And quite a tip of the hat it was, 30-odd posts by the people who actually run the place accusing me of rigging it.

Rigging it how, JC? Preferring certain people over others? IIRC, you advertised IM3 in several places and personally sent offers to people (*coughWeimercough*) inviting them to participate. Just because most of the 8 entries came from people at PPG doesn't mean the contest is rigged. It means other people were lazy. If NotMrT and other people wanted to squawk about how unfair it was, they should have written a mod and submitted it themselves. THEN they'd have the right to complain.

(Hey, if I can make a store and storekeeper in four hours, anyone can do it. Trust me on this one. ;))

Rigging a contest that has no price money? What's the point? I am at a loss here.

Honor and glory...and a pirate-themed avatar, it seems. (The Pancake Pirate will live on in memory...as soon as I fix this item to work properly, that is...)

I'm accepting suggestions. Especially given the rather unusual outcome of the contest I'm tempted to schedule the next one relatively soon... say, mid/late July. But it's important to know how much time contestants feel they need to recharge, and for those who missed this one or haven't yet participated, what would suit them best.

I say the last weekend in July, and announce it well in advance. The more juvenile among us (me! *raises hand high*) can post on FWMC and say that IM4 is on such-and-such date and on such-and-such time, and participation is encouraged to ensure Chairman Kaga isn't rigging the contest against those who do not participate.

And well done Pirengle, for becoming a m0ddar!  ;D

Thank you, my sous-chef, for writing my .tp2 file and putting up with my whining when Bons went off to write her own entry and JC ran off to do his official things. Without your assistance, I never would have finished.

I'm still a little twerked at the way things turned out. Someone explained it to me that what I did wasn't really a mod and I was stacked against other well-known and well-experienced folks, and that's why I didn't score so high. But hearing the Chairman himself say that what I had done was more of a demo or experiment or a quasi-mod than a real entry, that made me sad. Hey folks: first time. EVAR.

Maybe there can be some sort of Training Day competition for people who have never modded before and want to learn how. All the newbies cling to famous modmakers (like how I borrowed Andyr's help) and make something centered around a basic theme, maybe one of Weimer's one-word suggestions. Fun for the whole community.

of course, it does mean pirengle no longer has a soul  ;)

Nope. I'm thinking about taking my new-found prowess and asking for a forum at FWMC. I have a nice project in mind: a sex-starved female NE assassin. I figure somebody else will handle all the technical stuff while I have room to do what I want: lord over others in my own private forum.

;)
I've given up on the light of good.

It wasn't really about who participated, but who won.  Because Bons & Icelus won the contest, NotMrT (and others in that thread) inferred that the judges were horribly biased towards the PPG moderators and/or the votes of the judges other than JC counted for nothing.

Or worms who forget they live down the street from internet cafes. :)

Ha, well... um, I'd spent all the loot from previous raids earlier, so I couldn't afford four hours of internet cafe time.  That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

Commiserations Ghrey, maybe next time you'll reclaim your throne and hat? :)

I blame my sous-chef.  Also the fact that Jason rigged this contest the wrong way. :)

Speaking of next time, when the 4th Iron Modder will be?  8)

I say any time except the weekend of July 24th.  Got a trip to go on.

And quite a tip of the hat it was, 30-odd posts by the people who actually run the place accusing me of rigging it.

They're just jealous because PPG has the Iron Modder competition and TBG has its new weekly contest thing, but they have nothing.  There's an Amusing Modding Contest Gap!  Pretty soon we'll be sending in the ICBMs.

As much as I am happy for those who have won, I still fail to see the reason for the big buzz about it. Why it antagonises some people just escapes me. (Yes, glory and infamy, but hey). I would have posted that over at FW following Kismet's link, but it still doesn't like me. :(

UU is fairly impartial, if it doesn't come down to Jansens or turnips. ;)

What are ICBMs? I do not think every hamlet needs a king and not every forum needs a contest. Those who want to can of course. :)

Why are no more one-dayers produced?

They either deleted the thread or (more likely) moved it to a moderator only forum.

Funny you ask, in the past 24 hours three different people have told me they want to do a One-Day NPC.

ICBMs are inter-continental ballistic missiles.  That was a reference to Doctor Strangelove (fighting isn't allowed in the war room!).

(Gotta love the way controversial topics are handled over there--they don't get locked, they disappear entirely.)

Congratulations, Bons and Icelus!

yeah, i've noticed that...

bons does have a point...perhapse one word themes might get more people involved...and it would be "purer" to the concept...

and really since its open to anyone, FW should participate...or else not accuse anyone of rigging the contest.

and that's not something i'm happy about... >:( >:( >:(

and yes, jester, i can be impartial if no turnips were hurt during the making of this show... :D

yeah, like some sort of modder's workshop...

i'm sure a lot of people would like to learn to mod...

I like to think that we seem open and hospitable here, and if we open up some new area for new folks, we'll run into "too many forums" syndrome, where a lot of 'em will be underused.  Plus, you remember the big flop that was the TBG school, right?  None of the "teachers" had enough motivation to go through with it for very long.  I think if people really want to learn, they'll do it.

Emphasis on Training DAY, UUF.

I mentioned something to el cr0mpt0ni about doing it Junkyard Wars style. Have a day to plan (or teach) and a day to make. Pair newbie modmakers with older, experienced modmakers, and see what they come up with. Foster teamwork. That sort of thing.

Always there are two. A master, and a student. No more, no less.

EVAR.

I haven't gotten to look at the entries yet, but Pir, you made a mod. What's more, you had the guts to jump in, give it a shot, and you made something work. Alas, not the Pirate Pancakes (*sniff*), but still, you accomplished something that only a fraction of people have tried under the constraints of the Iron Modder competition. You go, girl!

All the newbies cling to famous modmakers (like how I borrowed Andyr's help) and make something centered around a basic theme, maybe one of Weimer's one-word suggestions. Fun for the whole community.

I suddenly had a vision of those workshops at Home Depot where people learn how to tile their bath in one Saturday morning. :)

You know, I think even with months and months of rehearsal, you're not really prepared for Iron Modder until you've done an Iron Modder. Until you're in the midst of that four-hour deadline, WeiDU spitting syntax errors right and left, scripts misfiring, typing with all the agility of a duck in boxing gloves, you can't really know what it's going to feel like. The competition itself is a learning process. Just think of all you picked up between Saturday and Sunday night, Pirengle. Just think how it felt when you installed your store for the first time. "I. Am Now. An Moddarz."

Flashback IM2, my slime bit was my first completed mod. I didn't finish in time to be a judged entry. I tried to do too much. I didn't manage my time well. The deadline came just as I was wrapping up my .tp2, little realizing it would take me a good two hours more to debug the thing so that it was remotely functioning. Yesterday, it was neriana and St. Jo who ran late. Next round, I bet they'll be smackdown steamrollers because they now know what to expect.

In other Iron Modder news... Ghrey, Ghrey, Ghrey: pirate, gentleman, icon of good sportsmanship, shedder of rum tears. I'm sure your graciousness in defeat will be a great comfort come Iron Modder 4, when you return to soundly kick our asses. :D

Newt had always suspected that people who regularly used the word "community" were using it in a very specific sense that excluded him and everyone he knew.

Which is what I would hope everybody would understand is the primary purpose of the exercise: making mods. Not to dimish those who currently wear, have worn, or wish to wear the Iron Pirate Hat, or to diminish the efforts of those who have judged the competition, but anybody out there who is looking at this as primarily an exercise about winning... is missing the point entirely. That anybody would suggest that I or any of the other judges have any interest at all in the specific outcome is really pitiful.

That I organize a time, create silly little theme phrases and throw pictures of Chairman Kaga around is merely the bait and the catalyst to trick people into getting more modding done.

As for other competition ideas, it's also been suggested that some sort of "rookies" category or special competition be created for Iron Modder. The trouble with that is, as Bons said, sometimes your first Iron Modder attempt just doesn't go the way you hoped, and I'm not exactly convinced that working under the tight deadline is the best way to do your first mod.

A Junkyard Wars/Training Day/Pro-Am type setup as Pirengle mentioned has a fair few challenges. I'm not saying it's impossible, but I am saying that I probably have enough things to organize that I personally am not going to organize it. :)
