Baldur's Gate suddenly won't play
« on: July 20, 2010, 11:14:22 PM »
Hi everyone, my first post here.

It is important for my query that you know I am in Australia.

I had a very old copy of Baldur's Gate where you had to do a lot of disk swapping.

About a year ago a package came out here that included Baldur's Gate on one disk,Tales of the Sword Coast, Baldur's Gate two Shadows of Amn, Throne of Baal, Icewind Dale, Icewind Dale Heart of Winter, Icewind Dale two, Never Winter Nights, Shadows of Unrentide and Hordes of the Underdark.

I have been playing it for a whole year without any problems. However, yesterday when I put the disk in for Baldur's Gate so I could play it a message came up:

"Wrong version, this version can only be played in USA and Canada"

Can anyone tell me why this has happened now after I have been playing it okay for a long time?
Can anyone also tell me how to fix it so that I can play it again.

It is one of my favourite games and it's a great package. So I don't want to leave it on the shelf collecting dust.

Since posting this I have discovered that Baldur's gate will play. It's the expansion 'Tales of the Sword Coast' that gets this message.

Eh... so you can play BG but not TotSC? That seems odd, but that compilation was rather hastily put together methinks (I have it for the IWDs but use my original disks for the BGs because they have fewer glitches that I've seen).

Did you recently patch your game, I once patched my game and I got this error message

http://www.bioware.com/games/tales_sword_coast/support/patches/

go to here and I think you need to download the international patch, that or the UK patch (as UK and Australia are of the same region I do believe)

Patch your game and it should fix the error. You may need to reinstall also.

Do you have any mods on your BG game as well?

Ipsy.

:o No. They most definitely are NOT. The UK is northwest of mainland Europe. Australia is waaaay down south, below the equator and north of Antarctica.

I suggest that you download the international patch for ToTSC at the link that irenicus kindly posted. If you already have, I suppose you could try reinstalling the game...

I believe she's not talking about geographical regions, but patch/game regions. Australia could have the UK patch, who knows.
"Show me how you do that trick! The one that makes me scream", she said,
"the one that makes me laugh!" she said and threw her arms around my neck.
"Show me how you do it and I promise you, I promise that
I'll run away with you, I'll run away with you..."

USA = Region 1
UK/aussie = region 2

:x was a tricky one to decide xD

edit:

just looked it up in more detail (...aka harrased my aussie friend) who said they actually use region 4..

so maybe it is internationall
