A Question of Class
« on: September 03, 2002, 06:53:36 PM »
I just beat Improved Irenicus and now crushing all opposition in Saradush.  It won't  be long before I face Ascension with my fighter dualled to a mage. I'm already looking forward to my next game and would appreciate your feedback on which character to play with the Weimer mods.  I mean playing with Ascension, Ease of Use,  Item Upgrade and, of course, Solaufein.  In particular, I play with the additional tactical encounters, the smarter dragons, beholders and vampires and improved mind flayers, Bodhi and Irenicus installed.  Have these mods made certain PC classes obsolete?

I would like to know if anyone has gone through the game with the Weimer mods installed and enjoyed playing with a cleric or maybe a thief?  I'm afraid to start a new game and have that PC become the weak link in the chain.  I can see it now.  Solaufein, Minsc and Jaheira killing enemy after enemy.  Imoen spell casting up a storm and my thief hiding in shadows until the fight is over.  I can only imagine going one on one with Irenicus the Slayer with a thief or cleric.  Tough challenge or an impossible task? Again, I'd love to get some feedback and maybe some pointers from someone playing a cleric or a thief with the weimer mods installed.

Well i'm playing through with an Assasin who's just been duelled to a fighter...And i'm enjoying it...I don't think it's made any classes obsolete.

Not sure of a single classed thief tho, and a Cleric can be a killing machine with the right spells so i wouldn't worry too much about being the weak link.

Thief's suffer a bit in general in bg2 and more so in ToB.

Everyone has Immunity to backstab (bah, assassination), and almost any other partial thief can find the traps/etc in ToB with the skill boosting items.

And most of the traps just aren't too useful...

This is really more so a problem with ToB/BG2 than not.  There's a reason most every thief mod coming out is based around either multiclass or allowing the potential to dual class (usually into a fighter).

We've had reports that Solo Thief is tricky against Imp Irenicus. Don't forget that you can turn into the slayer. Set some traps in advance.

Solo Cleric would be much easier -- you have all those spells. Summon a deva before he gets there or something.

While I would like to take total credit for pushing mono-class thieves and clerics to the back burner, it's really that the tougher battles force you to use the AD&D rules to their best advantage. And AD&D as presented in BGII is an ill-balanced system. If you actually had chances to climb walls and whatnot, thieves would be more useful. If you had interpretive and non-standard answers to prayers and requests for DI, clerics would be more interesting. As it stands ... they're both sub-optimal in BGII.
