Happy World Cup
« on: June 09, 2006, 12:04:06 AM »
Whoever you are, wherever you're from (but especially if your from england or australia), and wherever you're watching from, take moment to breathe it all in:  more than a billion people united in sport.  Paint your face, have a pint, and think about something that the whole world participates in, for the sheer joy of it.  We're all human, and sometimes we do beautiful things for the sheer, selfish human impulse of wanting to.

cheers.
Hey yo, I know this dude right.
Carl, he wore tight blue sweats, but wasn't glued too tight.  all he had upstairs was a crude light
you think that's weird, he lived next door to a food fight.

I can't escape the World Cup in my day to day life - can we please not discuss it here too?  It's driving those of us who don't give a damn about football completely mental. :-\

I enjoy the WC as I will finally get some time to play a game again after months, since evening events will be tuned down or all football themed. Hooray whoeveryouare!

wow, didn't realize you were all so bitter.  I guess "uncle's" trips to stadiums weren't quite so fun for you guys.  don't let a little underage molestation deter you.  You can get over your fears and painful memories and partake in global society once more.

No, not really, I just can't imagine why you all would hate it so much.

yes, andyr, we are an unstoppable wave of hooligans, and we will sweep you up, forever becoming a billion + 1 (like some kind of mutated swamp version of the flinstone kids, hahahaha).

anyway, I didn't mean to piss everybody off, I just thought in complicated times, with a lot of mistrust and misinformation winging it's way around the world, sometimes something as simple as a football match can help remind us of what we share.  It's bit idealistic and naive, but sometimes that's not such a bad thing.  So I'll restate it for everyone, loud and proud,

'ave a 'appy World Cup, everybody

ancora tu, il grande!!

Some of us just aren't fans. And we don't want to see "OMG WORLD CUP OMG FOOTBALL OMG" everywhere. Because we're simply not fans. It's really not that complex a concept when you think about it. Although judging by what you assumed the reason for our dislike is I really must wonder if you're capable of thought...

Oh good grief. I'm not much of a sports fan either, but I don't feel the need to shit all over people who are.

I'm not saying people can't enjoy it, I'm just asking that they enjoy it in private.  I get very excited about Wimbledon, but I don't feel the need for it to take over every aspect of people's lives.

I'm very touchy on this subject at the moment due to the fact that the BBC gave more coverage on the news this morning to the impending World Cup than they did to the unveiling of a preventative drug for cervical cancer, Herceptin being made available on the NHS or retaliatory bomb blasts in Iraq.  It's ridiculous.

EDIT:  Oh, and because, as a Scot, I get accused of being a bigot for not supporting England in the World Cup, despite the fact that I don't give a shit who wins.  People take this stuff far too seriously.

Yeah, those news items do deserve more coverage, but that's a problem with the news, not with one excited guy on PPG.

A general discussion forum where you can't generally discuss the things that interest you is kinda... sad.  :-\

Those of you who would like to escape the World Cup madness are welcome to come visit us in the States.  Here, the World Cup is not much of a big deal, and "football" is a whole other sport.

Wait a minute... you mean there's another kind of Football?

Hmmm...

Nah. No way. The NFL would never allow it. ;)

(besides, real people only play Rugby. There's no fun if no-one gets hurt! ;D)

"I'm not saying people can't enjoy it, I'm just asking that they enjoy it in private"

That's how I feel about people and their religions.  ;D

Soccer, as it's called here in the US, was big where I used to live late 40s early 50s but US football pushed it out of the limelight. Just consider, the soccer games I went to were free while I had the priviledge of paying to see a football competition. Beside all those time outs make great spots for commercials. None of that stuff in Soccer. Then there's half-time and boobies!  :o

Playing football is great. I even took time out to learn some 'mad skillz'. But I've never seen the attraction of watching it- sure, you can enjoy the display of skill, the atmosphere etc, but football these days (along with several other sports) has way too much money in it, hence all the players dive all the time trying to get a foul, play dull but effective tactics and so on.

And it's quite possible to argue that the world cup is bad news, given how often we're told in england how everyone and their dog is a hooligan. I love that word. But seriously.

well, whatever it is that makes the chills run down your spine, that fills you with an excitement that spans the senses, that has to do with other people, the world over, in an illusionary solidarity or not, over the course of the next month, i hope you bloody well enjoy it.

Bex, why are there fewer bonfires in Edmonton now, that Oilers are just a step away from winning the Stanley Cup?

Why, dare I ask, are you taking it so personally that a few people don't care about football?  It's not the end of the world.
