Weekend Diversions
« on: July 30, 2006, 04:16:50 PM »
Went camping in Ithaca (home of Cornell U), New York this weekend. Ithaca has lots of gorges; here is a picture at Buttermilk Falls:

I'll post more as I process them...

Ahh... smell the fresh air; listen to the birds and crickets accompany the soothing rhythm of the falls.  ;)

Yeah, I can't see the pictures, either, but that's becuase some of the anti-hacker software I have conveniently disables pics. Grumble, grumble, grumble.

If you really want to see the pictures, quote the post and copy/paste the address into your browser.

yep, and they are making me homesick for NewEngland (ok, so NYS isn't quite labelled as such, but I always thought everything north of Stony Brook should sucede from NY and join NE as its own state anyways!!)

Well, you folks could join us Vermonters (ok, former, since I had to leave to find a job) in creating your own independent Republic, and voting every 100 years to decide whether to remain part of the Union... I am suprised Texas didn't follow our example.

I think they have us beat; they tried it back on February 1, 1861  ;)   I need to get this topic back on track!  ::)

Very nice photos! :)
It makes me want to go camping, except it is still too cold where I am.

The medieaval art exhibit at the museum was quite good, but last time I went, it was closed for rennovation.  If that is one of the stops you plan to make, you might want to check to see if it's open.

One last shot of the falls. This is the largest; gently cascading down several hundred feet to the base of the ravine.

Philadelphia

Philadelphia was great!

There's a jazz club on South Broad Street, called Zanzibar Blue. Saw Michael Franks perform Friday night and was able to shake hands and talk with him after the show. Any Michael Franks fans out there?

Saturday, did some sight-seeing; directly at the heart of Philadelphia, on Center Square, City Hall rises 510 feet into the air--here's a slightly different view of that National Landmark  ;)

For those unfamiliar with the history, the figure at the top of the tower is William Penn. Trivia: To the sculptor's chagrin, it was mounted on the tower facing northeast, where Penn negotiated a treaty with the Indians instead of South where it would be constantly lit by the sun.

It was one of those "surprise" shots that are un-looked for. As I was about to cross Market St., I looked up and saw the reflection.

Those are beautifully shot.  Tell me, what do you shoot with?
If you used film, what type?
What shutter speed on the water-falls?  You just managed to capture the last semblance of definition in the water; any longer an exposure and I *think* you'd have had a white blur.  I've always wanted to do something like that but never think to use my camera when I am near waterfalls.

I have a Fuji S1 Digital SLR set at 400 speed. For the waterfalls, I placed an ND filter in front of the lens, which decreased the light by 2 stops. I always bracket my shots (three shots were taken at 1/30, 1 sec, 1.5 sec at f22). A tripod is a must for subjects like this.

I am envious of the Digital SLRs.  I'm still using film (Nikon N2000, Canon AE1 Program) so I can only afford to bracket the important shit -like if I do a job.. which I haven't in years.  Damn I need a Digital SLR...  Otherwise, very nice!
