Eurovision
« on: May 16, 2004, 04:18:29 AM »
Just wondering if anyone else was highly disturbed by the winning Eurovision song last night?  It was like a cross between Xena and the Cheeky Girls!  I think I'm scarred for life.

Awesome. I was sat down with a few people laughing at just how bad some of the entries were, and we did think that one was rather less crap than the others. Incidentally, does anyone know what the criteria for entry is, because it's pretty sad if this is meant to be the best music in Europe.

Is it true one of the entries was about a goat...?

Not sure about the goat thing, but the Ukraine's entry was horrific as were the entries of Poland, Russia, Turkey and Bosnia.  Not that the UK's was much better, but at least the guy could sing.

The voting this year was almost entirely on the basis of which countries border which - the music itself barely figured into it.

I unashamedly love and adore Eurovision. It's truly terrible but that's the beutry of it! I thought the winning song was OK, at least they put some effort into their performance unlike all those time two-a-penny male singers (most of whom wore white suits). Bland bland bland. Our entry was a little better than more of the bland male singers but that kinda crap hasn't won Eurovision for years. I liked the Greek entry as well, classic Eurovision pop crap, the Serbian entry was kinda nice because they made the effort to bring in some different musical instruments and had people with actual talent.

The Maltese entry...D: It was typical Euro Pop stuff until the Opera kicked in O.O WTF?

Madness. Glorious, glorious madness.

Oh, and Terry Wogan rocked as always <3

Terry Wogan is a genius.  Being a sarcy git as always, which is the best part of any eurovision competition  :)
I really liked the Serbian entry and the Cyprian one wasn't bad

Eurovision ranks alongside politicians, children's entertainers, paint thinner and balloon animals with regard to utter awfulness.

And so, IIDID avoided the horrific evidence of human? devolution that is Eurovision, and there was much rejoicing.

The Eurovision Song Contest is an international music competition held every year.  Every European Union country is represented by one contestant in various heats and 26 countries participate in the final.  These contestants are supposed to be fabulous musicians, but have an unfortunate habit of sucking.

And for some bizarre reason a few non-European countries, f.ex Israel.

yeah, I'd never really thought of Russia as being European either.  But then again, Israel isn't exactly an Asian country either.  Perhaps it should be called the Eurasianvision Song Contest

So who won this year?

It's sometimes difficult to remember when it comes to the border countries.

I could be wrong, but I believe Russia is in both Europe and Asia - mostly the latter though.

Which is why I get confused.  If I'm not sure I just say Eurasia, since it's all one big landmass anyway.  It's difficult to tell with Slavic  countries.  They're kind of a separate entity altogether.

Eurasia is also one of the superstates in '1984'. Including Israel is a bit of a stretch, but after overcoming their xenophopic tendencies the Europeans might as well include the whole Mediterranean and then Israel makes more sense. Israel is to a large extend a European implant into the region.

Geographically Europe ends at the Ural range IIRC. So Russia is one of the bigger European states in that sense.

And for political reasons - in a Near Eastern contest, Israeli participants might not be welcome everywhere. ;)
With the European influences on Israeli culture, Europe is really the most logical solution, if they want to take part in such a contest at all.
