Obligatory IRC channel (note new network)

(1/7) > >>

jcompton:
Now that we're trying to get back to the business of modding, of course we need an IRC channel to waste time on.

irc.slashnet.org, channel #ppgmod

Update: We've added a trivial channel key, ppg, to the channel, due to an outbreak of bot spam on Slashnet. Hopefully the network operators will be able to get more sophisticated about shutting down the attacks, and/or the attackers will get bored. Apologies for the inconvenience.

neriana:
All right, time for me to admit yet again that I'm a clueless idiot when it comes to the Internet.

What's IRC?

jcompton:
IRC's a group chat system, been around for a looooong time. There are dozens of IRC networks, where you can find channels about... just about anything.

You can get standalone IRC clients such as mIRC, clients that handle multiple chat/IM systems such as Trillian, or the Mozilla browser even comes with a better-than-nothing IRC client called Chatzilla.

Basically, once you have your IRC client, you point it at irc.gamesurge.net as the server name, and once it connects you join channel #ppgmod.

icelus:
FYI, Gamesurge has been having some connection issues lately due to DDoS attacks (or something like that).  If you are having problems connecting, try connecting to this address instead:

69.12.31.52

jcompton:
Note! We've moved the IRC channel to a different network. Gamesurge was having a lot of unexplained problems with repeated splits and serious, multi-minute lag on a nightly basis.

The new network is irc.slashnet.org , channel #ppgmod . (and no, it's nothing to do with "slash" fanfiction, it was originally set up for Slashdot users.)
