Bhaal spawn childhood
« on: September 15, 2008, 02:24:12 PM »
So here is my personal idea for a mod: how about a mod that chronicles the childhood of Charname? You could have a series of quests, which represent events from Charname’s childhood, like doing chores/tasks for Gorion, pranks with imoen, ect. For example, Gorion could ask you to deal with a giant rat infestation in the basement, or deliver a package.

I had also thought the childhood of charname ought to be explored, but my ideas are somewhat different. I had imagined the character choosing one or two background traits, as in NWN2, and these being the subject of discussion and reflection, especially with imoen. But what you are talking about is a sort of prequel to BG1, a major conversion, no?

Not really total conversion size, more like a several side quest totaling around 1-2 hours of game play.

Any coding experience? If you're also new to bg modding, and no one else wants to take this up, i'd be happy to try and work on a small mod exploring charname's childhood with you, since I'm also interested in that (and providing this doesn't spin off into a mega mod). we'd have to get a clearer vision on what you want to make, though.

Check the Bodies already has a 'childhood' quest/event, which is universally accepted as sucking (so much so that the notoriously traditionalist maintainer had made a 'childhood-be-gone' patch for it). If you can do the same thing without being labeled as 'boring', all power to you.

FTL = For the Lose (versus FTW = For the Win).

Honestly I can't see carrying out chores and clearing out basements as working. Like I said background traits, or interactive flashbacks, but only for key, character defining moments, at best.

This probably isn't the best place to ask, but what is the general consensus on mega mods vs. smaller, very specific mods. What is better? For major projects, would people prefer a series of somewhat related, yet distinct mods, or a 'mega mod' unofficial expansion pack.

a series of somewhat related, yet distinct mods
+1. WeiDU can do this, and it helps players who would wish to exclude a non desired component from the rest of the stuff.

That being said, monolithic mods are slightly easier to make (although not to the extent some people would make you believe). Various BWL mods are monolithic packages incompatible with 99% of everything else and are pretty well-received by their audience nevertheless.

ADDENDA: another advantage of releasing your mod piece-by-piece is that when (not if) you get bored and stop developing, at least some parts of your grand project will still be available to players. The disadvantage is that "the mass" plays the first publicly downloadable release and judges your work on that, so it is critical if you wish to be successful that YourMod V1 has some well-done features rather than a hundred of half done ones.
Forget about other modders picking up your abandoned project and finish it - all modders have projects of their own, not to mention the hypocrital community consensus that other people' mods aren't modifiable without explicit permission.

So, were someone to pick up a long abandoned project, such as Arnel's Nalia romance or some of the inactive g3 mods, and attempt to complete it, that would be considered in poor taste (assuming they couldn't get hold of the author)?

EDIT: BWL?

If you don't get authorization, then yeah (nevermind that nobody asked bioware for authorization when writing UB).

I suppose that's the reason no one finishes all those great mods that end in SoA. Oh well, like you say everyone has their own projects, anyway. Back to the topic at hand, I wonder when someone will actually take up one of these mod ideas and make the next ppg release. This childhood idea is as good as any other that has been proposed so far, but I'm anxious to see something made. I think we all are.

"other projects" is likely more relevant than "respect for the other modder", although both contribute heavily (especially since most modders would get angry if someone dared ask permission to edit their work, not even do so).

Back to the topic at hand, I wonder when someone will actually take up one of these mod ideas and make the next ppg release.
Rule #1: if you want to see something made, prepare to make it yourself.
Rule #2: if you make something, prepare to make it by yourself.
Rule #3: if you want to see something made but not make it yourself, prepare to be disappointed.

I doubt Jason was suggesting that him (or another PPG modder) make your idea - more like, he's offering to host the mod you make.

Yes, yes. Perhaps I wasn't clear. Everyone's coming up with ideas, but nothing seems to be going further than that. Naturally I'm not suggesting the ppg modders are asking for random projects to take up, of course not.  I mean an idea pops up, fades away, and you never hear anything about it again. No one has really committed to turning any of their ideas into a project, I guess that's what I'm looking for.

Perhaps this is less so at PPG, but other mod comunities are awash with hundreds of mods in different stages of limbo (from "just plain idea" to "my hard drive failed the day before V1 and I don't have a backup"). It's not like that this forum is unlucky  :)

how about offering to make the mod rather than testing it?

By the way, with all these new nifty Weidu functions, you've never been tempted to create something big and shiny for it? Like, twenty new areas, seventy quests, fifteen duels, six arena fights and absolutely no one-night-stands?

I know about Bigg_Tweaks and stuff. But, seriously. No plans?

No need to actually write something myself. I simply launch `patch -p1' on the work of others and get all the glory  :)

i have an irrational, passionate dislike of mega mods like that

i see them all as incompatible with everything else, story line hijacking, without focus, and buggy..

when you're done i, for one, am curious to see it.. if you want to get into coding mods check out the tutorials page and look for 'weidu basics by jahpeth'.. after that you can learn any number of things that interest you.
