can I run BG1 in 800x600 (w/o the bg2 engine?)
« on: October 22, 2006, 09:31:42 PM »
My tv doesn't do 640x480, so when I run bg1 alot of the picture is cut off.  I don't want to run BG1 with all the new BG2 classes and such.  Is there anyway to make BG1 run in 800x600 and nothing more?  Is there any kind of mod that will do this?  Or is there any kind of external program that will force the window into 800x600?

Nope, unless you're prepared to wait a couple of years for a fully functional version of GemRB to be released.

In the mean time, if you want higher resolution but you don't want the new BG2 classes, the answer would seem simple: don't use them! ;)  After all, it's not as if the game forces you to be a barbarian, monk, or sorcerer, or to select a kit.  Your PC can still be a plain old regular fighter, cleric, mage, etc if you want him or her to be, and changes to NPC classes and kits are entirely optional.

Heck, you can even bring back the BG1 GUI, the BG1 weapon proficiencies, etc if you want a truly authentic experience.

Ah, could you point me to the mod I need for the old weapon proficiencies?  Does it remove duel wielding also?

The "Alter Weapon Proficiency System" component is what you want.  There's actually three variants of it: one is a slightly tweaked version of the BG2 proficiencies, the other two bring back the BG1 proficiencies.  One variant keeps weapon styles, and the other one removes them.

You'll still be able to dual-wield in-game, as AFAIK there's no way to prevent that.  You can of course simply not place a weapon in the off-hand slot :).

thanks man, that'll have to be good enough for now..   I'm so frustrated, I've found programs that can turn my Baldur's Gate 1 window into any resolution I want, as long as I'm not in full screen, as soon as I go to full screen it kicks it back into 640x480, and I don't get the whole picture.  I just wish there was a program that would say, when BGmain.exe opens, run it at 800x600.  I can do it in windowed mode, I don't understand why I can't do it in full screen.
