Hold on. I voted in this on the assumption that it was purely spurious nonsense. And now you're telling me there's a POINT to it?

When did "none of the above" go out of style? At least then, you have a neutral option that will give an indication of just how irrelevant your other choices were without luring voters into silliness like "barnacles" or "hermaphrodite."
The suggestion "hermaphrodite" was actually purported to be a viable and necessary poll option.  That you are equating "barnacles" to "hermaphrodite" only supports the point I was trying to make. :)

That's a misiinterpretation of what I meant, perhaps better clarified by explaining how I vote in a poll. I try to answer honestly, unless none of the available options are relevant to me, then I choose "none of the above." If "none of the above" is not available, I get annoyed, so I pick the answer that least applies to me, such as "barnacles" or "hermaphrodite," since the poll is poorly constructed, it's not going to get accurate results anyway, and I stop caring about giving an honest response. It's not that the response is nonsense by either being a random word offensive to Sim or covering a very small minority; it's that the poll is nonsense by not not giving a true opt out option. That was my opinion.

Of course, all polls on a public forum are bad, and we should all expect them to be stupid in theme and execution. Because. Forum. Poll.

The only point I was trying to make is that if a poll has any spurious nonsense involved that people go with the nonsense.  The definition of nonsense is, obviously, subjective which means if something could, even in the slightest way, be construed as nonsense that this is how people will vote.  While we're on the subject, I'm also fairly certain that any anonymous poll, whether online or not, will be similarly bad......even if there isn't any nonsense.  People like to screw around, but when you invite it............

EDIT: To put it bluntly, if I was presented with a gender specific poll that had Eunuch/Hermaphrodite/Transgender/etc as a gender option I'd probably select it because I thought it was funny.  I'd wager (real money) that there are a lot of other non-transgender types that would do that, too (seriously, if anybody wants to make a bet.........).

I think it's the attitude. There's so much of it flying around.

I'm not mad at anyone and I'm not trying to say very much either.  If I appeared snarky it was intended as a friendly kind of snarky.  I was actually aiming for precocious.  If anyone took it any other way and was offended, it was certainly not my intent and I apologize. I certainly bear no grudges towards anybody.

So, I believe I read in TIME, maybe, that the chances of a person understanding the intended emotional tone of a message through e-mail hovers around 50% (actually, slightly lower, but for the sake of what I'm saying . . . ) which is no better than chance. People who read e-mails, however, believe emphatically that they are right regarding tone about 90% of the time.

Just a little food for thought.
