Title: Compatibility question
Post by: my very bad english on December 04, 2005, 03:07:34 PM
Hi,

I'm almost afraid to ask this. I don't want to be boring nor I want to set oil on the flame. I just ask this
as a player who enjoys and appreciate both works. I searched all the forums but I haven't found clear
answer. So the question: can I safely install both Redemption and Turnabout on my heavily moded BG2 game? Will they conflict with each other?
I would really appreciate the answer. Thanks in advance.

P.S.

I was trying to post this topic on Redemption forum but it seems it is locked for guests.

Uhm... I guess for some reason this question is silly, funny or both. :)
Care to elaborate your remark Evaine Dian?  ;)

It's OK.  You're just another innocent victim of another board's ridiculous policies.

If I had to guess, I'd say that they are *not* compatible, but it's just going to take some testing to know for sure.

I think your wording hit the nail on the head, thus my remark.

@my very bad english

Yes, you just proved several points in a recent discussion (http://forums.pocketplane.net/index.php/topic,20945.0.html) with a single post.

I'm in the process of testing for The Longer Road conflicts on the technical side, since nothing has jumped out at me from the coding. I'll report my results when I've confirmed them.

There would definitely be gaps content-wise, as Yoshimo, Khalid, Tiax, and Dynaheir will make no acknowledgement of Irenicus's presence in the party. Because of personality conflicts between the modders of both projects, cross-mod content is extremely unlikely to be added in the future.

Edit: Oop. I just realized the question was about Redemption compatibility. That would be a different set of testing.

Hm, yes, jester I saw that topic. Didn't read all, altrough. I think it is always shame when two great moders
with great ideas come in clinch. It is always a loss for playing community. I didn't exactly understood all
the details or reasons but what I saw doesn't look good. Anyway I don't want to moralize and I don't
know whole story. Question about compatibility still stands. Please, if anyone know the answer I would
be grateful.  :)

If you feel like contributing, so that others with the same question might benefit, you could always go through and test it yourself.  Unless you don't play very often and don't want your one or two play throughs to be ruined by incompatible mods, that is.  I know everyone here would appreciate it.

Hell, even The Longer Road folks might appreciate it, too.

I will try it Ghreyfain. Only the minor problem is that it will be my first game after long time. In the
meantime various moders had created so many mods and I am eager to try most of them. Currently I
have in my BG2 install monstrosity which consists of WeiDU TDD, SOS, Ctb, TS and nearly sixty smaller
mods. Compatibility between Redemption and Turnabout is one of the few remaining issues. It will take
me nearly a year to finish this gargantuan thing and I want to enjoy it every step. I don't want to stuck
in the very end. You can't blame me if I want to play it safe in that case.  ;)
As for The Longer Road I didn't install it.  :)

How foul and closed minded. Who would such a thing? Sounds like a place that I would not care to visit.

I think you can generally assume fairly safely that we'll make sure all the mods on PPG are compatible. (Tutu excepted.)

I've managed to play through 3 of the 4 scenarios to check Longer Road/Turnabout compatibility (Accepting a new soul through Ilmater remains elusive), and I have repeated the finale a good dozen times with variations on these endings and Turnabout's options. Unfortunately, I noticed after my playing that the version of Longer Road I downloaded through the Studios mirror is marked v1.5, whereas the forum has an offsite link to v1.5.1. Hopefully, the differences between the two versions do not render my efforts null and void.

Some of the problems and gaps I saw during testing that players may notice:

- Khalid, Dynaheir, Tiax, and Yoshimo will not react to Irenicus being in the party if they are revived via a pool.

- LR assigns Alianna (the PC's mother) a portrait for her appearance before the second challenge. Alianna will have a different portrait when revived via a pool. (Turnabout varies them depending on the PC's race.)

- There are no reactions from Turnabout revived characters when Irenicus takes the PC's soul.

- For the ending where Irenicus takes the PC's soul, only Turnabout and LR epilogues played before the end credits. Bioware epilogues were skipped.

- For the endings where Irenicus takes another Bhaalspawn's soul or is sent back to the Abyss, Bioware and LR epilogues played before the end credits. Turnabout epilogues were skipped.

In summary, players should not have any problems completing ToB, and they will not miss any Longer Road material because of conflicts between these two mods. They may, however, notice the lack of cross-mod content or missing epilogues.

Okay, according to my research (or at least what passes for same), this is the order in which to install things:

Official patches
BaldurDash or G3 Fixpack
Non-WeiDU (maximum of 1)
NPCs
Banter/Flirt packs
Quests
Kits
Items
Tweakpacks (including Ashes of Embers)
Divine Remix
Crossmod Banterpack
Virtue

Now, Ascension is pretty much an extension of the main plot, and required for one component of Kelsey, so it makes sense that it goes right between one's non-WeiDU mod (as if there were any anymore) and the NPCs. Is this correct? Now for the question that's actually relevant: Should one install Turnabout directly after Ascension, or does it belong in the "quests" section?

It shouldn't really matter, it mostly becomes a question of player preference about epilogue order: Would you prefer to see any mod NPC epilogues first, or do you want to see an epilogue from Turnabout first? The mod you install _later_ will show up _earlier_ in the epilogue list.

Okay then, I'll place Ascension, followed by Turnabout, as the first WeiDU mods in "the optimal" install order.

Related thought: Ruad can make an item that allows you to summon Yoshimo when you need him, and I would assume that his heart would be one of the required components. So, if/when Yoshimo says he can't serve CHARNAME because his soul is in torment, it would add a bit more flavor if the game checked the party's inventory for the summoning bottle (I'd provide you with the filename, but I don't have Ruad installed at the moment), and if it's there, Yoshimo could give the party a little piece of his mind about it.
