NearInfinity and Dialog.tlk
« on: August 26, 2009, 10:35:52 PM »
When I am playing BG1 and try to open Near Infinity, is can't find the Dialog.tlk so none of the strings are displayed.  When I open Near Infinity first and try to run BG1, I get the following error message:
Code: [Select]
Assertion [the window title]
An Assertion failed in D:\BGSourceUpdate_TOTSC\dev\Baldur\CBaldurChitin.cpp at line number 595
 Programmer says: No tlk file

The same thing with IWD and the error message is:

Code: [Select]
Icewind Dale - Heart of Winter [the window title]
An Assertion failed in CBaldurChitin.cpp at line number 1176
 Programmer says: No tlk file

But not with BG II - ToB or IWD II.  Why is this and can NI be fixed so that it doesn’t do it with BG1 or IWD?

You're not supposed to run Near Infinity at the same time as the game, if that's what you're asking.

Then why can I run it at the same time as BGII or IWDII?  Whichever way, it logically seems like it should be consistent... either all work or all not work.  And since some of the games CAN be run while using NI for that game, shouldn't it be possible to make NI so that it can be used while any of the games are running?

P.S.  Sorry if I'm too inexperienced to grasp a fundamental concept here. :-\

Even if it appears to work with BG2/IWD2, I have a feeling that you're asking for trouble by running them at the same time.  Maybe someone else could explain the risks involved or correct me if I'm wrong, but it just sounds like a bad idea to me.

I would really appreciate that.  So, I guess it's up to you, someone else... :)

BG1 opens dialog.tlk with a stronger lock than bg2. IIRC, the solution is to run NI first, select  Game -> Release Dialog.tlk lock (or a similarly-sounding menu item), and then start bg1.

Wow, that answered my question AND provided a solution.  Thanks!
