How about Jason, Jesse, Erik or Simon? Or, to move my sucking up over to my home ground, Pete.

Heheh.  What about Alec??

As in "smart"?  ;D

Anyway, with 3 girls I never had much cause to think of boys names - probably why it's so hard for me now.  But I'm also in the standard name camp.  I like Charles, Brian, Eric, David, and Thomas.

I didn't think it proper to suggest that. However, now that you've brought it up--Alec is a nice name, don't ya think?

Uhm, my baby boy is going to have a terrifying name Sevrin. That's the last pick in my life-long quest for a "perfect" male name, lol. Prior to that I considered chronologically:

age 10 - Sergey (was in love with a national 19th century hero named thusly)
age 12 - Arthur (discovered King Arthur's cycle of tales)
age 14 - Orest (*shrugs* I think there was an artist and a Greek hero and I was pretencious)
age 15 - Igor (another national hero, this one 12th century I believe)
age 23 - Kivan (immediately vetoed by husband)
age 28 - Sandor (liked the name from GRR Martin's tale and it is actually a real name)

I've always thought that if you're going to saddle a kid with a non-standard name, you should at least make it fun. ;)

Sir - All of his life people will have to speak to him with respect.

Same as your last name (Bob Roberts, Wilson Wilson, Smith Smyth). He'll hate this, but think of the time saved when he only has to learn to spell one name?

A word or phrase that means something in a foreign language (Sukebe, Funglung, Bibliotechnica). Think of the fun he'll have if he visits the country!

A short phrase in your native language (Two-Dogs-Fighting, Onaka-ga-suiite-imasu, Wa-shihuan-peejo). He can have hours of interesting conversations with friends about his name's meaning.

A word that sounds like it means something, but doesn't (Vereth, Tidon, Pugal). Guaranteed to confuse his future teachers.

(These suggestions were meant as humor and are not to be taken seriously. No guarantee is made as to the quality of said humor. No animals were hamed in the making of these suggestions.)

I happen to like Marius. It sounds better in Danish than English, though, so be sure to get that right. :)

I've always liked the name David since it was my uncle's name. Well, I suppose it still is even if he is dead.

That makes me think of Pingu, although kids will whack him in the schoolyard :D

I actually know a guy with the name Heman. He is quite well-adjusted. I've never met the girl called Bimbo, although I'm sure she's well known among psychologists.

And congratulations (and good luck) on the baby :)

My grandpa's name was David. It is a very nice name, but it's also EVERYBODY's name. :P I like "normal" names, I just don't like "common" names. It kinda strips away your identity a little bit when you constantly meet people with your name. I dunno, I just don't like it. People are different so why call them by the same names?

Hear, hear! 5 other girls in my class of 27 were called the same as I was. And both of my grandmothers... and countless others I met... so now I overcompensate when I think of naming my own children, I am afraid.

Everyone and their brother is named Jack (well, or Madison it seems, but I'm staunchly against children named after cities even though my first crush was on a boy named Houston).

Heh... I said the same thing last night in chat.  It seems like every male child under 5 around here is named Austin or Tyler.  And naming a kid "Dallas" is just cruel.   :'(

The last time I was in Texas you couldn't swing a dead cat without hitting a Travis.   ;)

My favorite names were given by julwise:  Gabriel is currently my favorite name for a male hero.
You really can't go wrong with using the standard names for a boy:  Michael, James, Edsel

Cyn

If you're gonna use Edsel, why not Ford, Chevy, or GM. Hey, with GM, his friends could have a great time trying to guess what his initials mean.
For those in the dark, Edsel was a car produced by Ford, WAY back when.

my sons are Michael Anthony and Paul Santino.  (we are Italian) my husband wanted to give him Santino as his first name, but i was worried he would get teased. now that he is grown though, everyone thinks its a "cool" name.

Yeah, he he he. I liked your names though. I actually think Kivan is a nice name. You ought to circumvent your husband there. ;)

When I was younger I thought that Steve was the coolest name ever. Whenever I would play Barbies and stuff, the Ken doll was named Steve. I also liked the name Ashley so much that I told my entire pre-school class my name was Ashley. Sadly, that ended when there was some sort of parent teacher conference and my parents didn't know who the hell my teacher was talking about. :P There seems to be tons of Ashleys in my age group though.

For some strange reason i've always been attracted to guys with semi-unique names... Dominic, Jackson, Antoine, Noah, etc. Though I don't know if that would be an argument for or against cool names...

One day I got on the bus, and when I stepped in, I saw the most gorgeous blond Chinese girl. I sat beside her.

I said, 'Hi', And she said, 'Hi', and then I said, 'Nice day, isn't it?'.

And she said, 'I saw my analyst today and he says I have a problem.'

So I asked, 'What's the problem?'   She replied, 'I can't tell you.   I don't even know you.'

I said, 'Well, sometimes it's good to tell your problems to a perfect stranger on a bus.'

So she said, 'Well, my analyst said I'm a nymphomaniac and I only like Jewish cowboys... By the way, my name is Denise.'

I said, 'Hello, Denise. My name is Bucky Goldstein.'.
