For some reason, I thought this thread was going to be about me.

I thought it was going to be about Corvis.

I like Krispy Kreme donuts. They're about the unhealthiest food on the planet, and make no pretense otherwise. Pure fat and sugar. Yummy! They aren't very ubiquitous for a national chain, either. I didn't discover them until I moved to New York.

I stopped eating them after I found a fly in mine.  :-X

On topic: I really don't see this problem though. I mean, as long as everyone doesn't go to the Starbucks, things can't go wrong.

Yes, hopefully it will die.(Yes, the MacDonalds did die  :)...But the people who go to Lygon St aren't going there for bad hamburgers. They are however going there for coffee.)
I am worried because this is the second SB. What about when they start opening up in places where there is less competition? What will happen to the small family businesses? Will my city become bland and lose its individuality? Will it become impossible to simply order a cafe latte? Look at what is happening in Canada! They are drinking beverages that are not readily identifiable! Will it come to pass that coffee becomes an unrecognisable language to me? (Already dangerously close as it is...)  Will coffee become the province of wankers only?

No, not really... Tim Hortons hasn't hurt the chic espresso places in Canada. There's a ton of them. Not all humans are mindless automatons that go to the huge chains and forsake the smaller operations.

I think Canada is bigger than Melbourne. And I don't want to go to chic coffee houses. I want to go to my homely family run ones where they lovingly make little patterns in the froth on the top. And everyone is called Gianni. Or Rosa.

And as for people not being mindless automatons, we have just voted in John Howard AGAIN here. My faith in human nature  is dead.

Aussies and John Howard is beyond explanation for me other than his opponent's shortcomings. His own should be known by now. :/

If you add caffeine to the equation you might end up irritating your favourite co-worker who told you to get her a half-half douple triple. And what does she get? A decaf cream almond barrista special with chocolate flakes and a voucher for a blueberry muffin at half price. :P

Nothing wrong with indulging in junk food now and then.  However, I've tried Krisy Kremes, and I think the "cream" inside some of the donuts is disgusting.  I just didn't like the taste.  I didn't think the glazed donuts were much better, and I usually like glazed donuts.

I hate cream-filled donuts on general principles. I like the chocolate glazed ones best. And I love Krispy Kreme donuts, but hate Starbuck's coffee. It tastes like dirt.

Besides Starbuck's apparent attempt to take over the world, I dislike them for another reason. I worked for a literary magazine in college, and we posted our stuff at every coffee shop, and there were plenty in East Lansing. It was against Starbucks policy to allow college students to post things about events, because they wanted every Starbucks to look exactly the same. We thought about getting people to start a boycott, but since no one knew anyone who went to Starbucks in the first place, we decided it would be rather redundant.

On what "general principles" don't you like cream-filled donuts?  As I enjoy a cream-filled long john now and again (ok, not really filled with cream but custard; all the best long johns are filled with vanilla custard), I'm just curious.

And I do think it's funny that you absolve Krispy Kreme from taking over the world in the same vein as Starbucks (and I will admit that I've never had one, even though I'm assured they are "to die for"); they're everywhere.  And I *like* the dirt taste of Starbucks.  But then I like McDonald's fries, too.  Even after watching "SuperSize Me".  ;)

I don't think chains are inherently evil. I think chains that have a franchise on every single block, drive out small businesses, and have business practices I find icky, like not allowing students in a college community to post information about a poetry reading, are evil. Also, calling a small coffee "tall" or "grande" or "mucho hugo gonzaga bigness", or whatever it is now, deeply annoys me. Where are Krispy Kremes everywhere? There are a couple in Manhattan, one in Harlem (which is also Manhattan, but anyway), one in Tampa... that's all I've ever seen. They aren't in Michigan, or weren't 2 years ago. Now I just know someone's going to come along and tell me Krispy Kreme uses slave labor to harvest their sugar or something...

Krispy Kreme was founded in NC. They did not branch out of the Southeastern US until the late 90s, when they hit Manhattan. I was raised on Krispy Kremes, since I live in NC and more than half of the school fundraisers when I was growing up involved selling boxes by the dozen. Nowadays, I only allow myself a doughnut once or twice a year, but when I have one, it's Custard Filled with Chocolate Icing. Nothing tops that doughnut on my dessert list except carrot cake.

Starbucks coffee comes in over two dozen blends. They differ in acidity, aroma, body, and flavor notes. I've never eaten dirt, so all I can say is my favorites, Caffe Verona and Sumatra, are distinctly different in terms of strength and smoothness.  Caffe Verona is effortless to drink and inherently sweet enough that I'd never dream of adding more than a little milk. Sumatra is a serious wake-up kind of cup, with a robust kick, and it's delicious to smell while brewing.

While Starbucks takes over the world, they are one of the top 100 importers to the US via the largest shipping company in the US (the Danish-owned Maersk), moving coffee beans from various third world countries where agriculture is a large part of the economy. They fund and support farming cooperatives, rather like efforts of The Body Shop in developing economies, or Ben & Jerry's dairy cooperatives. They finance conservation efforts and provide disaster relief in these same coffee-growing countries. My personal Starbucks participates in community charity drives, most recently collecting for Toys for Tots this holiday season. And, when lack of health insurance is one of the largest problems in the US, Starbucks was a forerunner in providing their part time employees with comprehensive health coverage. Compared to their ongoing social and economic efforts, not getting to litter their walls with a handful of college flyers is a pretty insignificant crime to me. There may be ten Starbucks in my city, but there is still an equal number of privately owned coffeehouses available; they aren't mutually exclusive entities.

Good (not that you get stomachaches but that I'm not inadvertantly supporting some evil custard-filled plot to take over the world or something.)

There are actually some Krispy Kremes in Michigan now... there are at least 5 in the metro Detroit area (at least the last time I was there, a few months ago.)

I disagree, I like real coffee too. :) Sort of how I like real, nice burgers but sometimes a McDonalds or Burger King can be tasty.

Wait untill you've BEEN to Pelligrino's in Bourke St, Andyr, and then you can see if you've had real coffee.(Save up, and put it on your itinerary.)
Really, you can love SB as much as you like. Burger King can be tasty, but McDonalds NO. Standards, please. I feel better, Bons, knowing they aren't a totally evil food chain.
I am still worried about the fate of the Universita.(Won't you feel sorry for me if it closes down? I've been going there for twenty years!) I took my mother-in-law there and won SO many brownie points because the coffee was GOOD. And she is a woman of high standards when it comes to coffee.

A kick in the pants?  :D Seriously, though, I prefer straight espresso to French Roast. The robust coffees I like also tend to have some spicy or fruity undertones.

(Won't you feel sorry for me if it closes down? I've been going there for twenty years!)

Yes, I'll feel bad if that happens. The main advantages Starbucks will have are their marketing machine, and if they're perceived as more convenient. It's doubtful they'll have a pricing advantage. If loyal locals like you are really loyal, then they should be able to coexist, and you can sleep nights knowing the state of coffee in Australia isn't doomed. There are just more places to run to in a caffeine emergency! Yay!
