Arithar's Add-On - Druidic Store Items
« on: May 18, 2004, 10:39:43 PM »
Hey guys, I spent all last evening conceiving these items for my mod. I'd appreciate any input.

All of these items, unless otherwise noted, are usable by all druids (and only druids).

Robe of the Woodlands
AC = 4
Freedom

-1 to casting time

Robe of the Great Druid - requires level 14
AC = 1

Mask of the Woodlands

Immune to charm and confusion
-1 to casting time

Bracers of the Woodlands
Regenerate 1 hp/ 10 sec

THAC0 : +4
Melf's Acid Arrow 2x a day

Sling of the Forest
Requires no bullets - does 1d6 damage (enchanted as +1)
THAC0 : +2

Wooden Collar
+3 AC bonus vs. slashing and piercing
-1 Dexterity
+8 HP
Regenerate 1 hp/ 15 sec

Scimitar of the Lake
1d10+3
THAC0 : +4
30% chance of slaying fire elementals and efreeti
+1 attack per round

Claw of the Panther - dagger
1d6+2 / 70% chance of 5 additional slashing damage
THAC0 : +3
+1 Dexterity

Spear of the Panther
1d8+3 / +4 slashing damage
THAC0 : +5
Attacks per round set to 3

Eagle Darts
1d4+1 / 25% chance of +3 piercing damage
THAC0 : +5

Amulet of the Panther
+2 THAC0
Cast Blindness 3x a day
Cast Invisibility 2x a day

Cloak of the Panther
+25 resistance to piercing
+2 to all saving throws
Immune to fear

Skin of the Panther - leather armor
AC = 3

I haven't taken a terribly detailed look at it since I'm half asleep here, but imagine what a character would be like if they had all this gear on?

immune to poison
-4 casting time
+2 spells per level
freedom
immune to charm
regeneration
immune to confusion
regeneration again
+5 to all saves
regeneration (supar fast)
immune to fear
regeneration for the fourth time :)
30% resistance to all elemental damage

I didn't check to see if multiple items of the same type are equipped (i.e. three amulets, heheh), but step back and look at how powerful all this is when combined.

As it is, there're only two items in the game that decrease casting speed.  Vecna's Robe, and the Amulet of Power.  Now, I figure the robe is ultra cheesy and wouldn't even bother counting it in a decision on game balance.  In my opinion, ONE item that gives -1 to casting speed would be cool.

Also, those robes give pretty hefty AC bonuses, along with some other snazzy stuff.  Then the Panther items wind up giving a massive THAC0 bonus, so the druid could basically go toe-to-toe with a fighter.

Last but not least, the renegeration could get pretty insane, especially with a shapeshifter (they get a crazy con bonus, don't they?  When in greater wolfwere/werewolf or whatever it is?)

So yeah, don't let my feedback get you down.  Lots of this stuff looks pretty nifty, as long as they wind up having some good background stories.  Don't go foisting any of those ToB-esque "this weapon = supar kewl.  it has no history, dood." descriptions off on us.

Some good ideas there :).

I notice you have an item, specifically the Spirit Bracers, which are only usable by a certain kit.  I trust you realise the only usability flags in BG2 are for alignment, class and race, not kit? One way you could get around this is to run a script which turns Totemic Druids into Gnomes (which obviously a Druid normally couldn't be), then changes their avatar, race title and abilities back to their original race (i.e.) Human or Half-Elf) - then you'd just make your item only usable by Gnomish Druids.

Quite a bit of work for just one item though ;).

Hmm? BG2 does have kit usability flags... doesn't it?

Yeah, but they're ignored unless the class as a whole can use the item. There's no way to make an item usable by a druid kit without allowing it to be used by a generic druid.

Unless my cheap hack method is used ;).

EDIT: ignore my earlier post, I'm talking nonsense. That'll teach me to use InfExp rather than a proppa moddarz tool ::).  But yeah, you couldn't have an item usable by a kit and not the regular class unless you use the jiggery-pokery method I previously mentioned, or a different screwy method which involves turning a True Class into a kit and stuff.

It can be done; I did it for SPC. I changed kitted clerics to use the same flag as trueclass clerics, then used the "extra" cleric kit flags I had freed up for different kits and classes. But it's an extremely hacky method and I would not recommend using it for, like, anything.

First - I plan on having very good descriptions, just didn't have the time to write them out.
Second - I tried to make things as balanced as I could. Max would be -3 to casting time, but that isn't that uber if you consider that Druidic spells take longer to cast than most mage spells
Third - Yes, I can make items usable by only specific kits in IEEP. I've done it before.

Also, if you have any way to make the items less over-powered, I'd welcome comments. Please.

Usable by only a specific kit and a kitless member of that class you mean ;).  Or if you do know how to make an item which is only usable by Shapeshifters and not true class Druids, please let us know! :)

As for overpoweredness, one way to make items which aren't over-powered is to take an existing item that's intended for another class, then add a Druidic twist to it, whilst at the same time trying to keep its abilities at the same sort of power level.  For example:

Robe of the Arch-Magi:

Armor Class: 5
Magic Resistance: 5%
Saving Throw: +1 bonus
Usable By:
Mage

becomes Robe of the Arch Druid:

Armor Class: 5
Fire Resistance:  5%
Cold Resistance: 5%
Saving Throw: +1 bonus
Usable By:
Druid

Circlet of Netheril:

+10 to maximum Hit Points
Memorize one additional 7th and 8th level spell
Usable By:
Mage

Becomes Crown of the High Forest:

+5 to maximum Hit Points
Memorize two additional 6th and 7th level spells
Usable By:
Druid

Not as badly as you may think considering the number of level 6 and 7 spells that high level druids get.  As long as the item is only obtainable in the ToB part of the game it shouldn't be too bad.

How is it more overpowered than the Circlet of Netheril? I'd take one extra 7th & 8th level mage spells over two extra 6th & 7th druid spells anyday.

To me, the robes were not that overpowered. If you consider that _most_ druids can also wear metal armor which can have a base AC of 0, the robes protect nicely.

I could up the base AC of the robes by 1 or 2, making the RObe of the Woodlands have AC : 5 and the Robe of the Great Druid have AC : 3?

Also, maybe I am mistaken. If worst comes to worst, I can make the Spirit Bracers usable by all druids.

I really like tha Crown of the High Forest, but I would change it to be +1 spells of 5, 6, and 7.

Also, I did some figuring of my own, and here's the powerful druid I came up with :

AC = 3 (after I change it
Freedom
+20 fire/acid/cold/lightning resistance
-3 to casting time (robe and amulet)
+2 spells - all levels (robe and amulet)
+1 Wisdom
Infravision
Immune to normal weapons
-10 to hp
Regenerate 1 hp/ 6 sec
+1 to Constitution
+5 to all saving throws
+25 resistance to piercing
Immune to fear
+10 universal resistance

This doesn't seem too overpowered when I look over it. I have two regenerating amulets and two regenerating bracers. I also have other amulets, so it's the player's choice for the regeneration. I might add another set of bracers. Also, since druids fight like sissies (hehe), they need all the THAC0 help they can get.

Wooden Bracers
+15 crushing resistance
+1 Strength

I also will probably add more level requirements for the items, as well as higher dexterity requirements for the panther items. That way, you won't have a level 8 druid running around kicking Firky's ass. (But wouldn't that be COOL!!) This store will be found in the druid grove, outside of the "challenge hall".
