Host Your Own Modding Conflict!
« on: September 14, 2007, 10:00:44 AM »
Remember those old "Host a Mystery Party" boxed games? Ever wished you could host your own Modding Conflict, like those you've heard about in the homes of the rich and famous? Now you can, with this easy guide!

As an exercise for the reader, we do not list every crucial step here.

1. Conflict begins. Note that this does not necessarily require an antagonist, as most conflicts begin innocently enough. "So, what's this I hear about mod X? Is it any good?" or "Why is it that A and B don't seem to get along? I don't understand."

3. Conflict spills onto the second page of the thread. By now there should be at least one clear champion of one side, and two clear champions of the other side.

5. The first pseudonymous guest poster arrives.

7. Somebody wonders aloud why Sim hasn't arrived yet.

9. The first peacemaker arrives.

10. The first truly incomprehensible post appears.

12. The first Thinly Veiled Alias guest poster arrives.

14. Sim arrives.

15. Old school: The original antagonist (or Sim) is banned. New school: Somebody warns the original antagonist that TeamBG would totally have banned their ass by now.

17. jcompton is blamed for something. (This can legally occur at any time.)

19. The peacemaker from step #9 posts again, but now is rather more crabby and less soothing.

21. The first "oops I'm really that other guy but I was posting in a hurry and forgot I wasn't logged in" guest post is made.

23. The first parody mod about the situation is released.

25. Discussion has degenerated to "your mother."

28. Somebody deletes their account in protest.

30. The thread is locked.

JC, I think you should stop posting these inflammatory threads or I will send in the lawyers.

You missed two points.

19b. Arbitrary cross-references to other posts in other forums are drawn and quoted out of context, sometimes combined with a personal "I never thought you would develop into what you are now"-phrases.

31. Someone opens a fun thread, covered as a general discussion about the whole thing on another forum.

Guest the guest poster says something stupid that's intended to be incredibly cruel and hurtful, but they're too chickenshit to drop any hint as to who they are.

Tsk, tsk, making fun of forum conflicts... bad Compton.

I think the main dilemma is that you cannot randomly pair antagonists. You need heavy-hitters on both sides and since the evil overlord himself has transcended into legend/sainthood/wherever demons go, there aren't any people left to fill the corners.

-A "it's all a lie" thread appears on the original forum.
-Several posts are made.
-The topic gets closed.
-Someone with the Relevant Power opens the thread again to add his own remarks as last post and closes the thread again.
-Repeat the last point as appropriate.

;D I don't mind calling me out as an example of an `IA hater' or pointing out that I ignore BWL modders when it comes to WeiDU*, but apparently "somebody" needs to single me out even when it's obvious that I cannot be implied (I mean, Gabrielle was sort-of on "our side", so why should I guest-post to insult her?).

Of course, It'll turn out that referencing me there was just tongue-in-cheek at my unprovable statements.

*: Psst, don't tell anywhere near cmorgan that I ignore BWL mod(er)s when developing WeiDU. Besides, back-reading threads it'd become apparent that reports of me ignoring BWL modders are at most an exaggeration of truth.

anyone who actually believes this, or thinks the bigg doesn't fairly support and listen to *everyone*, no matter how much he disagrees with the code or actions, can stick it up their shiny tight  can come over to my place and spend a weekend and several days testing the crap out of stuff to make sure that it works on all mods, regardless of community, coding practice, or platform.
