Interplay is currently "evaluati[ng]... strategic alternatives designed to enhance value to Interplay's shareholders." This usually means "we can't hack it the way things are going, so we're gonna have to sell out or something."

Interplay's situation has long been unique (read: stupid) because of the way they mortgaged themselves to Titus which eventually took over the company. In the announcement and in last week's conference call, they're still talking about hanging around as a going concern, but I have a hard time figuring out what their business model is supposed to be. Interplay is neither studio nor publisher nor distributor any longer--they're basically just a middleman between studios and Vivendi which now does their actual publishing and distribution, and that's a tricky way to make money.

Thanks for all the background info, but from what I read in your post Interplay does not have a real excuse to exist any further anyways other than as a logo.

And a source of intellectual property, yes. Certainly the Fallout, IWD and Torment brands have some sort of value. I don't know if Interplay controls some of the older notable titles it published, such as Out Of This World/Another World.

...hell, if they still had the rights to Neuromancer or other William Gibson properties, that would probably be worth something to somebody.

Pretty sure that's still Interplay as well.

If they do actually file, I'll be sure to request their bankruptcy documentation, which always contains loads of interesting information. I had hours of fun going through Commodore's patent holdings.

Let's all hope that the Torment, Fallout and all the other licences get sold on the cheap to people who can make decent games out of them.   :-\

That would be interesting indeed. Do you have to be a shareholder to get hold of theses docs? I bet they are going to sit on any decent license until its usefullness for others has expired. Hey this could reinvigorate the old 'let's buy the engine together' debate. :)

Once they go bankrupt their holdings become a matter of public record, it should be as simple as calling the bankruptcy trustee and requesting it.

And no, in such a circumstance the goal is to obtain maximum value for the available properties, the trustee wouldn't sit on anything.

Please let's not. And besides, yes, the engine is a Bioware property, Interplay simply held a license to use it for Torment and IWD.

I have spent much of my time at Interplay's site.  I started there with Baldur's Gate.  My id over there is/was mmmyers.  I will miss many of the people over there and hope they show up somewhere soon. Much of the info in the FAQs will be missed too.  I'm speaking for some of the other games besides SOA and TOB.  They helped me through Planescape, Icewind Dale, and Icewind Dale 2.
If it is screwed up, it is probably my fault!

Just out of curiosity, what kind of bankruptcy are they filing, or where can I get the info about what's going on? It might come in handy for some classes and I am tired about turning in papers about why Montgomery Ward went bankrupt. Something a little newer might prove to be interesting.

They still haven't filed for bankruptcy, although having missed one payroll and with another on the way, it can't be far off:

May the people who screwed up Interplays good name burn in hell. I remember the good old days when Fallout and Baldur's Gate first came out. "For Gamers by Gamers" was the cool slogan. Now it's a joke.
