"hacking" a Kensai/Mage multi-class?
« on: February 28, 2006, 02:00:58 PM »
Hi,

I managed to install EasyTutu correctly (hurrah!) Its really a great piece of work.

I have a secret wish to break the multiclass rules and create a Kensai/Mage multiclass ( i never played a fighter/mage style character, and i dont want to use dual class which is boring and overpowered, but i would still like to try the kensai).

Ive tried starting as a Fighter/Mage, and as a Kensai and then changing the savegame using Shadowkeeper. Ive also tried pregenerating the character, exporting it, and changing it to fighter/mage in shadowkeeper.

No matter how i go about it, whenever i level up the kensai part i get some wizard spell slots. So if i start as 1 K/1 M and add 4000 XP which gives 2K/1M i go from 1 level 1 spell to 2 level 1 spells. To  check whether or not this problem keeps occuring at higher levels, i tried adding experience leading to level 6/6. I this case i should have 4/2/2 spells, but i have 5/3/3.

Do you guys have any idea if its possible to achieve a fully functional Kensa/mage multiclass?

PS: I know this is not strictly a Tutu question, but im trying to get it to work in Tutu, and i have a feeling people around here have a *really* good understanding of the inner workings of BG1/2.

Try extending the XP out to 8 million (ToB cap).  As long as the mage spells are close, why worry about it?  No sense in being adamant about playing exactly by the rules when you are already breaking them in the creation of this multi-class. :)

You might also try doing some forum searches in the BG2 forums at Sorcerer's Place.  It seems like I always used to read about people trying things like this back in the day.  If you find something that worked for someone in BG2, it ought to work in Tutu as well.

It is probably also possible to just edit the save on every level-up -- I'm pretty sure SK lets you adjust # of spells.

Guess not :) I guess i could just not memorize any spells using those slots. I guess its easy to remember if its 1 per level.

I will check those forums, nice to know its not likely to be related to tutu. As for editing the savegames, thats definetly a possibility, but its a hassle i would like to avoid.

Thanks for the feedback.

I can only add XP upto 161k, which i seem to remember as the ToSC cap, which is just fine. This makes me 7/7 and i still have exactly one extra spell per level.

Do you know where i can find saving throw progression tables? There doesnt seem to be any tables in the manual and i want to be sure they are correct.

gamefaqs apparently doesnt allow external linking, so i get an error message telling me this. What did you search for on gamefaqs to find that file? Alternatively, could you email it to me ( ziphnor@gmail.com ). Thanks a lot for the help.

Under PC games, search under 'B' for Baldur's Gate 2.  One of the FAQs is a file by Dan Simpson called AD&D rules, or something like that.

Thanks alot.

Btw, some guy at the bioware forums actually knew what the problem with the extra spells was caused by. You can read it here:

I read that post over at Bioware but I dont feel like registering to reply so I will reply here:

1.  What did you use for THAC0 and HP for 1st level and did what you used include CON bonus?

2.  The only way I can see to take care of the spell problem is to use SK to remove the extra spells at level up, is that what you did?

3.  I am askin this because I am thinkin of putting a power party together for some fun:  multiclass Kensai/Mage (elf), Druidic Sorcerer (human), Barbarian/Wildmage (half-orc) and a Berserker/Priest of Helm (dwarf).

will be an ueber party but will be fun to play for a change of pace.

If you are using Shadow Keeper, first off i would suggest pre-generating the characters and altering the character files. That way only the HP will be off when you start the game(in Multiplayer mode they will actually be correct it seems). If you alter HP in Shadowkeeper you should set it to the value EXCLUDING the CON bonus. The game will add the CON bonus automatically. The base HP in shadow keeper refers to exactly that, the *base* HP.

Btw, i think you will have problems with the Drudic sorceror, since Sorceror can not normally participate in any dual or multiclass scenario.

Dont be sorry, I should have been more specific.  Barbarian/Wildmage multiclass works too but its just a pain in the ass to make and you end up with a fighter/wildmage with barbarian inates.
