Tougher Yaga-Shura crash
« on: September 10, 2002, 08:05:03 PM »
I was fighting the impoved Yaga-Shura when (after about two minutes of continuous combat) the game crashed back to windows. This was just after Yaga-Shura himself appeared and his mage cast Time Stop. It looks like something related to low resources, but I highly doubt that - system specs:

Windows 2000
900MHz PIII
256MB RAM
GeForce2

Plus, I am running the game at a lower resolution because it looks better. I tried the fight again, and it worked just fine. Any ideas on why this would happen?

Hmm, do you have Spell50 installed?

No. I have a host of WeiDU mods installed, but not Spell50. (List of mods: Original Baldurdash, all components of Ascension, Valen, Kelsey, Tashia, Improved Ilyich, the Ritual, Item Upgrade; all of Solafein except Mindflayers, some of Ease of Use).

Goto the BG config and set ALL the extra features to the lowest settings. Turn of 3d acceleration, turn of the glows turn off all the memory using spell effects.

That should stop the game from crashing

It happened on mine too
P4
1.7 GH
256 DDR
Geforce 4
And still it crashed  :o  :o

What?! Look, if it crashed on a P4, then it probably is either not resource related or some weird issue where no matter how good your computer is, it will still crash (memory drain?). It worked the next time I tried it - there is no need to set the settings low (makes the game look bad).

This used to happen to me every time I did the fight, I had to uninstall improved Yaga Shura in the end.

Part of the original readme file from Dave Gaider:

One caution: a couple of times crashes were reported soon after Yaga-Shura re-appears.  I was not able to verify if this was due to a specific bug or due to too much graphic overload, but it does seem to be rare regardless."

I have a crappy (really crappy) pc with PII 350 and a geforce MX , 192 Mo RAM, and it still works fine with settings set for a pc around 450 Mhz.
So this must be a bug of some sort.

Man, 5 years later I'm running ToB on 2 gigs of ram and a 256mb video card and the game _still_ crashes.

Eureka, found the bloody thing (I think). And it's nothing to do with system capabilities.

The Lieutenant Thief (yaga05.cre) has got darts of stunning in his quiver rather than his weapon slot. When he tries to equip a ranged weapon (which happens on a random basis) it causes the game to crash.

Workaround: dump the following file

http://users.ox.ac.uk/~mert0130/YAGA05.CRE

in your override directory after installing Ascension.

Users of SCSII: I'll fix this in the SCSII Ascension component.

~ysmage01.cre~  also has dart02.itm in his quiver and not in a weapon slot.

updated both yaga05.cre and ysmage01.cre to move the darts into unused weapon slots in the revamped .tp2

Is the last version of Ascension updated with these fixes, or should I download another file?

No, the last version of Ascension is not updated with these fixes, but you can get these fixes and this one of DavidW through our BiG World Fixpack.

Thank you Leomar!
But now you got me interested, what is exactly the BiG World Project? I have seen the links for the files, but I can't find any documentation or announcement

It's not a mod, but a mod combination that covers every WeiDU mod in town(except IA) that can be mega-moded(combined), and the documentation is in the download .pdf files, in this exactly.

Edit: ups! Well, I fixed the link.

Jarno, your link goes to the BW Textpack.

On this page, you get all the BWP stuff. The pdf downloads are the manuals.
