Ah well I've had it confirmed - there is hardly any music in IWD2.  Definitely a disappointment to be sure but at least I know the installation is fine and there are no corrupt files or whatnot.

Thanks for the help

So there isn't supposed to be music in most of the areas in IWD2?

In the first 3 town areas (docks, town, palliside) there is wandering music.  The palliside area also had scripted battle music.  Other than that, I have not had any music in any other areas of the game, battle or non.

Areas supposed to have a song header. NI or DLTCEP can show you them.
I believe you don't hear music because IWD2 areas don't have the battlesong set.

I'm not even sure how to check that.  But so far, outside of the scripted paliside battle, I haven't gotten any battle music.  Not for the docks, the river wilderness area, the dam wilderness area, or the goblin fortress exterior.  I just find it strange - there is supposed to be battle music in at least some of those areas right? I have battle music for BG, BG2, and Planescape - they're the same engine so they must have some similarities.

Have you checked if the area in question has battlemusic set?

Yes, you're right.  Using the makeshift music.2da file I was able to receive wilderness music for the first few wilderness areas however I went back to town where I received the same 'wilderness' music in the Weeping inn...

I don't know what the problem is at all.  I've reinstalled 4 times total, trying recommended and full installs.  I could understand if there was no wilderness music (it's a vacant snowy landscape right?) but there's no music for generic battles.

removing lines from the file isn't really recommended.
I believe it would shift music.

IWD2 doesn't seem to be installing or working properly in this area.  For some reason a lot of the music in the game doesn't start when it's supposed.  The title music, first village music, scripted battle music in the first village all worked but generic battle music never starts (complete silence...) and up until last night the first wilderness music (Shaengarne Ford (AR 2000)) didn't work.  I've reinstalled 4 times now, trying both recommended (1 gb) and full (1.5 gb) installs with no difference in whether the music is triggered or not.  While unpatched, the game crashes almost instantly after loading the first area.

Basically, I'm trying to create a functioning music.2da file for the game so that ALL the music starts at each trigger (whether the trigger is an area or battle, etc.).  Before I go any further, essentially what I'm looking for are the exact proper names for each trigger and its accompanying .mus file.

I looked in IWD2's 2da.bif file (in the Data directory) then searched for .mus.  There was one list in there for .mus and triggers/areas.  I copied that to make a music.2da file (which I place in the Override folder).  Keeping only that original .mus list did nothing for the music (although it did slow the game down I found).  So I modified the .mus list by deleting all references to .mus files that didn't exist in the Music directory.  After I did that, the wilderness music (Shaengarne Ford (AR 2000)) started as soon as I loaded my save game in that area.  But the generic battle music still does not start.

Here is my original music.2da file - everything was copied just as it was from the 2da.bif file.  Even the references to .mus files that don't exist in the game's music directory.  I have highlighted every thing that I deleted for the revised music.2da file.

I tried renaming all the battle trigger names from 'BattleX' to 'BX' and that didn't change anything.  If anyone can give me the proper trigger names with accompanying .mus files to point to... I'd be very happy :D  Playing without fight music stinks :(

I did find it interesting that IWD2's 2da.bif file has remnants of BG and BG2 inside it (and likely other IE games as well) - lists with character names from those games.  That's why I'm guessing that I have to edit the trigger + .mus list.
