Greetings & question (spoilers)
« on: August 27, 2008, 09:19:07 PM »
Hello all, I humbly come before you on this forum because I've recently downloaded the Solaufein mod (yes I know the game is 8 years old)... anyway, I'm enjoying the character, both his dialogue and his abilities, but I'm having a little trouble with the fights the mod introduces.

Let's see... I'm currently doing the Umar Hills quest (at the end of it, in fact). I drop the shadow dragon no problem, then it's out to the altar. Sola steals the spotlight and after a banter with the Shade Lord in which the rest of my party feel like extras on a movie set, combat starts. Now the Shade Lord casts some... interesting protections on himself and zaps me with things like Finger of Death and level drain, I figure OK, if that's how you want to play it. Then a so-called Revenge Spider pops up, webs the area, and makes a beeline for Imoen whom it kills in one hit. While she was blurred and stoneskinned.

I manage to get through the rest of the fight somehow, but now two of my characters are dead and I haven't got any resurrection spells memorized, and also forgot the res rod. So I rest, but as soon as we wake up Sola tells me there's more revenge spiders on the way, and sure enough *pop* there they are before I've even managed to raise poor Immy. Cue more webbing and str-drain attacks. Reload time. In the end, the solution for beating them was as cheesy as the encounter itself, as I suspected: Since they all make a beeline for Imoen and ignore all other party members, have her run around with imp. haste while everyone else plays target practice with the spiders. Mission accomplished.

I mean no offense to the creator, as I do enjoy Sola's character and a lot of work has obviously been put into him, but I don't find particular pleasure or satisfaction in facing overpowered, cheating enemies over and over until I can figure out some obscure way that allows me to beat them. And from what I've heard, it gets worse - is this true? And is there any way to keep Solaufein while getting rid of the cheesy fights, like with Ascension's optional components? Thanks in advance.

From my experience, you can get rid of the fights, if you tell him "Hey, it's just a dream!" in all conversations he mentions them.

Surprisingly, the mod's README also has this information.

Thanks, I actually can't find the readme file anymore (my BG2 directory is a mess, I swear I've got so many mods going I don't even really know what I'm playing anymore)... but I remember telling him it was just a dream about the spiders, he said something like 'please believe me, they're coming' and they appeared anyway. I'll try it for the future though, thanks.

Sola is designed for people who don't mind a couple of hard fights. You can skip his ToB challenge by telling him that it's a dream, but not the SoA ones.

They go for the character with the worst AC and their attacks drain strength  -> Imoen chains a couple of PFMW to defend herself (they can't detect and/or remove it).
They cast Web  -> cast C4 Free Action and/or use items granting Freedom of Action (the Ring, or a couple of odd items).

You can find the readme here. The battle tactics start at about 1/3 or the document.

Thanks for the readme link. I did actually use PfMW, after figuring out that they ignore stoneskin, but only one (just one slot available at that level) and 4 rounds isn't a lot of time. Also used Free Action, in fact that's what saved me in the end. It's not that the encounter is very hard per se, I just don't see how a first-time player can survive it without knowing what to expect, and I'm not a big fan of "reload until you get it just right" tactics, which this kind of fight seems to require.

If Imoen is just level 12, Mirror Images should be able to help keeping her alive as well (and, if she's just level 12 by this point, you might have done something wrong).

There are two other mandatory challenges if you keep Sola (the ToB one is thankfully skippable); one is hard if you're a newbie, and the other is very hard in general.

Do you mean the Eclipse encounter I've read about? Yeah, the readme basically says they're as strong a (good) player's party at that point, and oh yeah, they cast timestop every other round. Was it too hard to create challenging enemies who don't cheat? I'll most likely skip that one.

I'd say it's impossible to create a very challenging encounter (for appropriate definitions thereof) without giving an unique/unreplicable advantage to the enemies (especially at the end game).

I'd agree with you if we were talking about powergamers who know the game inside out and aren't above exploiting every advantage they can get. But for a (mostly) casual player like me, who just wanted to revisit an old favourite and try out a new character, it's a bit too much. Sadly, this mod seems geared much more toward the first category. I'm not saying it's not good, because it is, I just don't think it's for me. Anyway, after perusing the readme file and giving it a bit more thought, I decided to save myself the frustration and say goodbye to Sola for now. Thanks for the help and answers, everyone.
