I can not think of at the moment.. Cloudkill does them in significantly fast, fireball goes well, and regular old hack-and-slash will get them good. Remember that when they faint you need to use Acid or Fire on them, except the Fire trolls, which need acid or cold. The weakest trolls are Ice trolls. You seldom see these, but when you do, one or two hits and there down. Just pop out another acid or fire arrow, and there gone.

Vampires 4/10/04

Vampires are a tricky lot, especially for low levels characters. With their level draining powers they tear you apart. This is especially annoying when mages and clerics are level drained, as you need to go back to there spell books to redo their spells. Vampires have a little bit of magic resistance, so don't expect magic missiles to tear them apart. Use the cleric spell "Negative Plane Energy" do prevent level drainage. Use the Cleric spell "Lesser Restoration" for an individual drained party member or "Greater Restoration" for multiple drained party members..
The most effective spell against these fiends is the cleric spell "Sunray," also available for use through the long sword "Day Star" found in the Crooked Crane. I have yet to use "False dawn" though it is said to be a good spell. Fireball is also a good spell, used by a variety of people.

Remember that if you kill a vampire with a name (such as Dace) there may be a coffin nearby. To fully kill the vamp, you need to get a wooden stake and hammer it right into the coffin.

Yuan-ti 4/11/04

Yuan-ti are lizard people, who are ALWAYS out to get you. There isn't even any Yuan-ti that will talk to you, except the one in the de'Arnise stronghold. There are two other types of Yuan-ti, besides the regular ones. Elite Yuan-ti and Yuan-ti who cast spells (forgot exact name) Normal
Both normal Yuan-ti and Elite Yuan-ti are fairly easy, and shouldn't be much of a problem even for low level players. A fireball or two, maybe an horrid wilting spell, should take them out pretty quick. The worst thing a Yuan-ti mage can do is cast chaos, which they tend to do quite a bit. Have any available mage cast breach and then have your fighters swoop in.

Yuan-ti=green. Elite Yuan-ti=redish brown. Mage Yuan-ti= Yellow with a bit of red.

Dragons 9/12/04

Dragons come in a good variety of shapes and colors (all about the same size in the game) There is a Silver, Red, Blue, Shadow, and Black dragon. There are also two others that I can't think of, Abazigal's son, and the one you may have to fight in Hell. Besides just using their tails and claws to attack with, they also have there own special powers. Shadow dragons have deadly level draining, as well as acid breath, Red dragons use their fire breath, Blue dragons use spells and electric attacks, and Black dragons use web. Usually people tend to not fight the silver dragon that you encounter in the game, so I won't list any other of its powers.

Many people think of dragon battles as the toughest fights in the game. Other people say they are a pushover. Well, I'm the one of the people who say they are pushovers. That is, if you know what you're doing.

I've been told that Step #3 in the battle tips section works quite well, but I have another easier alternative. All you need is a mage who can deplete the dragon's magic resistance, a lightning wand with at least 6 charges in it, and maybe a few magic missles available. First off, as soon as you see the dragon, get its magic resistance off, if you didn't do this everything else I say will become null and void. Then get your wand at the ready. When you put the cursor over the dragon you should see a little number under it. Slowly click this over and over and see the number get bigger (or smaller.. I can't quite remember) this creates multiple charges. Then let it rip and see around 40 damage get ripped from the dragon  :)
Keep doing this, and maybe cast a few magic missles, and things should fly by. I've tried this with every dragon and it works great!

Liches 4/18/04

Liches are some of the hardest magical creatures in FR. Some may be a bit easy, while some (like Kangaxx) will just plain scare the hell outta you!
When I first tried to figure out a technique to kill liches, I thought of the spell breach, which dispells all weapon protections. I tried this over and over, baffled as to why it didn't effect them whatsoever. Then Kish thoughtfully shed some light on the matter.

Liches are immune to spells of levels 1-5.

They're also immune to unenchanted weapons.

Thanks Kish :)

You will have to use a higher level spell, which I'm currently looking into. I would say use Spell Strike, but that is a 9th level spell, and who wants to wait till then?

Umber Hulks 4/18/04

Umber hulks look like giant, green, beetle/dog like creatures. They are easy enough to kill, but their troublesome, eye-gazing confusion is what really can give you a headache.

One way to avoid this is to have a cleric cast "Chaotic Commands" which makes users immune to spells such as confusion, chaos, etc. This is really more trouble then its worth, so what I do is send in my weakest character (mage or thief) and all the Umber Hulks pelt him with confusion. It takes awhile to recharge this ability, so when all the hulks have done there business send in all the other characters to attack. If the confusion on that one person has not weared off, either wait, or cast "dispel magic"

Kish had this to say:

Umber Hulks rarely make their saving throws against Chromatic Orb, and they have few enough hit dice to die if hit by a Cloudkill or Death Spell.

More later..

Tips before/during battles:

1. Haste is your best friend. Haste improves the speed of your attacks, tearing your enemies apart much faster then usual.

2. Remove fear is also a "Resist fear" spell. Casting this in fights can be helpful if your party members have low morale or your enemy cast spells such as "Cloak of Fear" or "Horror"

3. Abi-Dalzim's Horrid Wilting is a very effect spell against almost any creature. Just make sure your opponent doesn't have much magic resistance or spell protections on him.

4. Sunray is an excellent spell to use against the undead. I've learned it's most effective against Vampires, skeletons, and almost every types of shades. I'm told False Dawn is good too, but I've never gotten it to work :P (Am I feeling deja vu?)

5. More later...

Ugh, blade barrier always ends with me accidentally injuring/killing my own compatriots.  :-\

Vampires - I love the cleric spell False Dawn. Love it, love it. Sunray is also great.

Hell, you don't even need that after Anomen levels up a few times. Just send him alone into the vampire nest wearing that necklace thing Linvail gives yah, *maybe* with the mace of disruption (not really neccesary) and have him turn undead. BOOM! Their heads a splode!!

For mages just before they get their spell protections up, Melf's Acid arrow.  Interrupts their casting.  Would drive me nuts if i was the victim.

Nesquaam- I don't really use Blade Barrier much, it hurts your own NPC's more then your enemies (well at least for me)

Cliffette and Queen_Akasha- I agree  ;D

Mongoose- Very good idea  :)

Keep it coming guys, this stuff is great.

For dragons, one of my best methods is to have my fighters engage while my mage casts lower resistance. Then use millions of magic missiles!!! Only 2-3 will get through to hit, but that's 12-15 damage.

For me its only like 3-5 damage each. What really works is Lower Resistance and then multiple bolts from lightening wand. Try it :)

For Mind Flayers or Illithids, the easiest way to beat them is to cast Mordinkaidin's(sp?) Sword. As the sword has no brain to drain, the illithid's most powerful attack is useless. Send the sword in first. You can either let it kill everything on its own, or you can wait a bit until the illithid's attention is focused on the sword, and run in and slaughter them while they attack it.

Web en Cloudkill (Know it's lame, but hey, it works).

And Discharger=> You're not supposed to stand next to your NPC's when using Blade Barrier.
Just send your cleric in.

Yes, because my attention span = short, and your summaries are shorter :). Also, it can't hurt to have everyone throwing their own battle tactics/tips in and having them summarised somewhere.
