Ogg Vorbis - still the rage?
« on: January 24, 2013, 06:51:16 AM »
I am a little behind, so I'd like to ask more knowledgeable folks here. So, if I wanted to add new sounds to my ~2005 NPC mod - do I still use that old ogg vorbis thingy, or is there a new version, or maybe a better thingy is available? Releasing as .wav/.wavc is still too size-heavy, I'd think.

OGG should be deprecated in mods by now. WAVC does not take up much more space than OGG, is not as lossy and since you will be compressing your mod anyway (as either a .zip, .rar or .exe) it will make very little difference space-wise. Most importantly, you can just COPY them without resorting to conversion scripts regardless of operating system. Even Compton agreed about this some time ago, but at the time he was writing mods, OGG made more sense perhaps.

Wavc cuts wavs in half, so the mod would take fifty megs instead of twelve - I'm not sure how wise it is. I will do tests, though. You use DLTCEP to convert files to wavc, or something else?

I don't know if wavc cuts wavs in half but if it did it'd be 25 meg instead of 50, no? Anyway, I use Sam.'s PS Gui to convert them in batch - pretty easy and also handles a lot of other formats.

Thanks, will check it out.

EDIT: although with IWD NPC(13 mb) downloading for over an hour and still needing twenty-five minutes, I'm not so sure we need it, yet.
