IM6 Trash Talking
« on: December 05, 2004, 11:48:27 AM »
Why no trash talking for IM6?  ???

Where's the competive spirit, people?  Or is everyone going to politely perform to the best of their abilities without a last minute desperate attempt at a psychological advantage?

I've already submitted a working entry.

So, to put some pressure on the rest; get to work!

Considering how little sleep I got last night (thanks to "The Grudge"), I might as well have entered this contest, though would have emerged as a gibbering wreck, shrieking about how a long haired monster-thingy was a hero.

I hate scary movies.  :'(

And gooo, random people who are entering!  :D

I've finished two hours early (yeh, I actually turned up on time for once). This may be considered a bad sign.

(throws in the towel)

I give up... I thought I understood how to do dialogues, but I guess I was wrong (Parsing error galore, to the point where I can't figure out what I've done wrong) I had a really cool idea, too *sniff*

I can't wait to see what everyone else came up with, it should be fun...

It appears the tragedy of the last two Iron Mod competitions has encouraged more working mods on time this time.

Yes, I actually finished  :).

(picks the towel back up)

Ok, I figured out what I was doing wrong with my parsing errors (discovered the word GOTO -shock!-)

But now does anyone know what this means?

ERROR: Unix.Unix_error(20, "stat", "groster/cre/groster.cre")

I'm assuming it means it's finding as error in one of the stat's in the cre file, but I don't know which stat #20 is...

Can't even install the bugger :) I know I won't make it to within the 5 minutes left in the competition, but now I'm just determined to get it done...

With three minutes to spare, I've submitted by entry.

It's bad.

It's very... bad, shall we say?

Yes.  Yes, "bad" would certainly describe it.

Then again, work paid me a non-zero sum to stay there, so I figured three hours of modding (even Iron Modding!) loses out to a few extra bucks in my pocket.

The ReadMe is probably not as inspired as my IM2 one, but I still think it's pretty decent.  Possibly more entertaining than themod itself, in fact.  Heh.

Ah, wait, shit, this isn't the "IM6: be all humble and self-effacing" thread.

YOU FAIL.  YOU ALL FAIL.  CONCEDE NOW AND I MIGHT LET YOU SEE MY SOON-TO-BE THIRD GLORIOUS IRON MODDER TROPHY.  REFUSE... AND YOU. WILL. REGRET IT.

I took 30 minutes to write the mod.  15 minutes to bug-test it.  12 minutes to write the readme.

I was by no means working at a feverish pace, however, what with the rigours of getting up at 0400 and working eight hours beforehand. :-\

But hey, it's all for fun, and I had fun. :D  And will have fun reading about the others, despite the total and complete lack of relevant details included (haha, Quitch).

Through an idiotic scripting error on my part, my entry does not work. So, boo-hoo.
Newt had always suspected that people who regularly used the word "community" were using it in a very specific sense that excluded him and everyone he knew.

It's not the readmes that concern me.

Can I take it that you don't write your mod out before coding, but rather write as you code?

I certainly do. It's all typing. It's not like writing and coding simultaneously somehow "dirties" the writing. Multitasking is a wonderful thing. And doing both at once facilitates, you know, actually finishing mods.

I don't recall suggesting any negative elements from this approach, and as you see it I too agree that this would be the only practical way to approach an Iron Modder contest.  Your barbs are noted however.

Well, for the full four hours I usually take the time to write out a quick .txt file to gather my thoughts, but yeah, I write the prose and code at the same time.  And for the record, I didn't think you meant any offense by your question. ;)

To my shame, however, I often do the same thing when working on actual mods.  When I test 'em out and reread the dialogue, it's not a rare sight to see me cringe at the disjointed way the conversation goes at some transition points.
