This thread kind of begs the question "why would someone who hates or is simply not interested in football open and read a thread entitled 'Happy World Cup'"...

Bex, why are there fewer bonfires in Edmonton now, that Oilers are just a step away from winning the Stanley Cup?

Because the 'Canes took the first two games in the series?  :D

They did? Oh crap, I thought the Oilers led. Though frankly, I ain't much of a sports fan

Nightmare, why did you say "why would someone who hates or is simply not interested in football open and read a thread entitled 'Happy World Cup'"? Clock Sendak's obviously a soccer fan

And why do many call 'soccer' 'football'? The dictionary says that the proper British word for 'soccer' is 'soccer', too (abbreviation of 'association football')

I think he was referring to people like myself, not Clock Sendak. :)

Because we, the British, invented the language.  No one in the UK calls football 'soccer'.  I really don't get why the Americans call their 'football' that, since you can pick up the ball.

The police made all the businesses in our top rioting zone either get rid of or lock up pretty much everything that the hooligans can steal and burn.

(And our chances for the cup are looking pretty dismal since our main goalie is injured and unable to play and the team is disheartened. We'll see how tonight's game goes.)

OK. Thanks for the explanation, Nightmare

Alarielle, first of all, English wasn't 'invented'. And even if it was, definitely not by Scots, but by Englishmen. Native Scottish was Gaelic, I assure you, the one they speak in the Highlands
Thirdly, if you Brits invented English, why do you call atom 'atom', which means in Greek 'indivisible'? Every kid knows that the atom is divisible

Ahahaha.  No one in the highlands of Scotland speaks Gaelic, unless of course they moved there from Lewis.  Gaelic is only widely spoken in the Hebrides and in the South-West.  Every region has its own dialect, but those do not even vaguely resemble gaelic in most places.  Please don't assure me anything about my home country, thanks.  :)

Ok, perhaps 'invented' was the wrong word - how about developed?  Anyway, I'm not going to get into the origins of the English language with you - I'm just saying that it's football here and that's all there is to it.  There doesn't have to be a reason behind us calling it that.  It just is.

Oh, and the atom?  It wasn't known until relatively recently that the atom could be split.  When the atom was discovered, it was thought to be the smallest possible thing.  Not that that has much to do with English/football/soccer.

yes jester, my hopes will fall on the hapless shoulders of my australian heritage...

anybody seen the film "the proposition"?  It's a nice bit of brutality.

unless i adopt some other reckless home for my blood-soaked, cattle-minded, primal urges to express themselves in the dulling opiate of faux nationalism.  In which case I'll draw a line through my face and toast my other drunken and deluded self-across-the-brain, because none of you bastards will raise a glass with me.

but seriously, see the film.

I don't know. I'm inclined to believe someone who's from Scotland over articles revealed in a search.

(And Lu, since you're probably looking for information to back up your argument, you're automatically skewing your own results.)

Alarielle's right. Very, very few people in Scotland speak Gaelic, and fewer still as their language of choice.

I have it on good authority (well, 2 Englishmen, an ex-pat lady from Bristol, and a [very racist] Welshman) that Scot's don't speak Gaelic.  They don't speak English. They don't even speak. They only drink!
