Title: Install Order for BG2
Post by: Kish on September 02, 2004, 06:37:30 PM
If you have Throne of Bhaal:

1) Install Shadows of Amn.
2) Install Throne of Bhaal, if applicable.  DO NOT install the Shadows of Amn patch.
3) Install the Throne of Bhaal patch (http://www.bioware.com/games/throne_bhaal/support/patches/).
4) Install the Baldurdash fixpack for Throne of Bhaal (http://www.baldurdash.org/ToB/Fixes/TOBfixes.html).
5) Install up to one non-WeiDU mod.
6) Install any desired WeiDU mods.
7) Play.

If you do not have Throne of Bhaal:
1) Install Shadows of Amn.
2) Install the Shadows of Amn patch (http://www.bioware.com/games/shadows_amn/support/patches/).  DO NOT install the Shadows of Amn patch if you have Throne of Bhaal.
3) Install the Baldurdash fixpack for Shadows of Amn (http://www.baldurdash.org/fixes.html).
4) Install up to one non-WeiDU mod.
5) Install any desired WeiDU mods.
6) Play.

wow, that is great, i just printed this out for quick reference.  i just have one question, and its probably a dumb one, but here goes...... i have been downloading some new kits, where do they fit in, and how can i tell if a mod is wiedu or not? (to be honest, im not really sure what weidu means) sorry if this is a stupid question, but im not good technically.
thanks.  ???

WeiDU stands for the Weimer Dialog Utilities and is what alot of modders use to make reversible changes to the game.

Generally, if you take a look at the readmes included with the mods, they will proudly declare their WeiDUness. :)

Our modlist should also point out specifically which mods are non-WeiDU.

Is there a specific order the WeiDU mods need to be installed in?  Or can they go in any order?

For the most part, yes, WeiDU mods are compatible and install order is unimportant. First and foremost, read the readmes. :) Mod authors generally have the best list of incompatibilities for their mods and whether there are any install order requirements.

Another good rule of thumb for WeiDU mod install order is to install older mods first; mods that are created later may either build upon or alter content in older mods. Mods such as tweak packs (G3 Tweaks and Ding0 Tweaks for example) should go near the end as they modify content in the game and from other mods. Virtue is designed to be installed last.

Again, though, these are only guidelines. The readmes for the mods are your best source of information.

If you have Throne of Bhaal:  DO NOT install the Shadows of Amn patch.

ah.  would that explain why the virtue, turnip golem, and u.b.'s restored minor dialogs were the only things that didn't install properly?
which would mean i must needs wipe it and start over?  this was all fresh, i hadn't played on this machine yet.

or would it actually be helpful to send simding, icelus and ghreyfain the .debug files?
i figured i'd ask here first since y'all seem to pop in frequently enough, it might be saving the Time...

Installing the SoA patch with ToB can explain any number of problems, and the cure is to uninstall everything and start over.

i was lulled by the confidence of baldurdash's latest (final?) fixpack in not needing to adjust - i mean, i certainly didn't install the soa patch AFTER installing tob...
  okay, here goes... *yawn* dammit.

As for inter-WeiDU install order, I can think of a few things off the top of my head:

- Virtue last
- Imoen after Tashia (I believe, might be the other way around  ;))
- Kelsey after Solaufein

Furthermore, I find it useful to install mods like Tactics near the end, since I regularly (relatively) install and uninstall components from those mods. The same applies to any mod that is still under development, like UB.

so - the sorcerers' fixpack 1.2 touts weidu compatibility, but it's only for soa... is it therefore no good to we implementing tob from the outset?  (is their fixpack just as big a nono in the above sequence as the baldurdash soa fixpack?)

It should be said that after installing the game and patching, before putting on any mods, to make a copy of the override and dialog.tlk. That way, if something goes wrong, you don't have to do the uninstall/reinstall routine.

Edit by Ghreyfain: Might as well include chitin.key and bgmain.exe among the files to be patched.  They're modified by fewer mods out there, but it pays to be thorough.
Title: soundsets...
Post by: Reverendratbastard on October 11, 2004, 04:19:34 PM
i couldn't find a thread for this, probably because it's too obvious (and relatively not often an issue), and figured it didn't need its own thread:

the couple of soundsets i am considering implementing (both for non-bioware NPCs) don't seem to have instructions on an extraction destination directory.

[bg2install]/sounds?  or somewhere slightly less obvious?

(is it only bioware-NPC sound mods that go in override?  as far as sound mods go - i was assuming they keep to themselves if they are not directly augmenting already-extant locations etc.)

If they are soundsets that you assign to a player character during character creation or via the Customize button in-game, they go into the \sounds\ directory.

and otherwise, they should have their own folder in root?  (right now i'm deliberating on kiara-zaiya, i haven't come to the other i [thought i] was considering)

NPC sounds get thrown in the override.  ;)

Patched? I assume you mean copied.

Ahaha, that's what I get for trying to be clever.  Yeah, copied, backed up, whatever.  They should be backed up because some mods patch them.  Yeah.

They should be backed up because some mods patch them.  Yeah.

i'm presuming that those who have the savvy to make an extensive cross-reference of such things... are busy creating and debugging and other real work.  (or actually having to make some money.)
  i volunteer for the post.
for that yet-distant time when my mind has the means...

Hey guys im new here and i got a question.  I just started doing the mod thing but ive played BG for a while now.....Well my problem is after i install my mods no more talking occurs and by that i mean no more npc talking such as aerie wont start talkin  so no romance can occur or anything else. The mods i install are these in this order

TOB offical patch
Baldurdash Gamefixes and then the text updates
Banter Pack
NPC Flirt Pack
Ascension
Redemption or Longer Road i tried them both
unfinished buisness
Quest pack
Virtue

thats it and its in that order..........any thoughts or suggestions?

We determined that nothing was wrong, the player just hadn't reached Chapter 2 yet, which is where the banter and lovetalks kick in.

anyone know somewhere other than bioware to download the official patch?  I've tried linking from several different sites (incl this one) as well as typing the address, and keep getting "cannot find server".  (I think their site is down as I managed to get the fixpack from weidu/baldurdash)  how badly do i need it anyway- actually, my roommate wants to play it on his computer and I don't think he'll get too far, certainly not beyond the first round of quests (tonight).  So does he really need the patch?  I make however, no allowances for the sudden rise of a new addiction once he starts playing.  So he might need it eventually, huh?

Wait, can't I just install the patches whenever (mid-game) or am I misremembering?

thanks for listening...

cheers.

cheers

If you have Throne of Bhaal:

1) Install Shadows of Amn.
2) Install Throne of Bhaal, if applicable.  DO NOT install the Shadows of Amn patch.
3) Install the Throne of Bhaal patch.
4) Install the Baldurdash fixpack for Throne of Bhaal.
5) Install up to one non-WeiDU mod.
6) Install any desired WeiDU mods.
7) Play

Why only one non-WeiDU mod, praytell?
Title: Re: Install Order for BG2

Because if it's not a WeiDU mod, then it will overwrite the dialog.tlk instead of appending to it.  If you apply more than one non-WeiDU mod, then all the text, including dialogs, for the previous mods will be destroyed.
