Of course you can.  My very first character, who started in BG1 as a paladin and became an Undead Hunter in BG2, worshiped Kelemvor.  The game never asked me to input which deity he worshiped; that doesn't mean he was an atheist paladin.

From a technical point of view (=In-game engine), isn't the "paladin of Ilmater" considered as a kit? If it is so, it would be relatively easy to create a "Paladin of Arvoreen" kit/religion. Problably Tioma, from his forums, can give info on how to do that.

I think there are only two paths open that do not create contradictions or strange dialogues:

1) Make her a paladin (or a fighter/paladin) and remove all the "I wish I could be a paladin!" dialogues

2) Keep her a fighter and
 a) find another reason why she never became a paladin (tough, since Arvoreen officially sponsors paladins)
 B) edit all the dialogues to suit this change.

I am for option 1, which I think is the simpler and, if you make her a fighter/paladin, the more elegant.

But that's just my 2 copper pieces

Simpler yes, but as was mentioned before, they are trying to copy BGII over to IWD, and making Mazzy a Paladin and removing the dialogues would go against that.

Plus, if you remove the "I want to be a Paladin" part of Mazzy's story, it kinda defeats the purpose of having Mazzy as a character.

Heh, never let the rules get in the way of a good story.

I say leave her as a fighter, as she is. The mod is an engine port, not a rewrite. If people want to multiclass her to a Paladin, then they can do so. :D

There's much much much more to Mazzy than her saying, "I can't be a Paladin."

Seems a lot of people are latching onto one aspect of her only and ignoring the rest.

Well that seems like the way it will be. Simply becose its an engine port and not a mod. well... it opens for teh freest form of play though, personally i would prefer if NPC's leveled upp themself without player interaction but that doesnt seem plausible with the iwd2 engine atm :)

I think she should become a Paladin after the underdark, like via a special Quest for her much like anomens transformation into a knight. That would make alot more sense roleplay wise and still give us people who think she should be a paladin a choice to make her one.

Couldn't a modder simply add a check to see if she had a paladin level and if she did then create a global which stops the banters?

Or add an option at the beginning of the game that lets you choose: Make Mazzy Paladin, Paladin/Fighter, Fighter, or make her an Assassin of Cyric?

That last one was really interesting ! hehe!  :P
I can just imagine teh face of Mazzy when shes told to be a Worshipper of Cyric, and an Asassin at that!

When running bgtutu, the program allowed you to decide whether you wanted to give the characters kits/class changes/wizard specialization...why not just have a similar function in IWG, allowing her to either be A) Paladin, B) Fighter, or C) Fighter/Paladin?

Simple Solution... add the Paladin Prestigue class from Unearthed Arcana. That way she can start as a fighter and become a paladin without the multiclass BS.

Everyone's happy, and here's the class: https://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/ex/20040206a&page=1
