I got a fair few comments from people noting that this theme tended to favor more serious, or at least less-jokey creations. Is this generally considered a Good Thing?

As I just said in chat, yes.  I had lots of fun in IM1 and 2, but the fact that I want to actually improve on my entry for IM3 probably adds weight to the pro-serious faction.

Not to say humour mods are no fun, though.  As the creator or co-creator of Goo, Turnip Golem, Kelsey, GhreySlimes, and my blatant theft of DWARFBAR, I can probably claim to be one of the premiere makers of sucktastic joke mods. :)

Here's another question.

One well-regarded modder who has never graced Iron Modder with his consideration (let's call him "Bestley") says that he believes the themes should be more single-word concepts (such as "honor", "disgrace", "antagonism") rather than the phrases they have been because he feels the phrases are too limiting.

Now, personally, I think the themes as they have been written have an awful lot of wiggle room to explore a lot of different concepts, not just one. But am I missing something here? Is Mr. "Beimer" expressing the view of a silent majority?

I don't really agree. Concepts like that are so wide that one could do virtually anything with them. I far prefer the themes as they are now.

Part of the challenge for me is coming up with an idea for a mod that fits the theme, which is quite a good bit of the fun.  If it's just one word, I can do basically anything I want, and if that's what I want to do... well, I can do that at any time, and we all know how motivated I am to do stuff that could take more than four hours.

I don't know.   I thought I'd throw out a really zany creation for its pure entertainment value as Ghrey did in the first contest, hehe... but apparently I am the only one still  laughing at the contents ;D    You announced the theme, and I was sitting at my computer eating Hershey's Kisses... and BAM (literally... I had to make three ;) ) the theme made perfect sense.  I am looking forward to playing the other entries.

Congrats  Bons and Icelus!!!!!

Well, you know I support stuff that can produce playable rather than one-time results. And yes, this one did. Apart from the gender bending and spectacular continuity error that the judges didn't pick up, Ghrey's was a fairly serious idea.

I think any of the IM themes could have been taken and made into a serious mod.  Blue's "Last Mug of Ale" entry was certainly serious.  My first thought for this theme was certainly "ooh, drama!" but then I quickly realized that I couldn't pull it off so went for light humor instead.  My original plan was for Korgan to "kiss" Mazzy with his axe, but I couldn't bring myself to do it.

Congrats to Bons & Icelus on winning!

If we're being Iron Chef  purists, this is a valid point. Kitchen Stadium would have a "Peach" Battle, rather than a "You're A Peach" Battle. In the case of "Some of My Best Friends Are Slimes," I don't think the entries would have been vastly different if the theme had simply been "Slime." In IM3, a theme of "Kiss" or "Dying" would have yielded different results than tag-teaming the concepts like "A Kiss Before Dying." A phrase can be a limiting qualifier, yes, but I don't think it's too limiting. After all, two times in a row, everyone's skipped/missed what you expected to be the obvious implementation choices, so there must be some wriggling room.
Newt had always suspected that people who regularly used the word "community" were using it in a very specific sense that excluded him and everyone he knew.

Thank you, everyone, though, as I said last night on chat just before tactfully slipping away--to me, personally, Originality counts for just a little bit more, so, in my mind, Bons is the true winner.

But I like hats, so I will gleefully don the one offered to me by the Iron Pirate.  :D

Congrats Bons and Icelus!

That said, I have to admit, ties leave a bad taste in my mouth.  The Iron Chef doesn't allow them, even though the judges are tired and stuffed and can barely see straight for all the sweet potato fritters, sweet potato gumbo and sweet potato kabobs they've endured.   We should have a tie-breaker!  I realize it's impractical and a lot of work and I'll be shouted down but it's just the way I feel.

There isn't even a tip-of-the-hat to IM on FWMC. Perhaps Kismet linked us to that one and only thread, which seems to have disappeared. (Gotta love the way controversial topics are handled over there--they don't get locked, they disappear entirely.)

Congratulations, Bons and Icelus!

I actually think people get a lot of leeway over there. Perhaps just some minor mishap, but what was it about? I do not read a lot about competitions from other boards at any board so there should not be to much behind this.

And quite a tip of the hat it was, 30-odd posts by the people who actually run the place accusing me of rigging it.

Rigging a contest that has no price money? What's the point? I am at a loss here.

I'm accepting suggestions. Especially given the rather unusual outcome of the contest I'm tempted to schedule the next one relatively soon... say, mid/late July. But it's important to know how much time contestants feel they need to recharge, and for those who missed this one or haven't yet participated, what would suit them best.
