Odd Viconia lines, as reported by Grim Squeaker
« on: April 11, 2004, 12:50:12 PM »
This is something of interest as reported by Grim Squeaker on the G3 forums: http://forums.camagna.net/index.php?showtopic=625

Quote from: Grim Squeaker
Here's something that me and Zandilar found while writing a Viconia Relationship Talk.  This is from one of the male lovetalks:

Quote
Viccy: I wish to...apologize...for attempting to unburden myself upon you before.  I was foolish to be so weak in Beregost, and worse yet to speak to you about it.

PC: Well, I was barely listening, anyway, so don't worry about it.

Viccy: I shall do that, jaluk.  And when I bash its skull in, you do not mind if I picture you in its bovine features, hm?

WHAT THE HELL!?!  Can anyone explain her response to me?  It would make sense if the PC had said:

Quote
PC: Well, I was barely listening, why don't you go and mutilate some cattle...

Any ideas?

Apparently, the episode in Beregost is the one with the farmers?

That it is.  But Viccy's reply still makes no sense as a response to what Charname says...

Bioware isn't above cutting corners.  There are other dialogue options you can choose in that LoveTalk which go something like, "Eh, concentrate on killing the next orc we meet," and have the same effect of ending the romance.

ahem.  It (her response) makes absolute sense if you knew what your PC was claiming to have ignored.  She then proceeds to compare him to a farm animal.

Obviously she is very pissed off that you ignored her important story.  So I get why she would imagine this cow to have Charname's face when she beats seven shades of shit out of it... the question it: where the hell did the cow come into the conversation?

I just explained where.. you just don't like my explanation  ;)

..I would go on to ask, why does she say (in ToB): "What a mooing useless COW I have become."  Maybe Gaider (or, whoever wrote her) had a fascination with cows.  Common american sayings: homely cow, fat cow, etc.. get the idea?

The question is, what's the it?  "When I bash its skull in"--huh?  What Viconia says is a non-sequitur; it doesn't follow from what CHARNAME last said to her.  What's she bashing in the skull of, worry?

have at it then.  I'm going with the cheating angle; honestly, the comment never felt that out of place to bother with.  Read anything long enough and it begins to look strange.  :)  (think 12-hour Scrabble marathon)

[edit] I think it's her way of distancing herself from the PC, grammatically incorrect as it seems.

here's the real UB, from a previous post in the old forum:

(NI state's)

(state 55): Why are you so withdrawn, <CHARNAME>? You've not said more than three words the last half day.

(state 59): Is there something there inside you that belies more than the cursory social obligations? Something more intimate?

I think it's her way of distancing herself from the PC, grammatically incorrect as it seems.
It's not about it being grammatically incorrect, it's about her saying "bash its skull in...picture you in its bovine features" with no "it" in the preceding sentences to refer to.  What is she talking about?  What's skull is being bashed in?

uh-huh.. and the fact that there is no "it" is what makes it gramatically incorrect; take IT the way you will, make of it what you will.  geez

Not about grammar.  Look at the exchange above, and tell me--what is getting its skull bashed in there?

or, I always took the "it" to be a respresentation, instead of an actual thing.  What representation?  The kind of person, or expletive/adjective/undescribable thing with the confines of the language of choice, you would have to be to barely listen to a traumatic experience as it was being relayed to you.  The kind of thing you would just have to read into something, as one often does with poetry.. I don't know.   Take your pick, already!  ;D

Ultimately, I say again, I never gave it that much attention.  Rewrite the thing if you're that dissatisfied with it.  8)

and not that I'm obsessed with it, but because it's late enough in the day (yeah, that's it  ::)):

It's not very Viconia like to say: Since you have slighted me, you pig, I shall bash your skull in.. instead, she's gives us a verbal of her ensuing imagery and attempts to equally slight charname.  Accept it or rewrite it.  :-X

Charname: "Eh, concentrate on killing the next orc we meet"

Viconia: "I shall do that, jaluk.  And when I bash its skull in, you do not mind if I picture you in its bovine features, hm?"

Mystery solved?

orcs don't have bovine features, since bovine means cow-like.

Orc.

Cow.

I agree, but Viconia might not have seen many cows, or the cows in Faerun might look different, or it might be an error in translation from Common to English, or the writer might have had a bad day. In any case, I think a simple mis-matching of lines is a very likely explanation.

Wow that cow has a scary look.

Orcs look more like hogs, if you ask me, but then again you might be right, since Vic also didn't.

Since Viconia supposedly lived in a farming district for a while, you think she would know what a cow looks like....  Whenever we saw a farm in the Sword Coast area in BGI, there were typically a number of cows around it.

However, the line does make a smidgen more sense with the preceeding Charname line.
