Possible conflict with Mazzy and Gorf the Squisher

I've come across a problem which doesn't appear to have been reported previously.  I have tried searching, but found nothing.  Aplogies in advance if this has already been noted elsewhere.  If you remove Surly from the Copper Coronet and at a later time pick up Mazzy the "Gorf the Squisher" plot becomes stalled.  The only way I found to resolve this was to use the console and CLUAConsole:CreateCreature("Surly").

What version are you using? From v2 onwards, Surly shouldn't be required, and I think you can speak to Lehtinan or Hendak about use of the pit. (Mazzy should hint "We should speak with someone in charge, <CHARNAME>, if I am to deal with this Gorf.")
