Lisa, I love it! (It's much more fun than the fairies!) The sad part from my perspective is that I actually stopped to think of what shrubbery-related (or whatnot) poem he might have been referencing. :-)

This also had the advantage of picking on everyone more or less equally (although I would have put Kelsey above Anomen myself). Encore, encore!

By the way, would you be willing to tell us a little about your artistic process? Are these digitally-created images? Colored-pencil work that is scanned and then converted to mechanical shading? Spontaneous generation at its finest? :-)

I have taken a temporary hiatus from (over-)analyzing things here, so I will merely say that this is a lovely article (thanks for the pointer!) that addresses some important issues while seemingly remaining stuck unawares in a mire of heterosexuality. "I think that the sexual love between a man and a woman is the most powerful force in the universe," she says. I'll leave that with a quote from Sappho that could be construed as suggestively on-topic: "The moon has set, and the Pleiades; it is midnight, the time is going by and I recline alone."

 *peers at artical* People are getting all shocked over adultry and masturbation in a romance novel? Yeah, masturbation isn't a keen topic and all but hissy fits over adultry? (No, you guys aren't hissy fitting but the publishers are?) What was the Bridges of Madison County about? Or did this fly over my head because of various (social/mental/chronological) reasons ? *le sigh* People.

As for the picture...   Made me smile quite a bit! It looks like Jonte-sama drew the picture might of inked it (?) and used a image program to color it. That's what I used to do before I broke my scanner. But now I got a stylus and all is right with the world. ^_^

And Amone and Kelsey look so cute together!

*hides from Jason-sama!!* :D

                   Yes! It is fun!

As for seeing another... not for awhile I'm afraid.  I'll be sitting up tonight doing layouts for the final pages of my current Jayne story A'Soulin, and the layouts for all of her next adventure Between the Dark and the Dawn.  Also, I think I finally have the right script plan in mind for the mini I'll need to put together for APE.  Much to do, much to do.  (Too much to do!)

This lil cartoon was half done and I managed to finish it today because I was unexpectedly at loose ends.  :)

Well, lessee... This particular piece was drawn in pencil, transferred via graphite paper to bristol board, inked with technical pens, scanned, then cleaned up, colored and lettered in the computer.  Unfortunately, I just don't have the room to work in real paints these days.

I suspect it's because some publishers still yearn for the days of Harlequin's "poor girl meets man, man falls in love with girl, takes girl away to live happily and richly ever after" and the scene ends at the bedroom door. (Ok, so they were all over my house growing up, my grandmother loved them :P )

The bodice rippers *are* a lot more explicit than they used to be, but masturbation is one topic that I've rarely seen in them. I read them for research, I tell you, research! (yeah, they'll believe that one.. LOL!) Come to think on it, it's usually the "bad woman" who is an enemy of the heroine who is the one who commits adultery, not the heroine and her hero :)

I know.  Blame it on the particular genre and be glad there is at least some progress.  Unfortunately, there is a very strict set of guidelines that most romance editors are (hide)bound to.  There was a time when these things were rarely ever more than 200 pages of boredom finsihed off with an alluded-to missionary-position interlude in the marriage bed.  *snore*

No TBoMC was a mass market kind of novel rather than a "Romance" novel.  It was marketed differenntly and to (more or less) a differnent audience.

And you are exactly right about how I made the pic.   :)

Not at all :) I posted about him over on the FWP boards under Mod Ideas. He's still very much in the early stages, but I have a good idea where I'm going with him.

Nah, no need to cover the eyes, I doubt anything Lisa inspires me to write tonight with that drawing of hers will make it into the real dialogs..LOL! Well...not much of it anyways ;)

Let's face it, some heroic guy sweeping an ordinary woman off her feet is a lot closer to most women's fantasies than masturbation. And while plenty of women commit adultery, no little girl sits around thinking, "Gee, I'd really like Homewrecker Barbie for Christmas."

Absolutely.  And not necessarily heroic, but just.... something. Dashing, charismatic, brooding, sweet, even blind to the fact that the heroine is madly in love with him and many other quirks of persona, there's always something in the hero that draws a woman to him, even if she won't admit it to herself at first.  I can remember reading some where I wondered to myself what the devil she sees in this guy, till about halfway or so through the book ;) In any event, as long as he sweeps her off her feet in the end, I'm a happy camper!

Tsuru dear, you need to stop reading bodice rippers. They'll just rot your mental teeth. Read Possession by A.S. Byatt, a good old-fashioned literary mystery/romance about Victorian poets and modern-day scholars (complete with dark little fairy tales, passable Emily Dickinson ripoffs, and not-overly-interesting blank verse), Corelli's Mandolin by Louis de Bernieres, Crossing to Safety by Wallace Stegner.

Kiki, sweetie, what else would one read in a nice bubblebath? ;) After dealing with the partisan-bashing-political-addicts all day, I *need* mindless fluff, believe me! LOL!

The books I *buy* are very different genres, believe me. I tend to drive himself nuts with books in various states of being read all over the house.  He even built me a bookshelf over the sofa in an attempt to collect them all in one place (Notice I said *attempt* (snirk).

I have the same book-clutter problem in my house. I've run out of bookshelf space and have tried to institute a no-net-gain book policy, but I'm failing miserably. This weekend I was looking through one of those home remodeling books and saw a photo of my fantasy room: sunlight streaming in through giant windows, floor-to-ceiling bookcases, and the only furniture was a big comfy chair. Sigh.

No, I've yet to see any mention of heaving bosoms or inadvertent glimpses of muscular chests in your Morgan lovetalks, thankfully. :)

What kind of work do you do where you're driven to bodice rippers?

Oh that sounds like heaven! My problem is I just cannot resist certain books, like the newest Anne Rice, and there goes more bookshelf space (sigh) Not to mention my obsession with getting all my videos on DVD ;) Oh dear, I wonder if I can hide yet another box from him when it arrives...LOL!

We have bookshelves overflowing in every room of this teeny abode.  We have books in storage on the porch and in the shed just waiting for the day when we have a bigger house so we can bring them out again.  We have more books than anything else and are continually bringing in more.  What can I say?  It's love.

I humbly concede to both Lisa and Tsuru. A few bookshelves, a messy heap in the bedroom, and an untidy pile in the garage cannot even begin to compete with the state of your dwellings.

For me, this is a very tiny amount of animals. At one point when I lived in Maryland I had 3 dogs, 3 cats, 30 or so guinea pigs (I bred them and then couldn't bear to sell them ok?), hamsters, two parakeets, a chinchilla and a bratty cockatiel. Just call me Noah :)

Congratulations to the WWs for hijacking yet another thread. Sigh.

Threads exist to be hijacked. It's not like there's so much discussion going on here that we really need strict adherence to thread titles in order to keep things sane.

Anyone who has been around this particular block a few times knows that any thread with more than 20 replies that is not entitled "Valen Romance?" is necessarily off-topic. :-)

By the way, what does WW stand for in this context? Normally I know what it means, but when I use it it's never plural. :-)

By the way (part 2!), look for a Lisa-Kiki collab dialogue in the next Sola release ... as soon as I figure out how to reword it to avoid the phrase "rather flimsy excuse to be close to you". :-)

By the way (part 3!), I'm thinking of gathering up a copy of Lisa's image and fanfic, Domi et al.'s Turnips and Jason's Cloakwood squares and making a little page containing all extend Solaufien "fandom". Does anyone object strenuously? Attribution will be retained, yada yada.  Are there any works that I'm missing?

Wes: Yes, "fandom" page sounds like a good idea. While we're talking, what about breaking that gallery out somewhere else? It's always struck me funny that clicking any of the other portrait links takes you to the page/DL section, but for Solaufein you get the gallery.

Yes, a large portion of my childhood was in Arizona (mostly Phoenix.)  And yes, God help me, I remember Wallace and Ladmo.  I was even on the show once.  *groan*

Imoen thinks he was definitely making moves on the PC, and she's a more objective observer than Solaufein. Also, I don't think the dialogue works very well if he doesn't admit that he was already sweet on the PC. But if you want to continue his denial of the blatantly obvious, that's certainly your choice. :)

Imoen in Jonte's story? Imoen in Jason's Kelsey mod? Imoen in the Sola mod?

At any rate, Sola is certainly "sweet on the PC" at that point, but the conversation was not a "cheap ploy" to hold holds, nor was hand-holding an "ulterior motive" (in the sense of "this is my real motive: notice that it was hidden behind this facade"). It was more like: "We're having the conversation anyway and it is important. But soft! I can seize this opportunity to both prove a point and make myself happier. Sounds like a plan." He's glad that it worked out that way (unless you cut his hand off) but it wasn't his primary motive.

Meanwhile, back at the ranch ...

Sphira also sent in some dialogue, and that will probably make an appearance as well.

Imoen in the Sola mod, of course. She notes that aside from brooding and casting Stoneskin, Solaufein's main activity is hitting on the PC. Not that there's anything wrong with that. It *is* technically a romance mod.

Will dismemberment be a new dialogue option? :)

Sigh. OK, how about:

Considering your origins, I was interested in what you had to say,
but I admit I also used it as a way to be close to you, to
touch your hand. Do you remember?

As shallow as this sounds, a girl--or at least this girl--would be more flattered if it had been merely a cheap ploy. Sure, you want someone to be attracted to your mind and character, and Sola probably is at this point or he wouldn't keep cornering you, but physical attraction certainly counts for something.

Sounds like a plan."

Ok, so it was an added bonus.

"Golly, I sure was so hoping for some stimulating conversation today.  And hey!  This here seems to be a chance for me to percolate my brain and my hormones!  Cool!"

Anything by Bertrice Small or Stephanie Laurens. Small's Skye O'Malley series is fascinating and covers sooo many years, which is just how I love it. I hate not knowing what happens to everyone :) And Laurens Bar Cynster are to die for.

And every review of Devil's Bride mentions the word "plucky" wrt the heroine. To wit:

The larger-than-life hero is bold, brave, daring, and determined and meets his perfect match in the heroine, who is plucky, intelligent, practical, and wise.

NO BODICE RIPPERS!

Ach, which one? I don't think either Small or Laurens are like any of those myself.

Have you ever read Alice Borchardt's werewolf series? Seems she took them when her sister Anne took the vamps. And did it very well too.

She's ... different. Set in ancient Rome, and a little difficult to get into at first, but fascinating.  Her latest is a retelling of Camelot from Guenevere's perspective and it's definitely different. One of her wolves appears in it.  How about an ollllld favorite, "Forever Amber"? :)

I haven't read them in years but there are some books by Diana L. Paxon that are retellings of classic stories like...

The White Raven (retelling of Tristan and Isolde)
Out of print but can be bought used here (http://www.alibris.com/search/detail.cfm?chunk=25&qauth=diana%20l%2E%20paxon&S=R&bid=7293791965&pqtynew=&page=1&matches=16&qsort=r)

and

The Serpant's Tooth (retelling of King Lear)  It's also out of print but you can probably find it (both) at a used book store.

Both books contain sex but neither is a bodice ripper by any means.

1. what is a "chicka"

A misspelling of the Spanish word for girl, "chica," or perhaps a bastardization of chica and chick (slang for girl). Or so I assume.

Quote
2. what is a "bodice ripper"
A trashy romance novel. The covers usually feature a buxom woman with her breasts falling out of her torn dress as she swoons in the arms of a heavily muscled man whose shirt is also inexplicably ripped.

Quote
3. what is "spanking"
You know, hitting someone on the butt. With kids, it's a punishment, with adults, it's usually implies a different sort of naughtiness.

Quote
4. what is "neck chomping"
Biting someone on the neck. If you're not Bodhi (or even if you are), it also has naughty implications.

Mists of Avalon ... now *there* was a good book. Well-written *and* original. I love it when authors put a new spin on an old tale.

Diana Paxon? I think I read a short story by her once. Does she write fantasy?

I will modify my request for suggestions on good books to something that will keep me up all night reading. Bonus points if it has a good romance in it, but it does not need to be (and probably shouldn't be) the main focus. Recent reads that meet my criteria include The Blind Assassin by Margaret Atwood, the Song of Fire & Ice books by George R.R. Martin, and Herodotus's Histories.

"The Gormenghast trilogy by Mervyn Peake... I love those books, but have rarely found anyone who's read them or even heard of them (sigh)"

ive read part of them, but found gene wolfe's shadow of the torturer series much more to my taste.....

actually about that time in my life, i found i dont like most fantasy, after tolken spoiled me completely, and aside from the mercedes lackey books, and david eddings, i stick to straight hard science fiction...

Hmph, our minds aren't *always* in the gutter. Just most of the time ;)

I also adore Tolkein. I cannot count how many times I read The Hobbit and the LOTR on those long boring schoolbus rides in high school before I got my license and drove myself. Course even my car was often full of books then. I'm already plotting when to give my little neice and nephews their first copy of the Hobbit. I am going to foil their parents yet ;)

Have you ever read The Gray Lenseman series? That one surprised me, I thought I wouldn't like it, but I did.

Melanie Rawn has a couple good series'. Dragon Prince almost looks like a bodice ripper on the cover...but it's not really. Plus definate perk...lotsa dragons. Also her as-yet-incomplete Exiles trilogy is very good. Even better-all her covers (so far) have been done by Michael Whelan, one of my favorite fantasy artists. Louis L'Amour's westerns are ALL closet romances, and The Sacketts series is pretty okay. There's also Jordan's megalithic saga, The Eye of the World. C.S. Friedman's Coldfire trilogy is great, all kinds of nifty dichotomies (did I use that word right?). Weiss and Hickman's Deathgate Cycle is pretty good. Elizabeth A. Lynn's Chronicles of Torner is an okay trilogy filled with romancey stuff, although I think she  carried the homosexuality torch a tad too far. Janny Wurts has some spiffy books as well, and she does her own cover art. Michael Moorcock's Elric saga is strange, but entertaining. Whew. That's all I can think of right now. All these titles would keep me busy for a month or so, heheh.

Whelan is the guy who did this picture. It's the cover of the first book in the Exiles series, The Ruins of Ambrai.

As much as I adore Weis/Hickman (I'm a Krynn transplant), I have never read the Deathgate Cycle.  I'm still mad at them for what they did in that last Krynn second generation series (I should own stock in Kleenex ... sigh) I guess I should give it a try though.

"Chicka" just reminds me toujours of Aerie "faster than Chicktikka fastpaws", so I thought it had something to do with that... well it´s a BIT similar, right?
(I did not understand Aeries babbling acustically for a long, time until I discovered the sub-title-option).

Sadly I had not much time to follow the boards this week, in addition our ISP broke down for two days. Anyway, happy weekend to you all!

@Lisa: Pls continue your fanfic!! Nice capture of "motherly" Jaheira!
May I just remark that you build up a sort of "tension" between Rhiann and Soula, which I think is missing in the dialogues of the mod... (yep, I had to bring this up again...)
And a question: Wouldn´t it historically more correct that Immy+Kelsey came together after Rhiann and Soula? Unless, of course, JC would transport Immy-Kelsey into SoA....

I'm a female, what can I say. When my favorite characters are killed off, I tend to scream and/or cry, both of which send the male in this household running for the Kleenex :) That or he reaches for the Valium for himself...LOL!

BTW, isn´t there a possibilty to "switch" dialogues according to sex? I noticed that some npcs (i.e. daughter/son of the Firkraak-victim) switch according to sex of charname.

Besides, most part of x-rated dialogue wouldn´t needed to be rewritten ("Ohhh..." - "Yeesss" - "Give it all, yes" - ...)

Re: estrogen. You haven't experienced too much estrogen until you live or work in an all-women environment. Yech.

Re: books. I think SF is most interesting when it's used to explore social issues. I read a collection of short stories by Greg Egan about a year ago, Luminous or something like that, that I thought did a pretty good job of that, although it wasn't the most exciting thing I've ever read. Ender's Game and Speaker for the Dead are my favorites in this category, though I don't think they qualify as hard-core SF.

David Eddings. While I won't be so unkind as one of my friends, who says that he's the only person who's been able to write a short story in five books, I don't think he's the best thing out there. The original Belgariad was OK, everything else since (or at least the little that I've sampled) are just recycled junk. Worst of all, he's recycling his own stuff. At least steal from somebody else.

Robert Heinlein. I heard somewhere that he and L. Ron Hubbard decided to see who could spawn a more popular religion, so Heinlein wrote Stranger in a Strange Land and Hubbard wrote Dianetics. Hubbard won that one hands-down.

Books

Since I don't want to "overanalyze" things, I'll make it short and sweet:

IF you are reading Robert Jordan or David Eddings THEN put it down and pick up George R. R. Martin or C. S. Friedman or The Deed of Paksenarrion. Life is short.

IF you want SF that explores social issues AND you have free time THEN pick up Peter Hamilton's Reality Disfunction Series.

IF you just want stellar SF THEN pick up A Fire Upon the Deep and A Deepness In The Sky. Hey, those fans can't all be wrong.

IF you want SF meets Romance but with plot, characterization and subtly-handled gender issues THEN pick up Bujold's Vorkosigan books.

IF you like Stephen R. Donaldson BUT you thought Covenant was a mite too whiney OR you find his prose a bit too obscure THEN pick up his The Man Who Fought Alone which is actually a fairly gripping film noir detective story (!?).

Finally ... IF you have ideas about failure recovery, transparent recovery, checkingpointing, transactions, programming language support for run-time cehcks, event-driven programming or fault-tolerance THEN email them to me.

Anyway, I'm off to see the wizard.

I think they might be. The dog pack idea was pretty cool, although my own experience with dogs indicates that a dog's intelligence level (not to mention his/her ability to hear or understand human commands) tends to be inversely proportional to the number of other dogs present. Other than that ... eh. The "love" story in A Fire Upon the Deep was particularly lame. For someone from a matriarchal society, the chick was remarkably wimpy.

I am reminded of this description of the SF/Fantasy book recommendations
at www.alexlit.com: It asks you for your ratings of all of the books and
short stories in its internal listings, keeping careful track of the
difference between "have read it and didn't like it" and "haven't read
it", incrementally determining your position within an ever-shifting web
of preference clusters, and then recommends Lois McMaster Bujold.

Somewhere around the second or third book things really start to heat up. Miles is just engrossing somehow.

Anyway, I've incorporated the K-L dialogue (fairly easy) and the Sphira dialogue (*much* harder). More news in a bit.

Strange Girl et al., that would rather be. Though 'twas Domi who got Sola the job. In fact I am afraid I am becoming obsessed with Sola... I wrote an angry outcry! I even wrote a parody... WW, you should do * something * about that undead scene! I am still steaming a months' and a half later. That's not healthy! Here, just see that:

The scene: 1 day after Sime joins, in the nighttime, anywhere, three vampires teleport by your group. Sol and Solauf (males), Sola (female)

Sime:

What? I can barely recognize you. Now I can see that it is true that Bodhi turns anyone unfortunate enough to her service. Evil assassins you were in life and evil beasts you became in undeath. I do not know whether to loathe or pity you.

Sol:

Oh, beautiful daughter of Aran Linvail! Never you spared a tender word for me in life. I praise my order to deliver you to the Mistress. I was promised that in undeath you shall be mine, Sime Linvail.

Sola:

Love him, Sime... His bite is deadly and sweet as almonds. Nothing is more tender than death...

Solauf:

Bodhi gives power, true power to those who serve her. Your father is doomed. Come with us, Sime. Join us in undeath... And bring the Bhaalchild along.

We will have beds of fleeting odors,
Couches deep as memorials,
And strange flowers on the stairs
To blossom for us under skies more beautiful.

Sola:

Following each other 'til the last warmth came,
From our two hearts, two vast torches will pour
The reflection of their double flames
On our two spirits, these twin mirrors.

Sol:

One evening made of pink and mystical blue,
We will exchange a single flash from afar,
Like a long sob, charged with adieux;

This evening is tonight, my dear Sime... Accept the death from me and we shall live forever, powerful and passionate.

Sime:

I did not forget the last lines as you did. They are:

And later a Solar, the gates ajar,
Will joyously restore to life the ores,
The dead flames and the tarnished mirrors

No restoration will you find and never will your spirit know rest after you have been destroyed. You say you are powerful? That we shall see! For the glory of life and light I shall strike you down!

HA! The Weimer dude even recommended C.S. Friedman! I find myself continually using the cover pic from Black Sun Rising as my picture for BG2. The Coldfire trilogy has been one of my favorites for a long time. George R. R. Martin's Song of Fire and Ice is also excellent, and scored quite a few more points than Jordan's saga on my personal scale. As far as I know there are only 3 books out so far...did I miss one? I shall engulf my town's library in flames of dire aggravation if it's out and they don't have it. Also worth mentioning, despite several forum member's apparant aversion to Salvatore, is his Demon Wars saga. In my opinion, Elbryan is much better personified than Drizzt, not quite as one-dimensional as Drizzt in the earlier novels. Salvatore's writing has matured since the Icewind Dale trilogy, however, so the later books are better written all together. Anyways... I'm in the midst of my first reading of the Drizzt trilogy. Does your appraisal mean I should continue after it? And what about the Elminster books? :)

Tsuru, my wife is hard at work beating the testosterone out of me, that and I don't think reading and books are neccesarily testosterone oriented. As to the Drizzt books, well, as I said, his style DOES mature in the later novels, giving Drizzt considerably more depth as a character. The earlier novels, especially the Icewind Dale trilogy, left me with the impression that Drizzt was nothing more than an occasionally wrathful warrior. No depth, no real characterization. The only insights into him come from his soliloquies (sp?) at the beginning of the chapters. While these do a decent job, I didn't feel they were quite enough. However, I leave the final judgement to you. If you are abyssmally disgusted with the books, don't read them because I told you too. As for Elminster...I've never read any of them, so I don't know. My tastes are far too ecclectic to read a book because it's in the same setting as another I liked. That, and I never got around to it really. If I read any of them, I'll be sure to let you know what I think.

In my humble, Drizzt's best was the Dark Elf Trilogy, both in style and in depth (if I might use those words at all to describe Salvatore). After that his books became a sequence of Drizzt's going into sidelong rolls and looking in the eyes of doomed creatures before they were dead and "dear diary, the world is a cold place for a valiant, incredible Mary-Sue Do'Urden, but everything is fixable with the insights of dear Miss Cheese"

It is amazing how the less popoular Clerical Quintet is better than Drizzt's series.

Martin is simply awsome, but I hesitate to call him fanatsy per se, it's so realistic and lifelike. It tricks you into beleiveing that there is no smoke and mirrows....

The Elminster books are excellent IMO.  After all the author Ed Greenwood created the Realms.  :)  The very last book, Elminster in Hell, is amazing.  He departs from the traditional style of writing to give glimpses into El's mind as he's trapped in one level of the 9 Hells being tortured and pursued by Demon Lords bent on capturing the spellfire of Mystra that he holds.  Most of it is written through dreams, thoughts, etc.  I recommend it.  It takes place during the Time of Troubles when a rift in the Weave caused by an errant spell rips open a door to Hell.  The only way to keep the demons from escaping was to enter and shut it himself.  Hence the story begins.

I know El is not for everyone because he IS the ultimate Mary-sue character in most peoples eyes.  But in many ways... wasn't King Arthur and Merlin just 2 such characters that are pretty much universally loved?  Maybe it's just me...  :P

Anyway Domi is very right.  The Cleric Quintet is by far the best Salvatore books so far *hands down*.  Go get them!  :D

Err yeah.. and I'm a huge Drizzt fan.  Read them all a dozen times each at at least.  :P  I find the Dark Elf Trilogy the best.  :D

                   Me? Meeeee!  :o

For my next run through BG2 I will play male again. Feeling better by wearing at least partly a "familiar skin". I have trouble deciding which romance. Imoen and Kelsey are both really really good, but I feel they are just made for each other! So what for me? Ah, I mean, what for my pc?  ;)

Viccy was ok, but already played twice. Aerie/Jaheira nope. Who was this Ranger/Cleric madam? That could be a choice next...

Well, if you take Mary Stuart's Merlin he is definetly not a Mary Sue. And I do not know if he evere was, since he is rather shadowy and scary figure.  Arthur had his flaws as well (bedding his own sister and sending babes under the knife among them). Nay, dark side is there, though overshadowed by the brilliance of a non-existant pure white stead and a shiny sword.  :D

Sime. But I have not heard from our romance writer for a while, so au present we are working on her character development only (quest, banters fling with Haer and a romance with Coran)

Elminster himself is dark at times and flawed as well.  After all, he was an accomplished roof crawling thief and a brigand before becoming a mage.  :D  You'd have to read the books really to see.  :)

There's such a filthy comment I could make over the term "Beating the testosterone out of me"........

But i'll leave it unsaid.

I must say I'm always male when I play BG2 but hey the more mods the merrier, I don't care if they add more male romances or not. I mean I still use Kelsey and Solaufien, though addmitedly with Sola you run a fine line as you want the Moonblade, but you don't really want your elf (or whatever) heading down the "road less travelled" if you will.

You want a scary Merlin, you should read Alice Borchardt's "The Dragon Queen". When I realized where she was going with him, I was almost in shock. But I still can't wait for the next book in the series :)

I'd like to say I'm thinking of making an NPC but I need to write out all her stuff first before pimpin' my wares off to more techonologly advanced types. The idea's going to be a Wizard Slayer and she's Lawful Good (I don't care was the 'We Want More Evil NPCs' say, the best (stat-wise) fighter in the game is Korgan, the best wizard is Edwin, and the best Cleric is Viccy; who are all evil). She's got a plot and a few ideas I want to try and I wouldn't mind making her romanceable. She's independent and hardly clingy and her personality makes it so she wouldn't cat fight with the female NPCs over the PC's affections. Nor (the NPC idea I have) is also kind. But here's the kicker...

She's half orc. :D

Hmm? It should be very easy. Just tell Sola to back off as soon as he starts talking to you. You'll skip all the dialogues but you will get the two fights and the sword.

Or do you mean that it's tough to "end the romance" just before things "go too far"? Jason had that problem as well. :-)

IMHO. Only IMHO.

The bigest attraction for me was absence of Cattie Brie.

I found CQ less monotonous than Drizzt. Cadderly seem to have some sort of doubts and even(!!!) had pangs of jelousy and by some odd chance actually cares for sleeping with a woman. Refreshing, lol.

The character set was more interesting than in Drizzt's series (Newander, Elbereth, Shayley, Vander, Danica and Cadderly himself are more inteersting to me than the DoUrden-son's company) and villans are better defined, than boring Entereri (Abbalister, Ghost). There were more sense/logic to what is done in the books. There is less repetions of the same words and same scenes throught the book.

Crimsion shadow is entertaining enough but I could not finish the series 'cause it became boring

He improved a little bit with Cryptonomicon. His style and his vision of the future are so dead on, though, that it makes the pain of a completely disjointed ending worthwhile.

Ack! Not my taste, sorry, since I generally do not like half-orcs. I am more on the line of Tolkien: Orcs are perverted Elves, the expression of eevil. And talk about copulating with apes... Ack!
Hee. I'm expecting that reaction, too. ^_^ It's my protest to the world about how half-orcs are given bad raps.
Half elves are given a chance: You can be netural and see in the dark and get all the chicks/dudes you want cuz you're pretty!

Half orcs: You're piss ugly, stupid as crap, and more than likely you're going to be evil and devoid of any background, personality, or wit. But you can smash stuff.

That's just unfair. :( If drows can be 'good' so can half orcs.

They do not have to be stupid or ass ugly.  Neither do they have to be evil.

On what else would most people focus?  As a wise man noted: "The battle is not always to the strong nor the race to the swift...but that's the way to bet."  It's also safe to bet that any one half-orc will be uglier, dumber and more inclined to Evil than an average human because that's what, on average, they are.  This isn't to say you shouldn't have fun with one that goes against type; that's what makes inspired characters.  But, as the author, you should be aware that this is what you are doing (even though your NPC may start with no such insight) and plan to deal with it.

                   Er-hem.

According to the 3E D&D Player's Handbook (the one which applies, since 2E AD&D has no half-orcs), half-orcs inherit a tendency toward chaos from their orc sides, but are no more or less likely to be evil than humans.

And as far as uglier...well, D&D half-orcs have a Charisma penalty that reflects that, but BG2 half-orcs don't.

Dumber is true, though.

If I were actually arguing the case in court, I would maintain that 3e rules logically cannot apply retroactively to a 2e game.  If half-orcs aren't covered in 2e, then they don't exist in a 2e game.  Since they do, however, exist, the operative precedent would be the 1e rules in which the status is as I described.

That would be very silly though.  More sensible, I think, to accept the cliched view that since orcs are ugly, dumb and nasty, the majority of their half-breed children would tend in these directions as well.  Otherwise, an attractive, sensible, kindly half-orc wouldn't have any bias to role-play against.

So if the rules are irrelelvant, then there's nothing but the story background to consider for a Good half-orc.  My thought is that such an NPC would be most interesting to play if she had to contend with a good deal of bias; and, moreover, a bias that is substantially justified by human experience with half-orcs.  Without the half-orc stigma the character might as well be a gnome or dwarf.

Sorcerers and Monks are both covered under 2nd edition rules, just in some of those oddball source books that got rather difficult to find once Wizards of the Coast took over for TSR. And from what I've heard they were rather unbalanced at mid-levels, and game-shattering at higher levels. Sorcerers were also covered if I recall, also in a source book. But most people only use the core books anyhow, as getting any is unfair to players unless you get them all, and that gets expensive. I was a member of an online RPG service (that apparently died quietly some time ago) and most members only allowed core rules, and even discriminated against half-orcs. Personally, I enjoy playing strange races/classes to roleplay from a new perspective, and just to try something new. If Salvatore can make a Drow better known than Elminster, there's got to be something there...

Ack!  Rules quoting!  *And Lisa's eyes glaze over*

Look, what matters to me is story, not whatever rules TSR has embraced this week.  Besides, if TSR (or WoTC or Hasbro) can throw out whatever current rules in favor of an interesting novel, I can certainly do the same for an interesting NPC.

The half-orc of which I speak is not specifically attractive, but he is not ugly as a mud fence either.  He is obviously of mixed orcish decent and must deal with the prejudices that generates.  He is also lawful good.

not too intelligent, high con and str....equipp with gloves of dexterity.....

perfect sorc material!!!!

sorcs unlike mages do not need high int.....

dex and con are even more important, so is wisdom...potions for that...str is not that important in mage classes, but they are important in carrying around the loot...but a half orc with gloves of dex would make a excellent sorc...hehehehhehhe

On the subject of inheritent evil: Drow are not inherently evil, they are corrupted by education system and society.
Half-races: sighs dreamily *that mysterious Dwelven complex adventures...that wonderous Dwelven NPC...I was thinking about* No, ther is no real reason why half-orc cannot be good and sweet. Ah, a nurture-over-nature adherent. How do good drow stay good, then, in the face of their society's pressures to be evil? Was the pressure unevenly applied to them?

I'll say this about Cameron and other Good half-orc twinkles in people's eyes: I'd be interested to hear how they managed to retain their resilience and (maybe) faith in people's goodness in the face of relentless prejudice. Strong family upbringing, personal communications with the Goddess of Vowels (or whoever the half-orc equivalent of E might be), or some other external force?

 That wouldn't be a horrid idea! (I might be speaking DnD blasmpathy but it doesn't make sense that an average intellgent race doesn't atempt to become more stable wether for good or bad reasons.)

Nor's proably going to be a wizard slayer snice half orcs can't use magic so she was sent to live and train in.... however you spell the city of coin. However the only residence that would take her in were priests of Ilmater so she worships a human god.

Every story has been told countless times before; it's the manner of the telling that counts. Human nature hasn't changed. Motivations are the same, we react the same way to certain stimuli, there will always be an "us vs. them" mentality, etc.

This feels suspiciously like a reprise of my earlier nurture vs. nature comment. I'll stop now.

If I have a credo left that would be that a person should be judged individually not en masse. Hence - I do not believ in the inherintly evil/drunken/good/noble  races or nations.

Every society have deviants, which swing both ways. Rather mild society can produce both a maniac who kills and rapes children and a person who goes to a forsaken place to heal and to feed less fortunate.

As unsustainable, lame and primitive as Drow society is pictured by FR, the only thing that is actually credible is its drizzts, valaces, zaknafeins, solaufeins and viconias - the deviants.

So many of those little "in-jokes" were so perfect. The ballroom dance thing, the cereal, PGP, MTG, etc. My only complaint with the book was that it was much too visceral in places. And you have experience as a different type of reader to back this up ...? :) No, definitely if I were a CS type, I would have appreciated the book more. As a mere policy hack with just one programmer/D&D/fantasy/anime/geek RL pal these days, I still got enough of the jokes to keep me in the loop. Unlike a lot of hard SF, where I just have to work too damn hard to figure out what's going on.

The book could have used some pruning, for sure, but he got to some emotional depths that he hadn't found before.

By the way, if anyone is counting on Cryptonomicon to avoid getting a speeding ticket, Stephenson's info about the location of the speed trap on I-90 was already out of date at the time of publication. Tsk.

Ah, yes. Lisa and I had a conversation where I said that the "take my hand" dialogue gave me a shiver up the spine, and she agreed enthusiastically. You know, that little tingle up your back when you realize that someone you're attracted to returns your interest. Well, I guess for me it's more in my solar plexus up through my lungs, but that just makes it sound like I've got heartburn. Entirely a different feeling.

Goop refers to the syrupy romantic stuff that I have unfortunately been socially programmed to crave. I can resist the cheesy, predictable, and/or blatant appeals to my feminine sensibilities (e.g., bodice rippers, ugh (sorry, Tsuru)), but I cannot deny that underneath this ferociously practical exterior is a sap who cries at good sad movies. (SolaPragma=3, SolaRemorse=3--not bad as a cheap psychological assessment.)

So ...  as an example, let us look at a passage from Possession (I'm going to get at least one of you to read this book, dammit). Look, it's even one about hand-holding:

I shall see you--as you were the moment before the madness--until the day I die. Your little face, with its pale candour, turned to me--and your hand out--in the watery sunshine, between the great trees. And I could have taken your hand--or not taken your hand--could I not? Either? But now only the one. Never have I felt such a concentration of my whole Being--on one object, in one place, at one time--a blessed eternity of momentariness that went on forever, it seemed. I felt you call me, though your voice said something different, something about the rainbow spectrum--but the whole of you, the depth of you called to me and I had to answer--and not with words--this wordless call. Now is this only my madness? With you in my arms (I tremble as I remember it to write it) I was sure it was not.

Heat thing up a notch?  I'm hoping for much more than a kiss, no matter the passion involved!  In fact, I was hoping for a bit of smut!

You yourself said that writing "warmer" prose is not your forte.  So, heating things up a notch would take them to the passionate kiss stage, not the bump-n-grind stage.
Would it have helped if I'd put a smiley after my sentence?   I was just teasing. And yes, I probably would have a hard time getting Solaufein and the PC into even the passionate kiss stage.

Oh, don't worry about the bodice ripper thing, I get tired of them myself at times, and go in search of other things to read. I just think they have their place and it's as pure fluff when I really don't want to think.

I think I'll go back to vegging out now. I hate colds..bleh.

Ya know, it's fun picking on you, Jonte. Not quite as much fun as picking on my wife, perhaps, but that's just 'cuz you can't throw things at me. Oh well. It's all good fun however, and if you decide that you just must take me seriously, well, your loss, because I don't! So  :P  to everyone!

When you were in Maryland, did you ever see Rob Somebodyorother and his Defending the Caveman one-man show in DC? His theory was that modern men had retained the hunter instinct, so they were relentlessly focused on stalking the perfect prey (hence the fondness for the remote control), and modern women had kept the gatherer instinct so they were constantly being distracted by items of potential interest (which has now evolved into the shopping instinct).

That sounds vaguely familiar, but I can't really place it. That's a theory I keep hearing all over the place though. I really don't know if I agree with it, because I have known many exceptions to that particular "rule". It goes right along with the one about the female looking for the perfect provider male to strengthen the gene pool.

And believe it or not, I hate shopping! I usually know just what I want, go get it and get out. Even better, I shop online. As for the remote, himself shares it rather nicely. It's the "heater wars" that are big in this household. Dratted desert rats ;)

Perhaps your gatherer instinct has manifested as a bounce-from-topic-to-topic habit? :)

Anyway, it's all about general tendencies of entire populations, not individual behavior. I would not say that I or any of my friends have made marital or dating choices in search of the perfect provider (or the perfect baby factory, as the case may be), but then, I think we're out of touch with many aspects of mainstream American society. For example, based on the people I know, I have no idea where certain recent political poll results come from.

Back to evolution. The Red Queen by Matt Ridley is all about how evolution has driven human behavior. Includes a theory on why human beings are the exception to the flashy male/drab female rule.

Political polls? From my insane obsessed chatters probably. I hear more polls and what I think are made up polls every day than I really want to, and they scare me, quite frankly.

I think I've heard of The Red Queen, we tend to watch a lot of shows on evolution among other things, just because it interests both of us. There are times cable really does have good shows on. I'll have to put it on my ever-growing list.

If my seven-year-old recollection can be trusted, the idea is that men are attracted to young and beautiful women because they're more likely to carry offspring to term, hence ensuring continuation of the father's genetic makeup, and that women are attracted to men with money, power and status because they're more likely to provide the mother's offspring with a better upbringing. He described one aspect of beauty as being the waist:hip ratio (no doubt it's close to the infamous 36:24:36 proportions) because wider hips would be an indicator of greater likelihood to survive childbirth.

I've read in many different places that men looked for women with wide hips because they were supposed to be better "breeders". I don't think in olden times they cared if the woman survived childbirth as long as the male heir did, after all, there were always more women. *sigh* I'd guess that attitude isn't as prevalent anymore, at least I hope so.

Of course in those times, women didn't have a choice who they were married to most of the time, and their father would look for the man who could pay the most or bring the most powerful alliance, and mostly that would be the older men rather than the younger, handsomer ones.

There was a show on one of the Discovery channels last week about beauty. One theory used was mathematics, part of the Fibonacci (not sure of spelling) series, which used numbers to explain why certain proportions in nature are more beautiful.  I can't remember the exact numbers, but I remember it was fascinating. Argh, now I've set himself off on symetrical/asymetrical features when I asked him what the name of that theory was..help! LOL!

They would care if the alliance sealed by the marriage was dissolved upon the woman's death, or (gasp!) if the woman was actually loved. Plus in those days it seems that the baby suffocating or being injured during a difficult birth was a major concern.

Yes, it's the Fibonacci series that's used to explain the golden mean, or golden rectangle, or something--the Parthenon is the example used in Donald Duck in Mathemagic Land. :) Hadn't heard it applied to human beauty before, but after a brief googling session I see that there are several sites devoted to this subject.

Who knows about love in those days. The non fiction history books I've read rarely mention it (except for mistresses and lovers if they were exceptionally well loved) and the fictional historical books over-emphasize it. Perhaps it was a happy medium :) Difficult births seem very common for those times, due to the lack of knowledge about hygeine as well as the superstitions, like twins. I think it was believed that the second born was from the devil.

Thank you :) It seems to be my week for this theory. It was mentioned on "Taken" a night or so after we saw this show.

                   Now, wait a sec, here.

Whatever extended rants I may have gone on about it were not meant as disapproval. They were a result of the fact that here was this romance thread that, to a potentially jealous but non-insane observer like Kelsey, wasn't tipping itself off as anything to be jealous about. And then--AHAH!--the smoking gun! "Hold my hand, baby!"

Building the K/S conflict was was like an excavation, and finding "Hold my hand, baby!" is the discovery of the cornerstone. I am sorry if you feel your prose is diminished by my shorthand. :)

And then you denied that it was any such thing, even though many people seem to take it that way. One of your most faithful/enthusiastic/participatory fans, in fact, wrote a dialogue where she thought it was move overt than you do and you toned it down, if I have my recent history correct.

(and nothing about what the people who are praising it clashes with my original contention that it's the first overtly "romantic" thing he does. Hence the tingly surge. They've been waiting for a move for quite a while. Anticipation is a wonderful thing, blah blah blah.)

I certainly didn't mean to traumatize you over the thing. :)

Really? I would have thought the poetry of it would be an attraction for you. Basically, the plot is about two modern scholars who discover a correspondence between the Victorian poets that they are interested in. Parts of it will be amusing only if you've taken any post-modern lit classes and regard the deconstructionism school of thought as a tiresome self-indulgent charade, but those bits are few and far between. I do think it's worth a try.

When I was writing the book of poetry dialogue and was stuck on one line, I was trying to mine Possession (by A.S. Byatt, widely available, don't watch the movie because I hear it's just awful) but couldn't find much to steal from, possibly because the book is best appreciated as a whole. I admit that passage is not the best example of what I'm talking about, but it had to do with the first touch being hand-holding, and I liked the symmetry.

To put it a different way, if you liked either of the dialogues I wrote on a visceral level, you probably know the feeling I'm trying to describe.

Quote

Hm, I don't know about that. It was on the NY Times bestseller list for quite some time. I haven't suggested it to many people, but those privileged few really like it. E.g., my copy is currently on loan to a fish biologist who loves it and now his landscape architect wife has gotten sucked into it.

You don't have to be a programmer to get the cereal joke (hey, lots of other people are anal-retentive too) or other things. My eyes glazed over during the C++ or Perl or whatever stuff, and I wasn't particularly interested in the angular momentum thing, but I loved how all the other pages had something that cracked me up. He still doesn't understand the value of a denouement, though.

Don't know why your mother or the other CS student failed to appreciate the genius of Cryptonomicon. :) I'm getting an itch to reread it just talking about it.

They weren't intended to be negative, but merely a description of who I thought you were assuming the target audience to be, and I was trying to explain that I didn't fall into any of those categories. (Now that Baldur's Gate has entered my life, I do get the roleplaying jokes, finally.)

Yes on all points! It's the first real inkling you have that Solaufein is interested in you as more than just a debate partner. It's the first time that Kelsey (or anyone) has confirmation that he/she has a right to feel uneasy about all the time that Solaufein's been spending with CharName.

I daresay this is why some people have issues with this being a stealth romance. When I installed the mod, I knew all along that I was going to make Solaufein mine, having pined after him since the first time I played BG2, but the PC doesn't have much/any in-game knowledge till this LT.

Well, we're not going to change Wes's mind about this. I cheerfully resign myself to imagining deep meaningful glances being exchanged between the PC and Sola before this LT.

Heroic Self Sacrifice. The single most emotion-provoking theme ever. Who didn't get a little choked up when Borimir fell (book or movie)? How could anyone not feel a surge of mingled pride and grief at that last defiant call of "FREEDOM!" from William Wallace when he refused to beg for mercy? Who wasn't torn at least a little when Yoshimo chose to fall on the blade of a former companion rather than succomb to the geas (okay, maybe not so great an example, but it almost works). How many devoted table-top RPers have been stunned as a companion chose to sacrifice himself to save the rest of the party? How many have chosen to take the fall? Truly, this is an epic theme. Okay, done ranting.

Tsuru and Lisa, I've got a book recommendation for you. It's called The Boy Next Door, by Meggin Cabot. It's an epistolary novel (e-mails, anyway) about a NYC gossip columnist and the boy who moves in next door. Funny, romantic, hip. And hilarious!

Tsuru, forget The Red Queen. This is definitely up your alley!

Cabot also writes historical romance novels under the pen name Patricia Cabot. If those other books are as funny as this one, I might have to bend my own rules and read a (gulp) bodice ripper. Lisa, you done with that black armor yet?

Can't offer any opinions on Clark Ashton Smith, but in honor of the release of The Two Towers, here's an excerpt from Nearly Empty Rooms (http://www.nearlyemptyrooms.com/2002_07_01_archive.shtml):

If The Lord of the Rings had been designed by Bioware

Frodo: Oh, how awful it is here in the dungeon of Moria (level 3).

Sam: Yes master. (I am current in Servant mode. if you want me to attack your enemies, click on me and select "Warrior".)

Merry: I found 13 gold pieces, a potion of healing, and a short sword in those barrels over there.

Gimli: Indeed lad, the dwarves of Khazad-Dum did put many treasures in their barrels. Barrels were the foundation of the dwarven economy.

Boromir: Why have we not gone south to Minas Tirith? I swear I shall leave your service unless you complete my quest soon!

Merry: Oh look, more barrels.

Gimli: You know, while we're here, we could look for the fabled Lost Chamber of Durin.

Frodo: We're on a quest to save the world. We shouldn't get bogged down on meaningless side quests. Every moment we tarry, the dark lord gathers more forces.

Sam: But we tarried in Hobbiton, and Bree, and even Rivendell.

Merry: Yeah. We talked to every single person we could find.

Sam: And we gathered a dozen turnips for the gaffer, and rescued Lobelia's lost cat, and found Pippin's sister's boyfriend who'd fallen down the chalk mine at Michel Delving...

Pippin: And we rescued those lost kids in the Old Forest, and got those old books back from the Barrow for that author in Bree

Sam: and we looked in every barrel and cabinet in Rivendell.

Merry: I found Arwen's underwear.

Aragorn: What was that, Master Brandybuck? And if you don't complete my quest soon, I'll leave the party!

Boromir: Which quest is that, Aragorn?

Aragorn: To become king of - er, never mind.

Frodo: No more side quests. Pippin, check for traps.

Pippin: Hmm. Can't see any. Here, I'll use this stone - I'll chuck it down this hole to make sure there aren't any traps down there.

Gandalf: Fool of a took! Now the battle music has started! We must run. And you cannot save here!

Gimli: Dwarf needs food badly.

Legolas: Ai, ai, a Balrog! A balrog is come!

Gandalf: A Balrog. Now I understand. What an evil fate, and I'm already out of Protection vs Evil. Run for the bridge!

Merry: But there are still barrels in this room I haven't looked in!

Legolas: No damage! My weapon is useless against this foe!

Aragorn: The bridge is not far! And this would be a really good time to cast Haste, Gandalf!

Gandalf: I cannot. I've got a scripted death sequence triggerring at the mid-point of the bridge.

Aragorn: That'll leave us without a wizard. We'd better multiclass one of the hobbits to wizard next level.

Gandalf: Fine. I'm not even dead yet, and you're already replacing me!

Aragorn: Shut up and die, old man.

Gandalf: []

Balrog: [[]]

Gandalf: Fly you fools!

Legolas: Featherfall, you senile...oh, never mind.

Frodo: Alas, what shall we do now without Gandalf's leadership?

Gimli: If you sell your mithril shirt, we should have enough money to buy Raise Dead off Galadriel in Lorien.

Merry: Have they got barrels in Lorien?

Book Club Report

Here's my report on several recommendations from fellow board members. :)

The Serpent's Tooth, Diana Paxson
A good serviceable book, sort of Mists of Avalon Lite. Retelling of King Lear in a Goddess-worshipping society. I liked the characterizations except for the unconvincing love story.  Boy meets girl at boot camp, boy and girl bond, boy and girl fall in love. Yawn.

The Merlin Trilogy, Mary Stewart
I was surprised that such well-written books could fail so utterly to capture my attention. I guess it was because Merlin just wasn't very interesting to me. He didn't seem to have much of a personality. Never expressed any opinions about the things he was doing, just did them. I perked up a bit when he started tutoring Arthur, but that was due more to the fact that Arthur actually evinced some emotions. I also liked the clash of new and old religions as portrayed in the books. Made it through the first two books but I can't quite bring myself to read the third one.

Mirror Dance, Lois McMaster Bujold
I suspect that she turns up on people's lists of favorites because she sort of appeals to the LCD in SF readers. Nothing really stands out, but nothing's offensive, either.

The Thin Man
Funny movie. Cute dog. Couldn't believe that they were serving highballs in imperial pint glasses. The plot was a bit thin at times, but clearly the banter between Powell and Loy was the real point of the movie. Four out of five stars.

Some books I read in 2002 that I really liked

The Blind Assassin, Margaret Atwood
The main story focuses on sisters Iris and Laura, interwoven with a story of two nameless lovers who improvise a science-fiction story, all of which are quite different but equally absorbing. Lots of puzzles to figure out, bittersweet love stories, engaging plot. If I hadn't read it so compulsively, examining the plot structure would make for a very instructive course in how to write a novel.

The Boy Next Door, Meggin Cabot
A fast and funny read that has absolutely no pretentions and makes no apologies about what it is. It was a refreshing change of pace from those countless books that want to be great literature but fall short (e.g., An Equal Music by Vikram Seth, which I would have liked better if it hadn't screamed reading group material).

The first five Amber books, Roger Zelazny
I was surprised that none of my friends had ever recommended these to me earlier. They are so good! But probably everyone here read them long ago.

The Song of Fire and Ice books, George R. R. Martin
Three books with a very historical-fiction sort of feel. At first I thought it was just a ripoff of the reign of Edward II (one of the early Edwards, anyway) but they've turned out quite differently. I like the court intrigues and the politics. I don't like how he writes about Dany, who is one of my favorite characters--it makes me think Martin is a pederast. Yuck.

We have to write reports?? Eeek :)

I've always liked The Thin Man movies. I actually rarely miss one when it shows up on cable. I like anything with Cary Grant and Katherine Hepburn as well, something about the wisecracks between them is just hilarious to me.

As for Merlin... I forget, did I mention The Dragon Queen by Alice Borchardt? Her Merlin is definitely not personality-less.  Actually I don't like her Merlin, but that's the whole point of him in this particular series.

And the library *still* doesn't have "The Boy Next Door". I may have to request they get it.

Oooooh yes. But they should be read, and read often. The second five are worth reading as well, if for no other reason than to appreciate how much better Zelazny knows and writes swords-and-intuition Corwin over magic-and-"brains" Merle.

I must agree that it's icky. I don't mind sexual overtones and sex. But when it virtually always involves those I would consider underage... eeeeeeeeee.

Great, engaging series aside from that, though.

Have you seen this site?

Which member of the Royal House of Amber are you? (http://www.roger-zelazny.com/royalty.shtml)

I turned out to be Fiona, which was interesting because while I was reading the books, she was the one I most identified with.

from some random fan page:

Corwin's grandsire and father to Oberon.   Dworkin was a Lord of Chaos before his betrayal.  He created Amber by inscribing the Pattern with his own blood, using the Jewel Of Judgement.

Dworkin created the Trumps for Oberon's children and instructed them in its use. His most attentive students were Bleys, Brand and Fiona.

I have no recollection of this guy's personality in the books, but if it weren't for him, the rest of us wouldn't be here, and the coolest parts of the books wouldn't exist. I think you're supposed to be wildly creative.

And you have Wes, Jason, and me (all full siblings) sitting at your feet and imbibing of your wisdom.

Bleys...the playboy of Amber. He's got style and panache, always making a show for everyone when he's around. Flaunting his grace and good looks, he's a favorite of the ladies, and trusted by the men. He's everyone's friend, at least while they draw his interest.

And who the hell is Osric?

Not that bad.  Osric was not too accepting of his autocratic father.  When dad remarried (and juggled the records to disinherit Osric - his father was a king & could do that), Osric and another brother Finndo, rebelled.  As a result it became necessary, in the official hagiography, that "they died bravely for Amber."

Well, are we talking about not being able to imagine Bleys as the playboy of Amber, or Wes?

Despite having a decent amount of "screen time" Bleys is really not one of the better fleshed-out characters, but I think we're meant to get the impression that he's probably the most "dashing" of all the princes, plus smart enough not to let on that he's gone at sunrise.

If you're familiar with an old game called "Vampire: the Masquerade" you may find it funny to note that while I was always personally partial to the disciplines of Dominate and Thaumaturgy, my friends all insisted that Presence was my true calling based on my (perceived) ability to naturally attract willing followers.

In my experience charm is easier to see in person than in writing ... or perhaps it's a different talent. The letter-writing of old somehow doesn't seem to compete with the instant messaging of today.

Is anyone here an Into the Woods fan? I'll leave with a quote I never liked from one of the princes: "I was raised to be Charming ... not Sincere."

OK, I should have known this would be taken the worst possible way. What I meant was that "playboy" implies a certain screw-you, I'm-just-out-for-my-own-personal-pleasure/gain attitude that I don't think you possess. I regret any other inadvertent conclusions that might be drawn from my off-the-cuff comment. I like you very much, Wes, and, to make up for my careless remark, I will buy you lunch the next time I'm in the Bay Area and will allow you to charm me in person.

Additional groveling is available upon request.

With regards to the 2nd act, I think that's the point--that the probable reality beneath the surface of fairy tales is not always pleasant.

Or did you not like that particular quote for another reason?

Heh, Dworkin was a raving nutter in the earlier books, I never finished the series much to my shame, but there were so many other I wanted to read at the time...Just re-read the Coldfire Trilogy by C.S. Friedman, and I still think they are some of the best written sci-fan books I've ever read. I know it's a good book when I start wondering about the characters and the place while I'm working. Re-reading the Song of Fire and Ice again in anticipation of the 4th book. Also picked up Michael Crichton's Eaters of the Dead out of curiousity. The 13th Warrior is one of the best movies I've ever seen, and the fact that the book isn't so much a work of fiction as a re-translation of the fragments of the journal of Achmed ibn Fadlan is fascinating. Also read the first book in Weiss and Hickmans Dragon Disciples series. It promises to be a good read. I've always had a certain fondness for contemporary fantasy involving dragons. The book is called Dark Heart I think (it's been awhile) and quite interesting. In the magazine rack next to my chair are Elmister: the Making of a Mage, and Salvatore's latest, Transcendence, book 2 in the Second Demonwars Saga. Well, that's my book propaganda for the day, I'm gonna finish A Game of Thrones now,

Yech. One of his major selling points (in his eyes) was that he'd worked on Democratic presidential campaigns since McGovern. I was scarcely even born when McGovern was running, for crying out loud. Though I wouldn't have minded that if he hadn't been creepy in other ways--calling relentlessly (I was young and foolish and gave him my phone number), clinging to my car door when I tried to drive away, etc.

(Chicago, eh? I was driven through the city once on a business trip, and it was the single most terrifying driving experience of my life...two cabs hurtling the wrong way down one-way streets towards our car!
Heheh.  Sounds like driving in Boston...going the correct way down a one-way street is for tourists!

Try driving in the rare rain in Phoenix :) People here have either forgotten how or never knew how to drive in rain. I wasn't as scared driving in DC in rush hour as I am of the other guy here in the rain!

Hey! I used to be a memorably creepy guy who hung out around apartment complexes at strange hours of the night! Of course I was a security guard at the time with no stalker-like proclavities. I have sat near rather strange people at coffee shops who I wouldn't have gone to lunch with had they payed me, sexual innuendoes or no. As for the driving, well, the most frightening drivers I've seen were Californian tourists. Weather, place time, NOTHING keeps these people from endangering everyone on the sidewalk!

Hey!  I resemble that remark.  Although, in my defense, the reason I was driving so recklessly was that the street/highway signage was so poor.  I'd never thought I'd come across a place with worse street/highway signage than Boston, but the Monterey area won hands down.

1. Them's fightin' words.

2. You have obviously never driven in the metro Atlanta area.

No way. Boston streets evolved from cowpaths, and it's all been downhill from there. Plus the drivers (and parkers) are insane. The last time I visited my parents at Christmas, I went into Boston for some last minute shopping and found people parked on the off ramp near Govt Center.

Any Chinese city of six million and up takes the cake for traffic. They only paint lines on the street there to keep people employed. The same goes for the installation of traffic lights.

Did you go to a restaurant in Pacific Grove named the Fishwife, Kismet? That is the best seafood restaurant on the planet, bar none. I meet people in the most random places who have eaten there.

Hey, here in the San Francisco Bay Area some of our freeways have 5 lanes, and they're still not enough to keep things flowing nicely...you send us to places with non-California (read: non-sunny) weather, take 3-4 of those lanes away from us...

What are we supposed to do??

Oh, well the Boston streets themselves certainly win the random weirdness award.  I just meant that I'd never thought to see a city with street and highway signs that were more vague (or just more absent).

As for the Fishwife, I belive we talked about going there but decided against it in the end.

*smiles sweetly* Not my fault your from California, Jonte. How you can live there is beyond me. I spent Independence day weekend in Redding, and it was the nastiest, hottest, and overall most miserable experience in any state I've ever been. Even the heat of Las Vegas didn't hold a candle to it.

I live her because I love it here.  I spent three hellish years in Georgia and could not get home fast enough.

And for your information, nobody lives in Redding.  Bleh!

Hellish is synonimous with Las Vegas. 5 years spent hoping that my shirt was the right color for this block, that the bench I was about to sit on hadn't been vomited upon by transients too recently, and that there was air conditioning somewhere within the next block or so. The only redeeming factor was the bus system. Nothing beats public transit as a place to freak people out by talking to spoons and shouting invectives at the monkey in your backpack. Try it, it's fun :)

OK, I should have known this would be taken the worst possible way.
Not at all, it's all in good fun here.

I regret any other inadvertent conclusions that might be drawn from my off-the-cuff comment.

If I were a WW I wouldn't be getting this kind of bowing and scraping. :-) Seriously now, friendly banter is rarely misconstrued.

and will allow you to charm me in person.

It seems more likely that our roles would be reversed -- I seem to have lost all inklings of being suave and debonair when I became a grad student.

Jonte, when's that convention? I want to mark it on my calendar to make sure that I don't accidentally schedule something else that day.

That's good. :) I tend to over-apologize rather than under-apologize; note how I even apologized to Jason in this very thread. :) Better to be unnecessarily sorry than not sorry enough. Plus I was having a stinker of a day at work, so I just assumed the worst.

That sort of sounds like a threat rather than a promise ...

Has anyone read War for the Oaks by Emma Bull? The phouka sort of reminds me of Solaufein.

Okay, now that I've stopped laughing... biologically impossible. We're considering a WW-auxiliary though

You mean, it's biologically impossible for him to be a WW? He's not saying that he is one, he's using the subjunctive so he knows that he isn't one.

I believe the link was actually to some L. Jonte art that JC later reposted here (http://forums.pocketplane.net/index.php?topic=15973.0).
