Windows Vista Problems?
« on: April 09, 2007, 12:21:18 PM »
Just got a new comp with Vista. BG2 seems to run normally, but Weidu based mods don't seem to be functioning, though they seem to install normally. So far, I've been unable to get the Imoen Romance, the G3 BG2 Tweakpack & Dungeon Be Gone to work.

Anyone else having problems like this?

In one of his uncountable moves to ban competition, all executables not compiled with Microsoft's compilers are limited to 32 Mb of ram on Vista (E.G. WeiDU is compiled with gcc). I'm not going to put any amount of money and/or time in M$ products, so you can simply weep for having found a worst way to spend $600 than buying a PS3.

32 mb Microsoft raaaaaaaagh
Have you tested it?

Based on information like http://www.justlinux.com/forum/showthread.php?threadid=148839 , I suspect if there is a Vista problem it has more to do with the new "stop changing your own files" security provisions than memory space, I doubt WeiDU is a DPMI application.

Don't blame you. Didn't have much choice, though; the old model was going belly up fast.

Thanks...been banging my head on the desk for several days trying to figure it out.

Before you ditch your OS, see if you can run the WeiDU installers in whatever administrative mode you can muster. Reduce the protections Vista puts on the files. Whatever.

The installations seem to run fine; I get the same DOS screen that I always got, and it says that the program is successfuly installed. The mods just don't work in-game.

Check the date on your dialog.tlk file. Has it been updated recently, or is it as old as (say) bgmain.exe?

A good way to check it is this:

- Check the size and date on dialog.tlk

- Install a new mod you've never installed before OR reinstall an existing mod but use a different language (obviously, it will need to be a translated mod--many NPCs, banter packs, etc. will do this.)

- Check the size and date on dialog.tlk again. If they are unchanged, it's a Vista problem, or you're just generically not installing mods correctly. Have you been through all of the basic support stuff on how to install mods properly (not running the game at the same time, not having editing tools open, etc.)?

How am I going to test it anyway? I don't have a machine with both 40 Gb of HD free and 512 Mb of RAM. However, Microsoft gives the full source code of Windows 2003 Server to OS teachers so that they might teach that rather than Unix/Linux in Operating Systems courses. Surprise surprise, the scheduler contains a section that says "if (compiler == Borland) then (do something) else (do something else)", where something is bad for performance.
(obviously, he isn't supposed to show us the code or, worse, allow us to post it over the net, so you'll have to take my word  for thatand/or buy Windows Server 2003 and run the same code under Borland, gcc and VC++ and notice any difference in speed there might be).

damn windows "Bugsta" making me and my friends' older games not work.

i love those game too much to stop playing them luckily i have comps wit holder OS' on them.

i probably wont get "bugsta" i mean vista until its realitively bug free, or until i absolutely have to screw XP Pro and get vista. until then im happy with what ive got, it works for what i need it to, i dont see why i should have t oupgrade if i dont need except for the reason of i can.

Vista Ultimate on a laptop with 1024mb Ram.  weidu v198 and 199 work fine, Dungeon be Gone, fixpack, bg2tweaks all installed and work fine.  I have a thread on working games here:  http://forums.spellholdstudios.net/index.php?showtopic=25065&hl=vista

Sneakernet?

source code compilers etc.

That may be, but it doesn't seem to be what's going on here, and it looks more like our friend Kendris is having either an administrative privilege problem or a general Not Actually Installing Mods Correctly problem, and not some sort of "Bill Gates Hates GPL Mod Installation Tools" problem.

I did the following to my BG2 directory, even though I don't think it's needed. I installed mods with no problem before this.

  • Right click on your BGII - SoA folder
  • Click on the Security Tab
  • Click the advanced button
  • Click on the owner tab
  • Click 'edit' and make sure that your account is selected then hit 'apply' and 'ok'.
  • Close the Advanced window, so you now are on the security tab. Select "users" in the top menu, and hit edit
  • Select users, check all boxes, hit ok.

Setup:
Windows Vista Ultimate Edition
Dual-Core 3.0 processors
1GB of Ram
145GB HD

For the record, being a person who has used a computer every day of his life since early childhood, Vista is a vast improvement from XP, jush as XP was an improvement from 2000, which was an improvement from 98, which was an improvement from 95, etc.
