Freedom for Vithal crashes game

And there you have it -- casting Freedom in the Underdark always crashes the game for me. I have no idea why, since I have not a single mod installed that messes with the Underdark. (Unless some anti-romancing Baldurdash/Flirtpack stuff.) Has anyone else suffered this?

It's been a couple of years since I did the Vithal bit now. It worked as it should on my old machine (Win98), but has never worked since (a couple of XPs). As soon as I click the scroll quick-slot the game goes down on me. (Spare me ye olde double-entendres, though.)
