Problem with Balthazar inside the monastary

I think this is the right place to post, because I'm guessing (but I'm not certain this is an educated guess here! ) that my problem of sorts stems from Ascension.
Alright, so I have Ascension installed, and after killing Abazigal and Sendai, I return to Amekthran with a party composed of Sarevok, Valygar, Cernd, Imoen and Irenicus (to whom I still haven't promised a soul).
Once inside the Monastary, the whole "Ah, <CHARNAME>... your presence here shows me how foolish I have been in gathering my army of mercenaries." etc. dialog starts.  My worry here is that whatever dialog option I pick, Balthazar still says "Further conversation is pointless, <CHARNAME>.  I have a task which I must complete.  Your death is a necessity, Bhaalspawn.", and starts combat.
Is it because I have Irenicus in my party?  I'm totally nonplussed, because I took a look at the readme and my reputation is heroic (20 I think), my wisdom and charisma are high (both greater than 15).  Is it because I have Virtue (it's 19 I believe), and the whole thing interferes?  Do I need to have an extra slot available in my party?

In other words, um... help?  Any ideas, please?
