IIRC one is for Player1, one is for multi-player generated characters, and the third is for joinable NPCs, including originals like Aerie and mod ones like Solaufein.
The Gibberlings Three - Home of IE Mods

The BG2 Fixpack - All the fixes of Baldurdash, plus a few hundred more. Now available, with more fixes being added in every release.

"Of these, the important ones are DPLAYER2.BCS, which is assigned to all party members on joining, and DPLAYER3.BCS, which runs on the protragonist. However, these scripts are deactivated when the party AI is turned off." :)
