Any interest in IWD tutu?
« on: July 07, 2005, 07:00:15 AM »
Looking receantly at IWG I thought that maybe the code could be used to make a IWD tutu, and I wondered whether there would be interest in such a project?

While it might be interesting to play IWD with 3E rules, I think that IWD to BG2 is the most logical engine conversion for IWD.

Most logical from a technical standpoint, possibly not. More appealing, certainly!

but what would be the benefits of such conversion? Only kits... I think that 3e rules would be a more worthwhile change. Plus IWD2's interface...

NPCs.
But you'd have to "write" those NPCs cause IWD1 also doesn't have any. Besides I think it would be possible to do joinable characters on IWD2 engine, though being far from an expert I may be wrong.

Anyway I think that IWD tutu may be a good idea cause it would (or so it seems) require a limited number of changes to IWG code, simply because most of the things that do not convert properly from BG2 to IWD2 do not exist in IWD1. And despite 3e rules it should be still easier than conversion to bg2 engine.

IWD -> BG2 would be nice, but personally I'd prefer IWD2 -> BG2 :).

OK, you probably know better, my idea for doing this was theoretical... Anyway adding NPCs is rather like making a big mod not just converting game to new engine but keeping the gameplay as it were.

So anyone seriously interested in doing this?

I must say this comes as a suprise, as much as I love BG2 I always prefered the gameplay under IWD2 engine - subraces, 3e rules, difficulty settings that finally do something, interface with configurable buttons, no more going into the inventory to switch between dual weapons or weapon with shield nad a e.g. bow... and so on. This doesn't mean I wouldn't be thrilled to play IWD1>BG2 conversion, but I find IWD1>IWD2 conversion more plausible and beneficial.

What is "IWD tutu"? This whole conversation has me confused. If at any point someone is suggesting making it so you can play IWD  on BG2's engine, what would be the point of that? ICD's weak story on BG2 weaker combat engine? Otherwise would someone please clear up exactly whats being suggested? When descring icewind gate, would you describe it as " IWD2 -> BG2"? Or the other way around?

Icewind gate was supposed to be bg2>iwd2 engine, but icewind gate is dead... "inspired" by its code was the highly successful bg tutu project (bg to bg two) I'm trying to find (and failing) modders interested in doing IWd1 > IWD2 conversion, since my experiments with current IWG beta show it to be doable. But I won't do it on my own... In the meantime there appeared suggestion of iwd1>bg2 conversion, which might be tempting should people would like to mod IWD1, adding story, npcs or whatever...

iwd1>bg2
You can play Never Ending Jorney in the mean time, even though it starts at level 7, ends at the Dragon's Eye, and is too difficult at the beginning (Vale of Shadows) and doesn't change the difficulty at the DE.

Isn't it a bit buggy? Anyway I'll still opt for a proper conversion to IWD2 engine, if only for the series consistency.

I must say that a iwd tutu conversion sounds extremely interesting to me. In fact it was something that i wanted to propose myself. Given the difficulty in porting bg2 to iwd2 and the fact that porting bg1 to 2 is has been possible, it seems logical that a port of iwd1 to 2 is possible too, since iwd2 was based on the iwd 1 version of the infinity engine.

Certainly, iwd and iwd2 are dungeon crawls and at their best include some rpg elements. That is why porting iwd to bg2 engine does not sound as reasonable to me since i do not play this games for their rpg experience but for the mass combat. It's a shame that the original iwd 2nd edition rules seem antiquated to me now. I am currently playing iwd2 and having a blast, despite the many bugs in the game. IWD with 3rd edition rules would certainly make me replay the game since it would greatly increase the player's options in char development, something that every dungeon crawl should provide.

Glad to hear, but are you interested in being part of the project?
PS. What bugs? I know of 1, plus a few very minor glitches.

well i hate glitches, so i consider them all bugs. The most annoying one i found was when i killed the guardian dragon and not all my char got the bonus hp and acid resistance, so i had to reload and kill him again.

Which dragon was that? The one in reptilian temple? If you have any "bugs" placed correctly post them, maybe some fix will be doable. BTW I see you registered, welcome to PPG!

I'm interested in a conversion of IWD to either IWD2 or BG2, although I suspect that a conversion to IWD2 would be easier since they both have parties.  I've never modded before but I'm willing to help out on this mod.  Given a decent set of things to start on, I'm pretty good at figuring other stuff out.

So count me in!

Indeed it would. Indeed it would.
It would give IWD a little more variation than fighter, fighter, fighter, cleric, thief and mage.
Or it is just my pessimism talking.

Yes it's your pessimism. ;D  Bards and druids (after HOW) are quite powerful in IWD1

Heh, I have actually never played with a bard through entire IWD: HOW, but I have played with a druid, and I admit they gets powerful. I still remember the first time I unleashed a Whirlwind.

In IWD1:HOW and IWD2 bards are the most "cheesy" class there is due to one thing - war chant of the sith.
