Alteration in the models/animations. Possible?
« on: March 08, 2006, 03:11:59 PM »
Hello, I'm pretty new here and by pretty new I mean I just signed up. So Hello everybody.
Enough formalities!
I'm currently creating a npc mod and I'm wondering;

Is it possible to add new animations to a character?

Why?
I want a fucking boomstick that's why, cuz the mod I wanna make hails to the king... alot. :pirate

I'm mostly doing this for my own amusement, but if anyone has any pointers or tips before I start it would help alot.

Not easily.  You'd have to generate the animations using a 3D program and export it into a series of BAMs.  Either that or you have to draw every single frame of the animation and convert them to BAMs.

Basically, it's not easy.  This is why basically no-one as done it.

I'm pretty sure I can get the animations done as I know a shitload of animators. If it was just making the animation and importing it I wouldn't consider it a real problem.. The problem I would think is altering the model and making it work with the game, but the hell do I know.
Is it possible to export the 3d model and alter it in a 3d program? If it is.. then perhaps I'll give it a try.. but if I have to write the plugin.. I'd be fighting a loosing battle. I don't have that kind of time.

I WAS thinking about just fucking around with the crossbow animation. But I want a straight answer from you cuz I haven't looked at my possibilites yet and it seems you have been around.

Is it possible or is it just waste of time?

It's an absolutely ungodly ammount of animations you'd need to do.  While possible, it will be a real pain in the ass.
Poor baby. Couldn't find a fight anywhere else so you had to come here, huh. -Cybersquirt

All the game files have are flat 2D sprite images. There's not a 3D model to be found. Similarly, you cannot just stick a new 3D model into the game, you must prerender all of the frames, merge them into a BAM, and find the right place to slot them into the game. It's not impossible, but it is very, very fiddly.

Does this mean that the new BAM would take the place of a old one or could it operate as an entirely new thing?

Would it help if I used a modified crossbow animation and bound the item only to work with a certain person?

It's outside the bounds of my experience at this point, I don't know. (I just know this sort of thing is vastly easier in Weingine, but that doesn't help you yet.)

It just accured to me that this thread perhaps should have been at "Infinity Engine Modding Q&A" and not here.
Should I move it Jc?

Is there anyone with that kind of experience which you can refer to or should I just start trying/failing?

Converting existing bams back to 3d is impossible.
Creating a new bam is possible, but the official games have limited animation slots.
You will most likely end up replacing existing graphics.
And finally converting 3d to bam is very hard.
I've not seen it done perfectly, though i saw some promising attempts.
