Keeping Minsc and Edwin (BG1)
« on: July 31, 2004, 02:23:38 PM »
If you recruit both Minsc and Edwin BEFORE meeting Dynathingy, is there any way to keep them both?

I didn't think you were the type who'd seek out such obvious anti-RP cheese tactics.

As for your actual problem, I've no idea. :)  Kick one of them from the party before rescuing Dynaheir?

Anti-RP?  How?  You wander off, kill Dynaheir, wander back "Sorry, Minsc, we tried, but we were too late, uh and this is Gnoll blood on my hands..."

THe non-RP reason behind it is I haven't used Edwin in BG1 before, and I want to keep him.  But my party is designed around Minsc standing at the front and I can't dump him.

Well then kick Minsc for a short time at the gnoll stronghold or something.  Pretend he's guarding the stairs so no gnolls sneak up on the party from behind.  That might do it.

Save beforehand, naturally.

Doesn't work, he detects if you kill Dynaheir.  I'd leave him on another map, but last time I was away from him too long I came back to find him gone.  Killing her while she's in the party would work, but that's pretty cheap.  Looks like I'm stuck with the Minsc & Dynaheir combo again... another tool for my character to use.

I could swap Minsc for someone like Shar Tel, except I despise her... and Kivan is starting to get on my nerves with his perpetual whining about his home.  If wasn't for the fact that he's a mean shot with the Composite Long Bow I'd be teaching him a thing or two.  Until then, the less he talks the better.

Last time I played through I took Imoen, Minsc, Jaheira, Khalid and Dynaheir, just to match up with BG2.  I was hoping for something a little different... but I always take Imoen, nothing will ever seperate us.  Since then I haven't found a better front-line figher than Minsc (and it's too late to find one now, he's whining about Dynaheir, as is Edwin), and without Dynaheir you lose Minsc.  Great... ah well, at least that leaves me two new slots, one for Kivan (possibly dumping him for Coran) and one for that new girl for Tutu... I forget the name.  We'll see how she does.

Right, on with the adventure.

If you're talking about who I think you're talking about, make sure you downloaded and installed version 3.  The other two are deeply flawed.

Perhaps I misunderstanding your problem but could you not just send Dynaheir to a house and then kick her out of your party? I seem to recall that working with all the couples. It has been a long time since I played BG1.

That always made mine crash.  Besides that's almost as cheesy as killing Dynaheir while she's in party.

Almost as cheesy? I would have thought cheesier. 8) However it never made my game crash. In my defense, bioware made me do it. Notice they got rid of the couple concept in BG2.

Cybersquirt suggested poisoning her food with the ore poisons.  I'm disappointed I didn't think of that... not a bad idea at all...

How about Kagain as a fighter?

Kaigan needs boosts to both strength and dex.  I'm not going to act as his mother.  That, and I really hate his weapon specialisations.  Early on I did take him, but didn't like him... Minsc is by far the best front-liner (if a little low on the HP front).

I think the only way to have both Minsc, Dyneheir and Edwin is by taking Minsc into the party, rescusing Dyneheir and then go and talk to Edwin who I believe will join the party to keep an eye on that Rasheman witch.

Kagain is an excellent fighter because of his proficiency.  Plus he regen's.. unless Tutu changed that.  Problem with him, though, is that he's takes a high rep quite seriously - unlike bg2's Korgan, he will leave  ;)

Re: the ore contaminant (aka poison), it's how I kept Khalid and ..convinced Jaheira to leave.  It was strangley satisfying.  8)

On keeping them both, won't Dyna and Edwin eventually come to blows?

And then you can simply "nudge" the results in one direction.

Or rescue Dynah, send her naked into a room full of enemies and promptly recuit Edwin.

Notice they got rid of the couple concept in BG2.

That's always struck me as odd, really: some of the NPC romances notwithstanding, I especially think that Aerie/Minsc should be a package deal once she agrees to become his wench. Otherwise, it's just really inconsistent.
