I just came across AGS(Adventure Game Studio) on Wikipedia, and I wonder if you had any experience with it that you'd like to share. It looks interesting - and AGS community, for one, bears some striking similarities to IE modding community, or so it seems to me.

I played their version of King's Quest III, but never managed to escape from the wizard's house. From what I remember, the game is good and the others sound interesting, too, but I'm just not into adventures.

I'm a bit of an adventure game junkie and AGS is a place I find very good to get a fix. 
Some of my personal favs. are Spooks, Equilibrium-Out of Time(inspired by the movie), Two of a kind, The Winter Rose and the Ben Jordan Paranormal Investigator cases.
There are many more but I can't think of them off the top of my head.  The graphics are generally fairly basic but the stories are, usually, really good.
