So. . . why do I have NO Virtue?
« on: June 17, 2006, 12:51:07 PM »
A very curious weirdness in my current game (the only one I have running on my newish computer, so I don't have anything to compare it with yet), that's lasted ever since Jon's Dungeon: When I started the game, everything was fine. Every time I Load a Saved game, however, my Virtue fails to display. It looks like this:
Virtue: ()
Reputation: Heroic (16)
And then, after I do something that affects my Virtue, it shows up properly again. Until I Reload. The party members react to Virtue just fine, even when it isn't displayed, and my alignment changed from TN to NG as normal, so my game doesn't seem to be affected, but this is just too tweaky not to tell you about.

I've heard reports of this before, but I've never been able to reproduce it. I theorize that it may be caused by installing other mods after Virtue--perhaps you could post your weidu.log?

More weirdness, along the lines of the same bug.

On a lark, I tried killing the Svifneblin for Phaere. I've never tried this in an unbugged game, but here's how it worked in mine: -1 to Virtue for attacking each of the 5 (or so) Svirfneblin, plus a hit for killing each of them, and they're all classed as Innocents. In other words, this automatically sets your Virtue to 1, since you can't really leave it to Solaufein to kill them (They never attack him, but he has only 1 attack per round, lousy THAC0, and does 1D3 damage). But that's not the bug.

Imoen got mad and left the party when my Virtue got to . . . Equable (12). But that's not the bug.

This is the bug: I then Reloaded the Auto-Save before leaving the city, and my Virtue was Villianous (1), even though I hadn't done anything unvirtuous the entire game! I then did some testing: Doing something to your Virtue (let's say it's killing all the Svirfneblin) and then Reloading to before you killed the Svirfneblin results in the Reloaded game retaining the Virtue display of the old game. The actual Virtue appears to stay the same: Desmond was back to being Neutral Good, just as he should have been, though I didn't stay in the game long enough to hear Korgan or Minsc express their feelings about the party's path. It's just the display that's bugged, an in an intermittent fashion: Sometimes the Reloaded game displays a Virtue of Villainous (1), [even though it's actually 16], and sometimes it shows up as Righteous (1). That is not a typo. But if you exit all the way out of the game and back to desktop, and then open up BG1 again and load the very same Savegame, the display reads "Virtue: ()" again.

So, apparently, the file's Virtue global is somehow not being erased along with everything else in the "Clearing Game Data" process. As bugs go, that's pretty damn weird.

Okay, yes, this sounds very much like an install order issue. The Virtue readme does note that it should be installed last out of everything, and this is largely non-negotiable unfortunately (I update to an HTML readme in future versions which means I can make this slightly clearer). Anything which appends baldurs.bcs afterwards is liable to cut off the blocks which update the record screen (which must be called every time the game is loaded, else, yes, you'll get things like blank Virtue).
It shouldn't do any harm to reorder the installation so Virtue is last, but the amount of stuff you've got, it'd probably take an age. If the problem is only superficial and you're content to ignore it, then fine, but if the problems run deeper then I do build in a variable to cut off Virtue interaction which you can set via the console in the event of a disaster.

Arggh! Divine Remix demands that it be installed last too! Modlist.pocketplane.net really should also offer a hierarchy of the order in which to install mods.

If the problem is only superficial and you're content to ignore it, then fine, but if the problems run deeper then I do build in a variable to cut off Virtue interaction which you can set via the console in the event of a disaster.
I'll just live with it for now--the only thing that worries me is Imoen's thinking that my Virtue is 6 points lower than it actually is (I have a screenshot of her and Korgan bitching about my Virtue at the exact same time). I think this occurred because when I first recruited her, my Virtue was 17, and Imoen somehow accepted this as the median value of 10 or so. Since I plan my PC to eventually become Neutral Evil, and keep Imoen regardless, this could become a problem--I'll experiment with booting/re-recruiting Imoen at an equable Virtue, and see what happens then. But yes, if I do need some CLUA help, I'll ask for it here.

Update: Uninstalling and reinstalling Virtue corrected the problem with the display, but not how the NPCs (all of them now, not just Imoen) seem to think my Virtue is lower than it actually is.

What precisely is the difference between D0Virtue and D0VMirror?

I've looked through the NPC scripts in NI and I did some testing with the console, and it seems that the cause of the phenomenon of NPCs thinking Virtue is lower than it is is that virtue loss is mirrored by a loss in "D0Happiness" for each (good) NPC. So if you lose 2 D0Virtue, (good) NPCs lose 2 D0Happiness. D0Happiness is not incremented by manually setting Virtue higher, so if you've lost 2 Virtue and then set it back with the console the NPCs just won't "know" about it. A solution (or perhaps rather, a quick and dirty fix) is to SetGlobal("D0Happiness",LOCALS,x) - where x is a number from 1-20 (10 seems to be the "standard" initial value) - while the cursor rests over the NPC's portrait.
