Title: de'Arnise Romance V2 Released!
Post by: jcompton on January 06, 2008, 03:08:53 PM
I know. I can scarcely believe it myself.

PPG is proud to announce the release of version 1 of de'Arnise Romance. The mod adds a new romance track to displaced debutante Nalia de'Arnise, late of the Keep and lately of the Copper Coronet.

The de'Arnise Romance mod proudly brings you...

- A complete romance in Shadows of Amn
- A very nearly tasteful flirt pack
- New adventures with Nalia and her old family friends and enemies
- A carefully selected soundtrack

The mod is immediately available at http://www.pocketplane.net/nalia . You may preview the README at http://mods.pocketplane.net/readmes/README-DeArnise.txt .

Enjoy!

(It's definitely not a Christmas release, mind. On the account that Christmas has come and gone, oh, twenty-five minutes ago).

I'm so glad to see this finally come out!   I have just done a new install again (for the umpteenth time) and now a new Xan has come out, the Luxley Family, and now this!  I just hope it is not one mod too many (I play with just about everything under the sun) but even if I have to reinsall all over again this will make it worth it.

Thanks JCompton and Kulyok and everyone else who finally made this live!   :) :) :)

What are the things that got left out?

It's not like we had a bunch of content that we elected not to put in. It's a question of "What didn't we get to that we once-upon-a-time said we would do?"

The biggest ones would be the revoice (which we did actually start on a while back, but didn't get very far on) and new Keep management scenarios. Like I allude to in the FAQ, there are probably other things I promised which I have forgotten.

Yep, that's what I meant, thanks.

What about that 'corrupt Nalia' thing? Was it implemented? Did you ever seriously considered it?

No, I abandoned the "corruption path" idea long ago... I want to say even back in the FWP days I had called that one off. It could be intriguing, but it would be a tremendous amount of work, and just not something I was or am prepared to do.

Gotta try this mod, compatibility issue with Multi strongholds portion of EOU, right? I'll get around to unistalling that bit soon.

I think they should be compatible - but anyway, extra reports are always welcome.

I have the multi strongholds from G3 Tweaks installed and had no trouble getting the Keep.  I saw the extra dialog that normally isn't there so I guess there is no compatibility problem.
Title: odd banter
Post by: vestdan on January 07, 2008, 01:24:51 PM
I have Nalia and Jaheira both in the party, and Nalia just interrupted one of Jaheira's lovetalks. Problem is, their bickering left out Jaheira's actual question, but the answers are all the same. For reference:

J:I... I worry sometimes...
N: You worry incessantly.
[Bickering continues]
J: I have no patience or time to indulge whatever agenda you are pursuing, Nalia. If my concerns are incompatible with yours, expect no apologies.

Then I get these choices:
1: I do not mind. Yes, I hope to spare them the pain of loss I felt.
2: Those I spent time with as a child; their absence is a great loss to me.
3: Some were valuable to the group, and I have to recoup that loss as soon as possible.
4: I don't know either, because it is none of your business. Keep your topics to the matter at hand.

This (i'm sure) was a 'do you think of those who are gone' talk, but again, she forgets to ask the question itself, hah. Just a tad confusing.

Title: 'nother tiny nitpick
Post by: vestdan on January 07, 2008, 08:36:41 PM
Nalia starts all her little flirts by coming to you with a hint of a smile, but it doesn't fit so well if she's angry with you, hah. Quite fun so far, and I like the peaceful guitar background for the talks.

Downloaded - I will get rolling in a few weeks, I expect, with my first ever game where I keep Nalia past getting the stronghold! But I just have to do the code-peek... really nice to see this!

You're probably thinking of the "did you enjoy it?" sequence. The way she says things, and when she's saying them (as you observe, as part of a flirting sequence) should tell you that she's not as angry as all that...

Okay, here's an actual suggestion/gripe:

Could you make the romance related quests update the journal? It isn't too hard to forget who you are looking for or where they might be on some occasions, particularly if, for example, the Harpers kindap Jaheira again or something.

Great work though, thanks again from satisfied user.

That's a reasonable suggestion, yes. I tend to forget about the usefulness of the journal, honestly.

This will probably sound really lame.. but one of the things which made the de'Arnise Romance such a good experience for me
is the romance music theme. It provides so much more ambiance and greatly helps me experience a emotional commitment.

We have just released Version 2. Most importantly it corrects a bug with the Nalia vampire sequence. Other minor changes are in as well. You can safely install it in the middle of your game.

Right on top of the previous version without uninstalling it?

Did anyone else have any trouble with the flirts not working?

I played through a ways past the sixth lovetalk (then the readme says the flirts should begin). According to the dialougues it seems the relationship is going fine, but when I click to talk to her nothing happens.

Do the flirts work in TOB?  ...that would be at least something.

Maybe an epilogue too...  ;)

In ToB, Nalia has different dialogue files, so that would be no.

JC, you have just inspired me to reinstall SOA for the first time in over five years. I am planning to finally try out the gameplay tweeks from PPG and naturally I need this romance.  Um...

Um...I can't stand playing as a male anymore in any third person games, I so much prefer looking at a female avatar..how do I  override the gender checks using shadowkeeper to activate the romance? And I know some mods in the past, IIRC have multiple romance checks at various points in the game...

Please help.

:)

Title: Re: de'Arnise Romance V2 Released!

I'm pretty sure it would be far simpler to just change the avatar in Shadowkeeper.

Oh, got it.  So there are multiple checks...didn't Kelsey have multiple romance condition checks?  Well, it would be the easiest..but hey, I'm not a super fan of picking the easy way...

 :P

But I guess you're right... Thanks, JC.

Btw...I noticed in the screenshots that there is rivalry between Nalia and Jaheira, is there one with Aerie as well?

 ;)

I don't remember and I don't want to hunt for it. Do you? Just change the avatar. Simplest way to the finish line.

Of course.

Does it get catty with...viccy?  I mean I can just imagine her dialog...might be worth it just to take viccy along...you really should add teasers to the readme...which conflict with who is...the juciest...

I have long maintained that romance conflicts at their best show the characters at their worst. I think the player (and PC) should be a little dismayed by the bad behavior.

So although there are quality bits in both the Jaheira and Viconia conflicts, the Aerie/Nalia conflict is the most effective from that standpoint, in my opinion.

I've decided to field a male sorc...too annoying to do otherwise, and I am going to enjoy this romance the way it was intended to...though now I have to find a good avatar picture...sigh...

But this is good news...I was planning to field my favorite team of nalia, aerie, jaheira, imoen and jan. (I can always look up the viccy dialog...or just take her until Brynlaw...)

Please tell me there's hair pulling...  8)

I would have thought that the most...violent conflict would be nalia/viccy...viccy is certainly capable of poisoning nalia...  :o or attacking her...aerie would be more...lady like?

Oh, does any of the girls leave if you choose the wrong options?  And please tell me that Imoen has comments about her brother's love life...

Oh, does any of the girls leave if you choose the wrong options?

There's one way Aerie runs back to the circus, but no point where the Bio three pull an EscapeArea... although there are a few places Nalia will if you're obviously, grotesquely cruel.

And please tell me that Imoen has comments about her brother's love life...

I lean towards saving that sort of thing for TOB when Imoen is definitely feeling much better. So... don't hold your breath.

oh come on...at least a comment at spellhold about her "Player" brother if you have aerie, jaheira and Nalia in the same party..

Imoen: Oh Ao...you not only date this "Nalia" chick, but you keep your discards around?  Bro, you make me sick...

Aerie and Jaheira: It's not like that!

Nalia: Finally! I like you Imoen.

PC: Am I allowed to say something in my defense?

Nalia, Imoen, Aerie and Jaheira: NO!

PC: This is hell, isn't it?

Jan: Not hardly, I still have my turnip stash. By the way, my boy, have I ever mentioned how I ended up in Hell once? There I was, laying down a pentagram of turnip skins, when all of a sudden...

PC: Shut up Jan!

Imoen: This is the hero of Baldur's gate?

PC: So not helping sis.

Nalia: He's actually good as long as he keeps his mouth shut.

Jaheira: Yep.

Aerie: Right.

Imoen: Dead on.

PC: So hating you all now.

Userunfriendly still here?  Hey, buddy, ever get past the Aerie obsession? ;)

I was thinking that there might be a suitable response/threat to Imoen treating her poor brother, who just went through so much to save her from Irenicus:

Threaten to download the Imoen Romance mod if she keeps this up and give her a brand new perspective on why her brother's ex-girlfriends, or anyone else who knows about their true relationship as half-siblings, being around bothers her.

I somehow doubt much/any progress has been made on a ToB version but... I for one check back regularly on the off chance. I always liked Nalia back in the day, enjoyed this mod immensely, and am sad that that story has no closure. Even if it was just a tragic death/memory erasure/possession or something to explain why she doesn't act quite right in ToB, that'd be something, hah.

If Jason decides to continue on Nalia ToB(which I hope he eventually does; if I'm around, I'll probably help with coding - "probably", mind) - it will likely happen after TBH is out. So look out for TBH release at http://planewalkergames.com/ . :)

I don't normally have creative conundrums but I do with Nalia in TOB. I am genuinely uncertain that a couple of story decisions really are the right ones. But I do intend to provide closure. Sooner or later.

Get better soon. You know, Russian writers have a secret(they never seem to want to share it, but I'll level with you): great ideas come in the shower. Always.

(Nalia would probably be scandalized that someone's thinking of her there, though.)

Well, I have no Russian ancestry, but I do have a lot of Polish and Lithuanian blood.

Great stuff comes from Poland! (The Witcher)... and lots of great shower scenes. (I'll stop there)  ;)

Seriously, dude, I'm pretty sure this is my first post on this site, but I've been periodically checking to see if you've finished the de'Arnise romance (TOB).  I've noticed several other posters indicating they've been checking too; I think you have a underground fan base/following!  Baldur's Gate is my favorite game of all time and I have been waiting to re-play a Baldur's Tutu (with ultimately tragic fling with Dynaheir) followed by a lasting bond with *your* Nalia (I know your name from the many great mods you've done elsewhere)...but I want it to be complete, cause I'm an all or nothing kinda guy.

One request (I know this may be too much to ask - and maybe this is what is tearing at you?):  happy ending please?  ...please don't kill her.  This world has enough unhappy endings to let it invade our fantasy worlds too.  If you are truly torn, maybe you could do a 'gotcha' kind of ending, where we 'think' she's not going to make it, but it all works out (ala 'Stranger than Fiction')

Ok...I've said my peace.  Just want to give you major props, again, jcompton - you do damn good work!

Post by: jcompton on January 19, 2009, 01:45:02 PM
No, no, I wouldn't kill off Nalia as part of the romance thread, that's not on the table and really wouldn't fit the "theme" of the romance, in any case.

Thanks for the kind words.

Yo. Great mod (I can never figure out why this was not available by default), but I do have a few things to mention, though some of these might have been mentioned somewhere else.
1. Music. It's a nice music that fits her, but guitar music doesn't really fit in with BG2's middle-age fantasy setting.
2. Nalia's speech seems to run a little long compared to the default characters. The writing is not bad, but it seemed unnatural at times.

Any word on the ToB release? I've been waiting to play the game thinking that it would have been poping up about now.

Is it any point in using this mod if CHARNAME can't romance Nalia? I'm mostly interested in getting a closure to the quest and find out who The Boss is?

No, the content is really geared around the romance.

I have to add my voice to any chorus begging you to publish a ToB conclusion to this mod. d'AR looks very promising from what I've seen of it, and a solid reason to take a character that is otherwise often dismissed as a less interesting clone of Imoen. You've given new life to the girl and I thank you for that. The lack of a ToB portion, however, always wrecks character mods for me. I find it really hard to enjoy mods knowing that their stories will die before they do, and that I will need to justify in my head why a character who has been a core of my party for so long suddenly falls silent or walks away.

A mod that follows through to the end of the story, however, is a treasure I hold most dear. Kelsey is an excellent example of this. As he's a character, he's pretty good, probably the best mod-original NPC I've played, but what changes him from a good mod to a great mod in my mind (and why Imoen very frequently has a sorcerous boyfriend) is because he remains a true part of the group just when Imoen and the Scion need their friends most. It doesn't even matter that there ToB side quests related to him, it's just that he's still part of the story. It's just one tiny, insignificant last little bit, but for me it's almost worth more than the rest of it combined.

I know Nalia is a bit of an exception, because she still carries her given story to the end and remains part of the team even if her relationship with the Scion falls cold and dead. Still, it would be wonderful to see this half of the character to find her way to the bitter end, because Nalia does feel like half a character without it. I haven't yet won the game with this mod active, but if her epilogue goes by without even a mention of her relationship to the Scion of Bhaal, it will feel an empty ending.

Sorry for the rambling post. I would just love to see how this story ends.

bravo!  (and belated happy 5th birthday!)
i will definitely yoink this, it was at the top of my 'want-please-hurry-guys-pleeeeeez' list... way back when.
i will also not be upgrading to windows 7 any time soon, as i hear that our beloved BG is incompatible... grrrr.
and just quickly - apologies for the vanishment, WoW did indeed do me in - however, bioware has had the most recent laugh, as dragon age has ripped me from blizzard's grasp over the last couple of months...

I can't believe I haven't checked here for over two years an missed the release.

So here's a belated thank you for something I've waited for since it was first announced - when was that? 2002?
