Title: The Complete List of BG1 BIFF files, or What A BG1 Full Install Looks Like
Post by: Ghreyfain on December 19, 2004, 10:30:00 PM
Now, a lot of people have been having problems with the conversion because for some reason BG1's installation process doesn't copy over all the necessary files, even though the user selects full install (or custom install and checks everything).

For reference, if you're having trouble installing things, check your Baldur's Gate data folder for the following BIFFs.  If any are missing, there's your bug for you.  You'll have to manually browse through the CD and copy the BIFF over.

Post by: belboz on December 31, 2004, 03:51:59 PM
I'm not entirely sure how to do this. My BGI:ToS install (after I have done a full installation) has lots of files with a .bif extension, but the only such files on the CDs are movies. There are files with similar names, but they all have .cbf extensions.

I assume this is the problem I'm having--or rather, that I'm having a similar one. I have done a custom install and checked everything, and when I try to play Tutu, the game crashes when I enter certain areas (the area just north of Nashkel, for example). My bg1tutu.log file contains some failure notices which look suggestive, although they don't mention .bif files per se:

Failure("resource [ar0400.BCS] not found"): resource not found in source: ar0400
[...]
Failure("resource [ar0401.BCS] not found"): resource not found in source: ar0401
[...]
Failure("resource [SW1HO4.ITM] not found"): resource not found in source: SW1HO4
  SW1HO4.ITM : Failure("resource [SW1HO4.ITM] not found")
[...]
Failure("resource [SW1HO4.ITM] not found"): resource not found in source: SW1HO4
  SW1HO4.ITM : Failure("resource [SW1HO4.ITM] not found")

...and so on.

THoughts on what I might be doing wrong?

Thanks much.

The .cbf files are compressed biff files.  The important thing, I think, is that they be on the hard drive.  That's what this list is checking.

The list is the same if we didnt install the expansion of BG 1??

Good question.  I've modified the list to show the two TotSC biffs separately.  (If anyone can confirm that there are other TotSC-only biffs, please let me know)

Okay, actually, the AREA05*, 15*, and 20* are all part of TotSC, too.  Not sure why you don't have MPCREANM, MPGUI, or MPSOUNDS.

Does anyone else here have a non-TotSC install?

I also seem to be missing MPCREANM, MPGUI, and MPSounds. I am also missing AREA050D and AREA100A. Anyone know what CD those are supposed to be on? I looked through them but couldn't find them.

The AREA bifs should be on your TotSC CD.  Not sure about the others.  1 or 2, I'd hazard to guess.

I've tryed copying the .cbf files from the CDs to my bauldur's gate data folder, and then installing tutu, but it didn't work (I have original saga, if that matters any). How would I get tutu to work if these .cbf files can't be converted into .bif files?
Title: Re: The Complete List of BG1 BIFF files, or What A BG1 Full Install Looks Like
Post by: Ghreyfain on February 17, 2005, 09:13:12 PM
Does it give you an error when you try it with the .cbf's?  You can't do a full installation with TOS?
Title: Re: The Complete List of BG1 BIFF files, or What A BG1 Full Install Looks Like
Post by: FriendlyToilot on February 17, 2005, 09:19:35 PM
Thanks for the quick reply. I did do a full install, but nearly all the .biff's were missing, so I tryed copying the .cbf area files to the data folder from the CDs. When I try to run the tutu installer, it says it can't find the .bif's, and it doesn't even look at the .cbf's as far as I can tell.

Hmm.  I wonder if there are tools to decompress .cbf files.  WinBiff, maybe?  I'm not sure where that's located, these days, but you could investigate that.  Hopefully someone else will come along who knows about this sort of thing.
Title: Re: The Complete List of BG1 BIFF files, or What A BG1 Full Install Looks Like

I found WinBiff here: http://www.clandlan.net/index.php?file=tbgmirror.htm
But, like most things on computers, I can't figure it out. Can only get it to find .key files. Anything that can help would be appreciated.

Ah, I made it to the Friendly Arm Inn! It seems what fixed it was doing a custom install of BG1, with everything checked.  I really should of tryed that before posting, sorry I wasted your time, Ghreyfain. Anyone who has the same problem should maybe try that.

I have only Baldur's Gate 1 without the Swordcoast addon and I can't find the following bif-files, too :

AREA100A
MPCREANM
MPGUI
MPSounds

the strange thing is, when I install Tutu (bg1tutu.exe v.4), the installation don't stop. so perhaps I don't need these files.

but on the other hand : when I'm ready installing the bg1tutu.exe and installing the tutufix v.9 this happens while installing the core bugfixes :

ERROR locating resource for 'COPY'
Resource [_sw1h24.itm] not found in KEY file:
        [./chitin.key]
Stopping installation because of error.

ERROR Installing [Core Bugfixes], rolling back to previous stat
Will uninstall 606 files for [SETUP-TUTUFIX.TP2] component 0.
Uninstalled    606 files for [SETUP-TUTUFIX.TP2] component 0.
ERROR: Failure("resource [_sw1h24.itm] not found for 'COPY'")

I can start the game but my bug is, that my character only has 4 hitpoints, allthough I have a high constitution. even Imoen has 6 hitpoints at the beginning.  and I also did a complete reinstall of tutu as mentioned in   http://forums.pocketplane.net/index.php?topic=17990.0

Yeah, the TotSC biffs should only be necessary if you, uh, have TotSC.  No one's ever told me if MP* biffs are TotSC or not, though.

Can anyone tell me if sw1h24.itm is in non-TotSC?
Title: Re: The Complete List of BG1 BIFF files, or What A BG1 Full Install Looks Like

I would like to help you so much,  but I have no TotSC to check it.   :'(

hmm,  are there any differences in the various language versions ? I have the german version of BG1 and BG2.

and where would I have to search for this sw1h24.itm-file, if I had ToTSC installed ?
Title: Re: The Complete List of BG1 BIFF files, or What A BG1 Full Install Looks Like
Post by: Ghreyfain on February 19, 2005, 07:25:00 PM
Actually, the way to check if it's TotSC only is to not have TotSC.  If you get either Infinity Explorer or Near Infinity, you can check all the games .itm files.  If sw1h24.itm isn't in either list, then it's TotSC-only and you'll have helped me identify the bug (and probably how to fix it).

Actually, I just checked it, and it's the Flame Tongue sword.  That's in BG1 without TotSC, right?

You got the Flame Tongue at the bottom of Durlag's Tower, so I'd presume not.

I checked it in my BG1 item-folder :

sw1h means one-handed-sword instead of sw2h, which means two-handed-sword   ;D

my list of one-handed swords goes from sw1h01 to sw1h17.   than there is a huge gap and than there are the swords
sw1h98 and sw1h99.

If you compare this item list of BG1   http://db.gamefaqs.com/computer/doswin/file/baldurs_gate_items.txt     :

SW1H01 - Bastard Sword
SW1H02 - Bastard Sword +1
SW1H03 - Bastard Sword +1, Shapeshifters
SW1H04 - Long Sword
SW1H05 - Long Sword +1
SW1H06 - Long Sword +2
SW1H07 - Short Sword
SW1H08 - Short Sword +1
SW1H09 - Short Sword +2
SW1H10 - Short Sword of Backstabbing
SW1H13 - Moonblade
SW1H15 - Scimitar +3, Frostbrand

SW2H01 - Two Handed Sword
SW2H02 - Two Handed Sword +1
SW2H03 - Two Handed Sword, Berserking
SW2H06 - Spider's Bane

and this item list of BG1 with TotSC  http://db.gamefaqs.com/computer/doswin/file/baldurs_gate_c.txt         :

ONE HANDED SWORDS:

      SW1H01 - Bastard Sword
      SW1H02 - Bastard Sword +1
      SW1H03 - Bastard Sword +1, Shapeshifters
      SW1H04 - Long Sword
      SW1H05 - Long Sword +1
      SW1H06 - Long Sword +2
      SW1H07 - Short Sword
      SW1H08 - Short Sword +1
      SW1H09 - Short Sword +2
SW1H10 - Short Sword of Backstabbing
SW1H11 - Odd Flame Sword (Creature Attack?)
      SW1H12 - Hull's Long Sword
      SW1H13 - Moonblade
      SW1H14 - Short Sword +1
      SW1H15 - Scimitar +3, Frostbrand
      SW1H16 - Scimitar +5, Defender
      SW1H17 - Perdue's Short Sword
      SW1H18 - Sword of Balduran
      SW1H19 - The Vampire's Revenge (cursed)
      SW1H20 - Scimitar
      SW1H21 - Short Sword
      SW1H22 - Scimitar +1
      SW1H23 - Scimitar +2
      SW1H24 - Long Sword +1, Flame Tongue

      TWO HANDED SWORDS:

      SW2H01 - Two Handed Sword
      SW2H02 - Two Handed Sword +1
SW2H03 - Two Handed Sword, Berserking
SW2H05 - Two Handed Sword (no image)
      SW2H06 - Spider's Bane
      SW2H07 - Two Handed Sword +3
      SW2H08 - Two Handed sword +2

I think you will see, that sw1h18 to sw1h24 are swords of TotSC. (the one-handed swords 11,12,14,16 and 17 could be in the latest official BG1 patch perhaps, beacause I have them too, allthough I haven't TotSC) but I'm not really sure. I hope this can help you

I copied all the *.itm files that were in  BG2\tutufix\backup\0\   into the BG2\override folder

see   http://forums.pocketplane.net/index.php?topic=17990.0

seems to work.

P.S. sorry to post in 2 threads, but I think there are some people who don't have TotSC and have the same problems maybe. so they could find it more easily.

Copying files from the "backup" folder means it's copying back the old versions of the files, not the ones that are being patched.

yeah, but there was the only place I found the missing items to complete the core bugfixes installation.
I re-installed BG2 and tried it this way, but now my diary doesnt work anymore.
so forget my way of solving this problem.

the best solution would be, to have TotSC, I think. but it seems that it is too old, because I cant find it in the shops anymore.

Tales of the Sword Coast on its own is likely only to be found second-hand, such as at eBay.

Interplay (or whoever) repackaged the original Baldur's Gate game along with TotSC together not long ago and released it as a packaged called "The Original Saga."  You might be able to find that still sold retail at a large computer store or an online store.  Personally, it's what I own, and what I would recommend, as the game was whittled down to 3 CDs (as opposed to 5 or 6), includes the official patch already installed, and comes with a bonus CD of the BG1 soundtrack.  Well worth whatever is paid for it.

Since that list is really long and I wanted to verify my installation for sure, I created a small .vbs script that verifies the existence of these files. Maybe someone may have a use for it, so I thought I'd share the code. I didn't evaluate which version of vbs is required, you'll just need to try it out.

Copy&paste it into notepad; you will need to change the line where the Baldur's Gate Data dir is defined (conBGDataDir) to the correct value for your system. Furthermore if you don't have Tales of the Sword Coast installed, you'll need to set conHaveTotSC to False in the next line. Now save the file as VerifyBGInstall.vbs and execute it on a commandline by using the call

cscript.exe VerifyBGInstall.vbs

It will give you a result saying either "Your installation appears to be complete." or "One or more files are missing, check your installation!"

Here's the code, have fun..  ;)

Can you find a file called narrat.cre in your BG1 installation?

Use NearInfinity or Infinity Explorer.

I've missing the same files that you are. We seem to have exactly the same problem (http://forums.pocketplane.net/index.php?topic=18904.0). These files are not part of the BG1 installation as far as I can tell. Something else is going on here, and it seems to involve BGII-SOA.

Carfesh, it would be extremely useful it your program would tell you what files are missing.

The script does tell you which files are missing; it may be that you need to scroll up a little, the missing files are prefixed with a - surprise  :) - "Missing file:" tag.

If you comment out/delete the line near the end reading
WScript.Echo "Found file: " & strBIFFileName
it will be easier to see the files that are missing.

 ;D

Here's what I get:

Missing file: G:\Games\Black Isle\Baldur's Gate\data\AREA1000.bif

Odd, I'm just missing that one file apparently.  What CD is it suppose to be on? We need an index for this.

Thanks for the program carfesh!

I don't have one available right now to check it, but since the file is listed unter the Tales of the Sword Coast files, I suppose you'll find it on that CD?

One small thing: wouldn't it be smart to directly implement such a script (perhaps with small modifications if needed) *directly* into the TuTu Fixpacks from now on ? It would make everything simpler and people wouldn't need to copy paste anything... ;D After all this is what I suggested with my first post in here!   :D

AREA100A.bif is on the Tostc CD, so you might want to update your list.

I agree with Salk, this should really be part of the Tutufix update ...or better yet... something that runs before you install BG1Tutu.

If I keep coming back here like this, I might have to register.  :P

Do you have TotSC installed, or no?

If not, that would explain things for us, and a temporary solution you can do is open up setup-tutufix.tp2 in a text editor, such as wordpad, and find the line that deals with _ar0130.bcs and comment it out by using /* at the start and */ at the end.  Here's an example of how it should look:

/*
// Alora crash
COPY_EXISTING ~_ar0130.bcs~ ~override~
DECOMPILE_BCS_TO_BAF
 REPLACE_TEXTUALLY ~IF
   TimeGT(20)
   Exists("Alora")
THEN
   RESPONSE #100
      Activate("Alora")
END

IF
   TimeLT(4)
   Exists("Alora")
THEN
   RESPONSE #100
      Activate("Alora")
END

IF
   TimeGT(4)
   TimeLT(20)
   Exists("Alora")
THEN
   RESPONSE #100
      Deactivate("Alora")
END~ ~IF
   OR(2)
      TimeGT(20)
      TimeLT(4)
   Exists("Alora")
   Global("J#AloraInactive","GLOBAL",1)
THEN
   RESPONSE #100
      SetGlobal("J#AloraInactive","GLOBAL",0)
      Activate("Alora")
END

IF
   TimeGT(4)
   TimeLT(20)
   Exists("Alora")
   Global("J#AloraInactive","GLOBAL",0)
THEN
   RESPONSE #100
      SetGlobal("J#AloraInactive","GLOBAL",1)
      Deactivate("Alora")
END~
COMPILE_BAF_TO_BCS
BUT_ONLY_IF_IT_CHANGES
*/

I don't understand, what does my problem have to do with _ar0130.bcs?  _ar0130.bcs isn't part of the list on the first page of this thread. No one ever mentioned _ar0130.bcs before.
Where's _ar0130.bcs suppose to go?  There's no _ar0130.bcs on my Totsc CD either.

I have BG1 installed fully, and am only missing the stared bif files, which is OK because I dont have ToSC installed.  When I try to install BGTUTU I recieve the following errors among others:

Failure("resource [ar0400.BCS] not found"): resource not found in source: ar0400
[...]
Failure("resource [ar0401.BCS] not found"): resource not found in source: ar0401
[...]

Both BG1 and BG2:ToB are up to date.
Does anyone know what could be the problem?

There is no problem. Ignore errors like this during Tutu install, they are really full feedback reports of the conversion process than errors. As long as the Tutu conversion finishes then you're okay. It's Tutufix that can have the real issues with non-TotSC installs and obviously this is something the makers really want to fix*.

*Actually I'm almost certain they'd prefer everybody to be using TotSC, but since that's not going to happen...

I have all those files, nothing missing.  Tutu seems to have installed, but fix pack won't.  it says:

Boolean lexer error at line 2 column 1-3
near text e (with a thingy over it)
invalid character (e) (with a thingy over it)

also says,

missing ar2600.bcs.BAF

also says,

Cannot set 2DA Entry

Thanks in advance for any help...

So when i get alot of

Failure("resource [ar4904.bcs (and lots of other bcs files)] not found"): resource not found in source: ar4904

there is no problem? :-\

Exactly.
An area (like AR4904) may have a script attached to it (that would be AR4904.BCS), but that is optional. When Tutu converts an area, it automatically looks for the area script; as many areas don't have one, Tutu reports an error.
Which doesn't hurt in itself, but makes recognizing *real* errors harder... :)

The only bif files I am missing are AREA260a, AREA2600 and AREA2700, all on CD1. Yet when I try and copy them over both data folders stop responding and I have to use task manager to close them down.  ??? ???

Any ideas on how to solve this problem?

I found WinBiff here:

(The other link provided seemed wrong)

I'm going to try installing Tutu this way.. it's all experience and knowledge.

I tried reinstalling easytutu to fix the huge spawn problem, but now I annot install BG1 fully.

For some reason, the installer won't uncompress area2100.cbf. I can copy it around, but I don't know how to extract. How do I get the BIF file out of it? WinBiff doesn't let you open just one CBF file...

I think my area2100.cdf is corrupted. Could you give a list of md5s so we can check it is proper? This is the checksum on mine:

tutufix says it cant find _Narrat.cre
Could anyone advise

I was having the same problem, but I just solved it. I thought I'd post how so that if there are any problems, I could undo it before I got too far along.

Basically, what I did was use TeamBG tools to extract Narrat.cre from my BGI game (I'm sure lots of other programs would work, too), then renamed it _narrat.cre and put it in the Tutu override folder.

If anyone sees a potential problem with this, please let me know.

Ahoy all, I'm trying to install Tutu onto my BG1 (no expansion) with BG2 (SoA) and getting the following errors:

I did a custom install with all clicked, and have no idea what I should do to remedy this situation.  I hope its not my CD's.

NPCSound.bif is the required one.  The rest are TotSC-specific and therefore optional.  See if you can't locate the file on your BG1 CDs and copy it manually.
