Translating Assassinations into Russian
« on: April 02, 2008, 11:04:03 AM »
Some moments are interesting.

I was translating Lord Melyin encounter line by line, and the last line was(the line spoken by Lord Melyin) -

@831  = ~Help me! SOMEONE!~

And then, without warning, the next line:

@832  = ~May I speak to Nevier Costa?~

... for some reason, I felt very guilty.

Translating into Russian? Are you fully bilingual? Your profile says you are a fellow Muscovite, figured the mod would have been a translation FROM Russian...

Good translation isn't as easy to do as you might think it is. The meaning would be twisted one way or another, not matter how hard you try to avoid it, especially when translating RPG dialogs. Trust me.

"Traduttore traditore."
Italian for "A translator is a traitor." or "translator, traitor."  But as soon as you translate it, you loose that flowing, musical, magical quality the Italian phrase has.
'Tis the translator's curse: preserve the meaning, preserve the pun...  Not an easy task!

Russian translation is mostly just "I want to make it available to Russian users, and I hope to make it good enough". English comes first with Baldur's Gate mods, because -- well, because it just happened this way back in 2004.

Currently I'm spending hours over a debut novel in Russian; I'll see how it goes.
