Something I wanted to point out, that after Cyric ascended, Kelemvor won over the kingdom of the dead and became the Lord of Death. (Read Prince of Lies for the story and I think they should've left the series right there) So you can't really be the Lord of Death, possibly the Lord of Murder (if you're evil) or whatever else that Ao stuck you with (Good or Neutral)

Just my thoughts.

What happens, if you take up a portfolio that is already held by somebody? How do you beat them? Hand out goodies to have more worshippers, a bar-knuckle fight at the Planes Tavern? Or is it all cleared by Ao keeping the tab for everybody?

What if you wanted to become the new God of Bards and Barroom jokes?

Two deities can share portfolios, as long as they're different racial deities or at least one is no higher in rank than Demigod. e.g. Mystra, Corellon and Azuth all have Magic.

Kelemvor won over the kingdom of the dead and became the Lord of Death.
andyr's completely valid point aside:
to {quite deliberately :P} pick nits, he did not become the lord of Death but the lord of The Dead.

i became a god out of pure curiosity, but since one doesn't seem to have the option to invest in one's former comanions (as was marvelously suggested as a future adjustment), i expect all of my future (unadulterated) finishes (most of which will each run through an available romance; my one ascender was With viconia) will choose mortality, out of concern >and< curiosity.
the lord of murder shall perish, yadda yadda yadda.

My PC's always chose mortality, but I've loaded final saves to try godhood, just to see NPC's reactions and how the epilogues change.

I did the same. I have to say that I found the epilogues of the NPCs I romanced too sad when I ascended, so staying mortal is the best choice for me.

Never.  Becoming a god sounded like too much of a pain in the butt.  That, and I like pissing Sarevok off and listening to him whine about it.
Check it out my friend!  Bling-bling!

Not entirely true, read the fifth book in the Time of Troubles series and notice that all throughout the book that Kelemvor was continually called 'Lord Death'. While it's true, I think he focused more on the dead themselves (as he said in his promise at the end of Prince of Lies) I think death was also in his portfolio. Still, I'll agree with andyr and it could be very likely that some other god could fill in the shoes of the darker side of death.

i don't accept the bhaalspawn novel material over My-Game-Canon  :P 8) and i sure as shine-ola won't accept anything past _waterdeep_ over official FR game material, which three years ago mentioned 'death and the dead' but as of two years ago narrowed it down to 'the dead'.

To be honest: I cried very hard when I read that epilogue   :-[

(Ok, I also cried when I read the happy ones, I admit it  :) )
