Kurtulmak's true avatar
« on: November 20, 2004, 07:47:40 AM »
I'm not sure if this was addressed here already, or if even this counts as "unfinished business", but according to a topic on SHS (http://forums.spellholdstudios.net/index.php?showtopic=12459), Kurtulmak's true avatar was cut from the final game and replaced by a Kobold Shaman.

Thanks to its high UB quotient, offhand, I'd have to say that the whole Kurtulmak sequence is the most random, "who are these people, what are they doing here and why do I care?" sequence in SOA.

The basic avatar change for Kurtulmac has its merits though, instead of putting a lich on every corner just for the heck of it.

What about the Valeria party? (And please, no one mention the load of crap introduced by Improved Battle...)

The fighters Valeria and Falahar, the cleric Pitre and the mage Dracandros are a party of hostile adventurers met in a house of the bridge district. They don't say anything and just attack you. They're worth about 8000 to 12000 xp each and have some decent loot in the early game.

Maybe I'm just wrong, but aren't they pirates, or something?  I heard they were smugglers who were doing something illegal (don't ask me what because I have no clue) and they attack you to keep it under wraps.  I also heard they had something to do with the Twisted Rune, but then again almost everything that's unexplained is always attached to the TR by loony Baldur's Gate conspiracy theorists.

I recall reading somewhere that those four thugs are the people who killed Moira if Ano took the CN path.  I think I saw this in an old David Gaider post but I realize I could be mistaken.

@Opalescence: Nope. that's just another crazy conspiracy theory trying to make the Rune responsible for everything that seems fishy in the game.

@Murdane: That's certainly not in the game though. But it's very interesting; maybe something could still be found at the Attic...

Obviously...that why I mentioned it.  I had recalled reading that that was what the original intent behind that quartet was.

For Kurtulmak (should be easy), Valeria (dunno *what* to restore, really) or both? Could do the former I guess. :)

If you are going to replace the kobold with the true avatar, what are you going to make him? A high-level kobold?

Well, these are his stats in pnp:

Kurtulmak's Avatar (Fighter 16, Priest 7)

Kurtulmak's avatar appears as a double normal-size kobold with a long, stingered tail and large horns which curve backwards from his forehead.  His skin is mottled black and gren.  His priest spells are drawn from all spheres (reversed when appropriate).

Strength: 18/30
Dexterity: 17
Constitution: 15
Intelligence: 16
Wisdom: 9
Charisma: 19

Movement Rate: 12
Size: Medium (5' 6")
Magic Resistance: 35%
Armor Class: -1
Hit Dice: 15
Hit Points: 120
Attacks Per Round: 3
THAC0: 5
Damage: 2d12 +4 (spear), 1d6 (tail)

Special Attack/Defense: The avatar's skin is very tough with scales of steel, and edged weapons below +2 enchantment are 25% likely to break when struck against it.  The avatar can smell gnomes up to a mile away, and is permanently enraged by gnomes if able to see or fight them.  In his enraged state, Kurtulmak's avatar cannot be forced to leave combat with a gnome or a group of creatures including gnomes by any means, including all magical means.  He has an aura of fear which forces enemies within 20 feet to save versus spells (-4 penalty for gnomes) or flee in panic.  His tail has a poisonous stinger, and he carries a spear +4.
The Gibberlings Three - home to the BG1 NPC Project, BG2 Tweak Pack, Divine Remix, GemRB, Lands of Intrigue, Song & Silence, and many more!

Those stats are actually pretty decent, if you remove the blurb about weapon breakage and gnomes, and maybe make the spear +3.

Keep in mind that the Kurtulmak poof thing already says something along the lines of "avatar not fully formed." So I'm not sure there ever was supposed to be the super-tough real avatar.

As long as it's more sane than the Minor Avatar of Sekolah, I wouldn't mind seeing it. I know Spellhold is supposed to be a doddle, but do we have to go as low as roadkill Kobolds and Xvarts? But I'd also like to repeat the "avatar not fully formed" statement and Kish's views on gratuitous deity fights.

I'd also like to point out that Dracandros's name literally means "Dragon-man," and therefore is just the type of screen name to have been chosen by somebody who made a lot of posts at the old BioWare forums, but wasn't too imaginative where names are concerned.
